Week 4 - Low Carb Bootcamp - Keep on keeping on

Helloooo! StuntNun here filling in for the lovely and dedicated BIWI who is off on her hols. So how are you all getting on? I'm sure lots of us are seeing the scales go in the right direction fingers tightly crossed for a pound off myself this week but please don't worry if the scales aren't budging, it's pretty common for there to be a weight loss 'pause' as your body adapts to a low carb diet. Please post your progress and say whether you're continuing on Bootcamp or Bootcamp Light. And if anyone has any questions please ask as it's great to get into the science behind low carbing so we have some ammunition against accusations of being on a fad diet.

As always, the rules are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness and you can track your weight on the cunningly named Weight Tracker.

By way of inspiration I've put together some info on how we got into this mess in the first place...

Why do we gain weight?

Before I started low carbing I wondered about squirrels. Yep, squirrels. I've never seen a fat squirrel, have you? But squirrels, as I'm sure you know, hoard up huge quantities of nuts and seeds and store them in little caches all over the place. So why don't they eat them all? I assume squirrels like nuts and seeds and yet they manage to resist the urge to stuff their admittedly cute little faces until their food is all gone. Humans on the other hand... humans are rubbish. We eat too much, we know we eat too much, we feel bad because we eat too much, and yet we keep doing it. So why are we so rubbish compared to squirrels? The paleo/primal nutters like me community will tell you that it's because we're eating a diet that is too different from the diet we evolved to eat and that the biggest problem of all is too much carbohydrate.

When you eat a carbohydrate-rich meal, your body releases the hormone insulin to signal the muscles and liver to store carbohydrate. On a conventional diet, however, our muscles and liver are constantly kept at full capacity. Since these glycogen stores are permanently full, any glucose that can't immediately be used by the body is stored as fat. Another action of insulin is to shut down the release of fat from our fat cells so our own fat stores become inaccessible. Then when we get hungry again we eat yet more carbohydrate and the process starts again, more and more glucose is stored as fat and the weight piles on. Worse still, the constant bombardment of our muscles and liver with insulin when their glycogen stores are already full causes them to become less sensitive to the effect of insulin, or insulin resistant. The pancreas responds by releasing more and more insulin and our blood sugar levels start to drop too low as the body frantically clears glucose into its fat stores. Eventually we find we are hungry all the time, starving only two hours after we last ate. And because our blood sugar levels are low, what do we crave? Yet more carbs. So we end up trapped in a viscous cycle of carb addiction, hunger and weight gain while our ever more ample fat stores are unusable.

Hopefully this has described the process by which the weight creeps on. In next week's thread I'll put together some info on how a low carb diet reverses this process, allowing us to use up our fat stores and achieve the weight we want to be at the same time as improving our health and our energy levels and reducing our risk of diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Good luck all for the coming week. Onwards and downwards!

minny ..... Am also pie chart addict Grin nailed it today !

KinkyDorito · 29/05/2014 20:19

Parsnip I went on settings, but couldn't see how to change it?

Parsnipcake · 29/05/2014 20:33

kinky I think it's in goals on the website rather than app.

lowcarbforthewin · 29/05/2014 20:55

Parsnip I think I was the same, not eating nearly enough fat. Especially cutting out dairy, I think you have to really make an effort to eat enough.
I got through another day with no tea time snack and much better hunger levels. Very pleased!

StuntNun · 29/05/2014 21:10

Suzymoo I have been pouring butter over things, eating the fat from my kids' pork chops, eating pork belly more often than seems sensible, eating goose and duck and every scrap of skin from the chicken and the weight has fallen off me (2 lb a week at first then 1 lb a week on average) and my total cholesterol is an enviable 3.92 mmol/l. I feel better than I ever have in my life: my skin is clearer, my IBS has stopped, all those niggly aches and pains have gone, I sleep better, I don't get so tired in the day, I can skip a meal or exercise before breakfast. There's no way I'm ever going back to that old way of eating.

Oh glad to see I'm not aloneGrin
Can't stand fatty meat, hate skin, crackling etc
But love butter, so cheese and slices of butter for snacks, butter on all veg.
Not thought about adding mozzarella to cooked foods though,
Ok found how to change the macros what should the average settings be? 15 carb 20 protein and 65 fat??
If so I have bombed the carbs, have had several cups of tea with milk today, so that's the obvious one to change.
Will try harder tomorrow.
Have a good evening all.

