Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - the hard work is over!

Morning all!

Well done everyone for getting through the first two weeks. Still a bit of carb flu around by the sound of it though. Remember it's really important to keep your electrolyte levels up, with all the water that we're drinking. This means plenty of salt!

I know we're all told to keep the salt down, but it's (yet another) thing when you're low carbing that runs counter to expectations. Cook with it, and put it on your food.

Here's a really good post about salt and why we need it

As well as sodium, we also need magnesium and potassium - salmon, spinach, avocado and (full fat) natural yoghurt are all good.

Bootcamp Light

So now, if you want to, you can move on to Bootcamp Light. The rules for this are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

(Oh, and don't forget [[www.mumsnet.com/bootcamp the Weight Tracker as well)

Essentially the differences are that you can, if you want, start to skip breakfast if you're not hungry - I know that lots of people have problems with eating first thing. By now you should have stabilised your blood sugar levels, so if you're not hungry in the morning (or at any other time of the day) you don't have to force yourself to eat. Just make sure you don't end up ravenous later on and without anything appropriately low carb to eat!

You can introduce some fruit - berries or rhubarb only (although bear in mind that rhubarb will need to be sweetened, which will mean using an artificial sweetener; stevia is probably the best one to use - brands are PureVia or Truvia.) But be careful not to go mad - it's an occasional thing, and in moderation!

Similarly with nuts and seeds. These can be introduced now as snacks, but go easy. They can quickly add lots of carbs to your diet. Almonds and macadamias are the lowest in carbs. And if in doubt, check the carb count on the back of the packet

And you can also introduce alcohol, but with the same warnings about moderation! Spirits like vodka and gin are the best, as these are low carb - drink them with sparkling water or - if you have to - slimline tonic. Champagne, dry white and red wine are allowed, but these do have carbs, so go easy.

The week 3 (or 4, or 5) stall

PLEASE NOTE! IT IS VERY, VERY COMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER AT THIS POINT.

This is to do with your body switching from carb-burning to fat-burning - StuntNun posted a really good post about this last week, I think, and I'll ask her to re-post. It is entirely normal and doesn't signal that you're doing anything wrong.

However - you may feel, knowing this, that you want to stay on Bootcamp for a bit longer. There is no problem doing that, as long as you are getting your carbs from vegetables and salad. You may want to consider doing Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

So good luck everyone! Here's to another good week Flowers

Morning all!

Interesting piece here about the 'secret' of the Mediterranean diet

Apparently it's the combination of oil + veg ...

I'm off now for ten days or so - have little hope of Bootcamping, especially the second part of my holiday when I will be staying with relatives, so looks like I'll be back to Bootcamp when I return!

I have my iPad with me, so may check in from time to time. Just so you know that I'm watching Grin

But the big stick rests with StuntNun for the moment, and she is going to start the new chat threads for the next couple of weeks.

This article explains very well why we need to eat lots of fat on during cow carb diet weight loss program:

JimmyCorkhill · 22/05/2014 08:16

My husband is in a field in which he has recourse to chat with several functional bowel specialists

It took me a while to realise that your DH wasn't actually IN a field talking to these people. Had to re read your post as I was so confused as to why they had this conversation on a farm Blush

Hissy & Sarah

The red dress is a size 16 and from the Coleen Rooney collection. I bought it last year, never worn it and decided yesterday it has to go.

The other two dresses are from Primark, I bought them a while ago but I never worn them and now they are too large. Size 18 with a zip on the side.

Will upload more later.

Big hugs to Hissy. Hope your son has a better day today. Please don't beat yourself up about the accident. Easier said than done, but it really was an accident. My husband slipped on ice and dropped our youngest, breaking her leg when she was only 11m old. He still has flashbacks and goes a bit funny whenever we go past the park where it happened, but like your case, it was just a horrible accident, no one's fault.

So three days of ubercamp have resulted in a 5.5lb loss here, bringing me to my lowest Bootcamp weight. Hoping the rest of the week on Bootcamp proper will shift that motherloving stall!
Dairy-free and caffeine free is miserable though. 3 days is manageable, but I'd rather lose very slowly on BC/BC light than live on a diet that strict. Celebrating this morning with a proper cup of tea. Bliss!

jimmy that's fab, I clearly need to think about what I'm posting better at 6:45am!

thumb not sure I was clear in what I was trying to say! Itst not that these people think thatIBS, as in the symptoms, doesn't exist. It's that they think there is no such thing as a simply "sensitive" bowel - people are reacting to things that we can't yet test for, or have a disease process that we can't yet test for i.e in support of everyone 's experiences here. DH comes under the converts bracket yet is horrified at the idea of trying it himself!

Clearly early morning pre coffee posts are not my forte!

SirNoel · 22/05/2014 09:04

Well done Minty

Have a great hol BIWI

rubybricks · 22/05/2014 09:27

morning all!

had to force myself to have eggs this morning, the next few days' menus will be interesting as i'm determined to clear out the freezer which needs defrosting...

glad to hear things are on the move for you minty, i am finding the water intake (slow and steady) hard to keep up with as well, though i drink enough tea and coffee throughout the day it shouldn't be a problem Smile

had a difficult day yesterday and was forcibly derailed a couple of times by the need not to appear rude/turn down food, which culminated in a 'sod it then, i WILL have that chocolate' moment later in the evening. it could have been worse, it really could (there was no alcohol involved), and i am firmly back on the bandwagon today, having also weighed my lowest b/c weight yesterday morning!

