Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - the hard work is over!

Morning all!

Well done everyone for getting through the first two weeks. Still a bit of carb flu around by the sound of it though. Remember it's really important to keep your electrolyte levels up, with all the water that we're drinking. This means plenty of salt!

I know we're all told to keep the salt down, but it's (yet another) thing when you're low carbing that runs counter to expectations. Cook with it, and put it on your food.

Here's a really good post about salt and why we need it

As well as sodium, we also need magnesium and potassium - salmon, spinach, avocado and (full fat) natural yoghurt are all good.

Bootcamp Light

So now, if you want to, you can move on to Bootcamp Light. The rules for this are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

(Oh, and don't forget [[www.mumsnet.com/bootcamp the Weight Tracker as well)

Essentially the differences are that you can, if you want, start to skip breakfast if you're not hungry - I know that lots of people have problems with eating first thing. By now you should have stabilised your blood sugar levels, so if you're not hungry in the morning (or at any other time of the day) you don't have to force yourself to eat. Just make sure you don't end up ravenous later on and without anything appropriately low carb to eat!

You can introduce some fruit - berries or rhubarb only (although bear in mind that rhubarb will need to be sweetened, which will mean using an artificial sweetener; stevia is probably the best one to use - brands are PureVia or Truvia.) But be careful not to go mad - it's an occasional thing, and in moderation!

Similarly with nuts and seeds. These can be introduced now as snacks, but go easy. They can quickly add lots of carbs to your diet. Almonds and macadamias are the lowest in carbs. And if in doubt, check the carb count on the back of the packet

And you can also introduce alcohol, but with the same warnings about moderation! Spirits like vodka and gin are the best, as these are low carb - drink them with sparkling water or - if you have to - slimline tonic. Champagne, dry white and red wine are allowed, but these do have carbs, so go easy.

The week 3 (or 4, or 5) stall

PLEASE NOTE! IT IS VERY, VERY COMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER AT THIS POINT.

This is to do with your body switching from carb-burning to fat-burning - StuntNun posted a really good post about this last week, I think, and I'll ask her to re-post. It is entirely normal and doesn't signal that you're doing anything wrong.

However - you may feel, knowing this, that you want to stay on Bootcamp for a bit longer. There is no problem doing that, as long as you are getting your carbs from vegetables and salad. You may want to consider doing Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

So good luck everyone! Here's to another good week Flowers

Hissy feel free to have a good old swear on here.

It's very therapeutic and we can take it Smile. Sending you Thanks and strong vibes.

spamm · 21/05/2014 14:58

Hissy - do they have a menu posted, which we could help you with? I know that does not guarantee that food will be available, but we might be able to give you ideas.

Can we send postcards or little things to DS to keep him entertained - as it sounds like he will be in for a while? I am in the USA, so I am happy to send you a card or something, if you PM me your address.

So I finally weighed myself today - 2 lbs down, so that is 7lbs in total. I am pleased, although it is not as much as I had hoped. I am still struggling with portion sizes, so I need to focus on that.

For today:
B: eggs and fried mushrooms
L: Chicken salad
D: turkey sausages and asparagus/ courgettes

spamm · 21/05/2014 15:19

SaryaT or somebody else - could you please add my weight to the spreadsheet? 207Lbs for 19 May weigh in.

It is still telling me that I do not have the right permission - not sure why, but I cannot post on it, sorry.

glenthebattleostrich · 21/05/2014 16:01

I started my period today. Usually I have 4 days of horrific mood swings with 2 days of cramps so bad my doctor prescribed codeine so I could sleep at night.

This month I have felt a bit grumpy but generally fine and happy. I've had to take a couple of paracetamol this morning but other than being a bit sore I'm fine (can actually get up and walk without being on my painkiller rotation) and it all seems a bit lighter. In fact I was surprised until I looked at the calendar. Still massively craving carbs though. I will resist though.

Food today:

2 cups of tea with cream
scrambled eggs in butter
lunch was 2 peperami and 2 babybel as I ran out the door, then a snack of some pork scratchings.
Tea will be bolognese stuffed portabelo mushroom with some mozerella.

A bit dairy heavy again but it is keeping me away from the crisps so I can cut back a bit when the PMT has passed.

Hissy, I really hope your son is feeling better.

SayraT · 21/05/2014 16:14

Sorry spamm, away just now but can do it on Friday when I get back unless someone else does it.

WeShouldOpenABar · 21/05/2014 16:21

I got a period ? I have a coil and haven't had one since it went in. I wonder if its related to the diet at all ? I'm Angry because I do not have any idea where my mooncup has landed

glenthebattleostrich · 21/05/2014 16:22

Added for you spam

PeonyStick · 21/05/2014 16:36

openbar - if you read back through the thread this has been discussed a lot . It is a phenomenon of the WOE - as fat cells release oestrogen < looks round for stunt>

Personally - After no periods for 3 years - had a permanent period from wk2 of last bootcamp ( jan) to this last week . I had lots of medical tests - but it just sorted itself out and nothing was found .