Locarblil · 29/05/2014 22:08

Fascinated by all this talk of macros. Am going to scamper over to mfp to have a go in a second.

Even though I know this works and the vague science behind it, it's hard to shake that 'lean protein good' thing which has been drilled into me for so long, I think it affects the way I eat sub consciously. Does anyone else enjoy feeling quietly rebellious while eating yummy fatty foods or am I odd?

Am suddenly feeling much slimmer today and I think I look a little slimmer. May have preened a little in the work loos. I've lost a pound & a bit from the beginning of the week so not sure that's enough for this sudden outbreak of 'I feel pretty!' but will enjoy while it lasts.

B- Coffee w cream & leftover courgette fritter
L - M&S mozarella & sundried tom salad, chicken with a dip
D- Sausasge lasagna

S - Small bowl strawberries & cream, Olives & chorizo slices

May need to keep a wary eye on dairy consumption tomorrow...

Briefly checking in before I go to bed - I am in a London hotel, getting ready for my meetings tomorrow.

It is funny - as you get older, you certainly get bolder. Today, I asked for everything I wanted, politely of course, rather than settling for what I was given. I think it went quite well.

B: Sandwich shop at the airport, I asked for the breakfast sandwich, without the bread - egg, ham, mushroom and cheese. Not perfect, but a good start.
L: on flight - smoked salmon starter with slivers of butter and salad, then fish main with lobster cream sauce, but without the lentils. I asked for the veg from another meal. And then a little cheese. No bread, no fruit, and no ice cream. I did have 7 almonds but avoided all the cashews, which are my all-time favorite nut.
D: Just had a room service hamburger with mayonnaise and salad, no bun, no fries.

I also drank tons of water today - at least 4.5 ltrs - and must have got up 5 times to go to the loo on the flight.

Sleep well everybody!

Stuntnun - what should I expect to see with my bloods when I have them retested mid-June as a Type 2 diabetic, with high cholesterol. I have stayed on BC, except for the 7 almonds today, and some Japanese radishes in salads, which I did not realize were so high in carbs until I researched them. I suspect I eat too much protein to fat - and I am trying to work on this. And I may have to cut back my cheese if I stall. But I just want to be prepared if my doctor tells me to change what I am doing, as I do think this is sustainable for me. I have lost about 9 lbs so far.

glenthebattleostrich · 30/05/2014 07:21

Morning

I am unfillable at the minute, just constantly grazing :-(

Going to increase my fat intake today and hopefully that will help. Thanks for the ratios, I've adjusted my mfp settings.

I'm also getting really bad sweet cravings, any ideas on how to deal with them? Do I just need to ride them out until they go?

Today

B ff Greek yogurt
L peperami and babybel, tuna salad
T chicken breast topped with mushrooms in butter, chorizo, ham and mozzarella

KinkyDorito · 30/05/2014 07:40

Woke up with a very dry mouth in spite of 5ltrs of water yesterday and 4.5lbs lighter in 2 days. I think I'm adjusting!

CQ · 30/05/2014 08:06

Help!!! I have a hangover Hmm

Didn't drink much but my tolerance is pitiful these days as I've pretty much given up alcohol since Christmas.

Last night we were celebrating and I had champagne and red wine.

Prior to BC I would have eaten my way through a hangover with mountains of toast. Anyone got any suggestions what might help? I'm scared to go into the kitchen in case I fall head first into the breadbin Shock

KinkyDorito · 30/05/2014 08:11

Water and scrambled eggs?

KinkyDorito · 30/05/2014 08:12

Electrolytes if you have dioralyte

lowcarbforthewin · 30/05/2014 08:26

Glen, you just started right? Just keep eating fat, after a few days you stop being hungry.
The sugar cravings will lessen; your body is currently going 'I don't have my usual energy source, where is it, quick, eat sugar!' I found fruit tea helpful, and some sliced cucumber with salt helps too. As does planning meals as nice as you can make them, so you are looking forward to those instead.

RunLikeSomeFeckersChasing · 30/05/2014 08:29

Salt and vinegar on something? Chicken wings well salted? If you can share anything that works - can you guess I'm out Saturday?

RunLikeSomeFeckersChasing · 30/05/2014 08:31

Glen - I'm day 5. You need breakfast. Two eggs, 20g butter and I swear you will feel better. Much better. You need to eat more of the right stuff. Step away from the fruit...

pingufan · 30/05/2014 08:59

OMG just made bullet proof coffee for the 1st time!