RoaringForties · 21/05/2014 16:57

Hissy so sorry you and your little one are going through this, sending you healing thoughts and Thanks

StuntNun · 21/05/2014 16:59

As Peony says OpenBar, the fat cells contain oestrogen which is released when you lose weight (on any diet not just low carb). Once your body adjusts your hormone levels will go back to normal. I'm another one who has gone from hideous PMT and painful periods to not-bad PMT (still get a bit hangry) and pain-free periods.

Best1sWest · 21/05/2014 17:20

Hissy, sending all the best to you and DS.

pingufan · 21/05/2014 17:30

Sorry to hear about your son Hissy, I hope he recovers well xxx

FolknNorah · 21/05/2014 17:33

Thanks to hissy and her ds

My periods have got earlier in the month since starting his WOE. Weird innit?

I'm feeling and looking bloated today, Haven't cheated at all, it's not that TOTM, any ideas what it is?

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 21/05/2014 18:00

Thanks all, isn't dioralyte sugar though? I use sea salt crystals in cooking and drinking fizzy mineral water.
I've had a totally shite day, and the Bombay sapphire is calling ( and the dark chocolate) but I have had 4 strawberries with lunch (little gem, mozzarella balls, Parma ham) was v hungry when I got in so had some wafer thin ham, and Brittany butter. Dinner is smoked haddock, baked in oven with butter, broccoli. Dd is sat with a whopping big plate of pineapple, strawberries and melon. My mouth is watering.

ImSoOverIt · 21/05/2014 18:29

Fuuuck! I've just started bleeding too, and I haven't had any more than a slight show since I had my Mirena fitted in 2012! And this is a proper bleed as well. No pain with it though, and this is rare as I have endometriosis. How bizarre.

ImSoOverIt · 21/05/2014 18:30

I don't know what to do I haven't bought tampons in 2 years and I have nothing in! Grin

WeShouldOpenABar · 21/05/2014 18:36

me either imsooverit I had to send dp out !Smile

lowcarbforthewin · 21/05/2014 18:38

Hissy hope you've got through the day ok.
I had a much better day, none of the hunger of yesterday
Breakfast was egg frittata with butter
Lunch smoked salmon with a salad with avocado and olive oil
Strawberries and some Brazil nuts for my snack
Supper is a beef burger and I fancy making some aubergine and courgette crisps.
I really didn't miss sorry today, phew.

LittleMissDisorganized · 21/05/2014 18:41

Oh Hissy how awful. Sending you lots of love - if you're in my local burns centre (Whiston Hospital, no need to say on the thread) then I would be so happy to help with food and anything else you need. I will pray for you if that's ok. Postcards is a good idea, me too though far less exotic!

OpenBar mooncup has landed made me giggle! Actually, me neither... and I spot past my Mirena these last few months eating LC, though the things never seem to make me amenorrheic for longer than a couple of years.

Dioralyte does indeed contain sugar (it wouldn't work if it didn't), please don't drink it unless you have a gastroenteritis type illness.

I have an ears/ throat/ sinus bug (again, doesn't seem all that long since the last one though it is a good couple of months) and I feel terrible. Spent most of the day in bed feeling rough. Voice is sore and scratchy. It's only when I feel ill like this that I suddenly have a desire for carbs - I'd have loved some toast this morning Angry but I don't even think about it the rest of the time. I've just about resisted - it's just not worth it. Dinner is home roasted ham and buttery spinach. Mmmm. Croak. Etc.

ImSoOverIt · 21/05/2014 18:41

We should - I also have a missing mooncup - god knows where it got to! Last time I remember having it was ages ago and I have moved house twice since then! I wonder where it ended up! Blush

ImSoOverIt · 21/05/2014 18:47

Right going to attempt a 50 minute run. A bit apprehensive as running during my period used to trigger severe pain and cramps, and I am feeling a couple of minor twinges ATM. I am going to see how I go but I may bow out if it gets uncomfortable. Smile

Best1sWest · 21/05/2014 19:22

Such a gorgeous day today. Went for a long walk on the beach this morning, just me and the dog. It was heaven. Just stunning.

Attempted to do uber bootcamp but might have scuppered myself by accidentally drinking a cup of coffee with milk. I completely forgot.

trashcanjunkie · 21/05/2014 19:36

Lurking. Still shitting. Eating salads and yoghurt.

LadyWithLapdog · 21/05/2014 20:08

Hissy - I've just caught up with the thread. Best wishes for a good recovery for your DS.

wombat22 · 21/05/2014 20:11

Get well soon trash and hoping your DS makes a speedy recovery hissy Thanks