Delicious and smooth, wow! The thought of it sounds horrible but its really creamy - no need to use sweetener like I'd usually have with coffee

I'm converted! Is this usually taken alone instead of breakfast?

StuntNun · 30/05/2014 09:35

Just keep eating when you're hungry Glen and the carb cravings will pass. Make sure you have lots of low carb snacks available. Olives, Babybels, Peperamis anything to get you through the transition. When I started low carbing I nearly had a 'moment' in the crisps aisle at the supermarket. Now I go to buy crisps for my kids and they don't even register as food with me.

Five litres of water Kinky? I am in awe.

A big greasy fry up is my medicinal treatment for a hangover CQ. I can't drink as much alcohol any more since LC but I guess that's probably a good thing. I get drunk really quickly now. Blush

Pingu yep BPC is much nicer than it sounds nudges BIWI to try it some time. Some people use a BPC instead of breakfast as a form of intermittent fasting but you don't have to. Remember that a BPC can be 250 calories depending how much butter and coconut oil you put in so you wouldn't want to be knocking back four or five of them a day.

Spamm it's difficult to guess at what your results might be. If your blood glucose was high then it should have come down a little, a lot of type 2 diabetics find their control improves dramatically so your fructosamine or HbA1c should be better. Your triglycerides should have come down and your HDL may have gone up but you could find that your LDL has gone up. Unfortunately the LDL test doesn't differentiate between the bad small dense LDL and the large buoyant LDL. Without seeing your before and after results it's difficult to say much more. When you get your results feel free to PM me and I will give you my two cents but bear in mind I'm not a doctor I just have an interest in the tests as I used to work for a manufacturer of blood tests. Don't get railroaded into taking statins if your cholesterol is high, do your own research first as there are pros and cons to consider.

Well with a combo of trashy's advice to watch overloading on veg ( which in my head I saw as free to gorge on when in an emotional eating frenzy) and stunts fabulous science... which has given me an epiphany...

I have shaved off the last 6 lbs in two weeks. So I am pretty much there - just the tricky party of keeping it there now and the mental struggle with always wanting to be superskinny. need to be realistic with 45 year old self, I am never going to look like DD1, aged 17 !

Thanks Thanks to Bwiw, willy stunt and absolutely everyone here......

I am not going anywhere ( apart from clothes shopping Grin Grin - as I need to keep on keeping on... but just to say - it works... I stalled for WEEKS in bootcamp1... like about 5 weeks..... and then lost a few pounds, then gained a few at Easter..... then lost a few and now -

Whooshy whoosh whoosh.....

I can see a four pack in the mirror !!

lowcarbforthewin · 30/05/2014 12:03

Well done peony!!

Just had a realisation, I remember people were talking about sports drinks to replace electrolytes and how most recipes have sugar. Well coconut water is a great replacement; supposedly has the same amount of electrolytes. If you can buy some, put some coconut milk in the fridge and it will separate out into cream and water. Voila!

Speaking of which, a nice pudding is coconut cream mixed with cacao powder. Really chocolatey, but no sugar in the cacao.

Parsnipcake · 30/05/2014 12:16

I am actually struggling a bit now I have done the macros. I made the butteriest eggs with some spinach and salmon and I'm still wildly out of proportion - only have a bit of protein left but 1000 ish calories. What low protein/ high fat foods do other people use? I may just have to eat loads of buttered spinach for tea!

monkeyfacegrace · 30/05/2014 12:20

Heyyyy, so who missed me then Grin

I'm really pleased, even after a week all inclusive and boy did I drink my share of cocktails I'm only 3lb up!

Back on it like Sonic now though, and hoping to shift those 3lb by Monday.

Will have a read through and do a mammoth post later.

BIWI · 30/05/2014 12:20

Hello all!

Just checking in from the land of the fat-free and ultra high carb diets . I'm being cooked for and absolutely no way avoiding this, so have given in. But with the result that I have my indigestion and IBS niggling away now.

glen looking at your menu I would say that you're hungry because you're not eating enough. You need more fat and more veg/salad. The other thing about this WOE is that if you're hungry then you must eat! (Low carb choices, obviously!)

pingufan · 30/05/2014 12:24

I don't think I could have more than one bpc a day, feeling a bit 'wired' is that normal?

monkeyfacegrace · 30/05/2014 12:29