(((hugs))) to hissy, chin up to anyone else who's struggling, and have a great holiday BIWI!

prettybird · 22/05/2014 10:10

Finally getting round to signing in. Not such a good week: anniversary on Friday and then out all day both Saturday and Sunday at rugby related events, so really only able to eat what I could get hold off and I was both baking for and looking after a cake stall on the Saturday Blush

Wasn't able to keep up the water intake, so all in all, quite pleased that I managed to STS

readyforno2 · 22/05/2014 10:18

Didn't get round to signing in yesterday. Feeling pretty awful to be honest.
Sore head and throat and feeling really dizzy. People keep asking if it's because of this 'diet'. I feel like I'm eating just as much now as I ever was it's just different
Personally, I think it's because ds2 has been getting up at between 5-6 every morning for the last 3 weeks while dp has been away and he's not back for another week

So yesterday
B - Greek yog, coffee
L - 2 eggs scrambled and broccoli, cauliflower and Stilton soup
D - roast chicken with skin and huge salad

No snacks
Probably about 7 pints of water (was at aerobics and it was boiling)

Haven't decided on today's food but have had Greek yog this morning.

trashcanjunkie · 22/05/2014 11:17

Morning all - still buggered in the belly department. Has anyone else had food poisoning from pork? How long did their bad arse last? I'm definitely better than I was, but still bedridden and in pain after every bit of food.

Good god.

BIWI have a great holiday

Thumbwitch · 22/05/2014 12:14

Ah right, SarahBeeny - I get you. :) Maybe you could sneak some GF alternatives into the house and see if he improves any? My preference in pasta, for e.g., is Orgran rice and millet pasta - it has more substance to it than just the plain rice pasta, and DH likes it as well as wheat pasta. Rice and vegetable pasta (tricolore) is nice too but a little more squishy. Dove's Farm do a nice rice penne pasta too. I don't get on well with corn either so those corn pastas do nothing for me. :)

LittleMissDisorganized · 22/05/2014 12:30

BIWI have a great holiday, it sounds wonderful! Hope the lovely StuntNun is practising her stick waving gravitas!!

Minty well done and I think there are plenty of people not switching to BCLite

lines I completely agree with you re the slow and sustainable thing. If it takes a long time to steadily succeed, so be it. Occasionally I need a big stick to get me back into a stricter phase though.

Jimmy Grin

trash have you been to the doctors? Sounds like they need to send a faeces sample to the lab for microbiology to see what grows - and then they can give you the right antibiotics to treat the bug. This has gone on long enough - you need to go back. Keep getting what you can into yourself - I can give you the how-to-make-your-own Dioralyte recipe if you think you are dehydrated and stripped of nutrients. It's not LC though - you need to look after yourself first and foremost.

I feel sinusy and terrible and it is the worst of temptations time for me. Don't know why, don't miss bread etc usually. I saw a friend this morning (I snuggled up on her settee!) and she said to make whatever my ultimate LC comfort food is. So it's cauli/broccoli cheese for tea chez Little Miss I think. I might even make some real custard with a small amount of sweetener in. Desperate times and all that...

Have fab-larse hols BIWI

Enjoy!

Raining here, we went to a concert last night and I only had 4 hours sleep. I can feel hungrier today. I wonder if that's the reason.
Killing hunger with black tea (I don't use milk at all).

I am ver positive about monday weigh in. I can see pounds are dropping off but obviously can only confirm on Monday and last weekend was quite bad Grin

trashcanjunkie · 22/05/2014 13:54

LMD great minds think alike Grin have spoken to my doctors this morning and I'm going to take a sample in this afternoon . She said she'd put money on it being salmonella or campylobacter.

Was gonna buy some dioralytes when I crawl from bed to do school run and poop drop in a bit.

Sympathies to your poor old sinuses Thanks

Antimatter yes tiredness makes me hungry too!

spamm · 22/05/2014 14:09

Hello all

BIWI - enjoy your hols, we will hold down the fort and you know that Stuntnun will be a great stand-in for you!

Hissy - hope DS is feeling better today! Did you see my postcard idea upthread?

Minty - I am sticking to the basic BC, not adding anything in for a few weeks yet, as I have plenty of way to go and I am not feeling deprived. The only change I am making is consciously trying to manage portion sizes, as I think I am still eating too much.

Today's plan:
B: Scrambled eggs and pork sausages (did not have time to do mushrooms)
L: Salad with avocado, egg and blue cheese - no chicken today, as yesterday I left most of it, I was not hungry
D: Hmmm - not sure, but will include courgettes and some meat

Two things from me:

  • before I started this woe, I was struggling big time with hunger. I would wake up feeling hungry and it would go on throughout the day. I figure that was the insulin spikes people have spoken about, as I have also been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Now my hunger is very different and I am not fighting it all the time.
  • I am taking a few different types of supplements, which I feel may be helping. I was wondering if anybody else is taking anything? I have very high doses of vitamin D (prescribed - 1x per week), Omega 3 oils, a multivitamin, glucosamine for my knees and a probiotic supplement, as well as Chromium picolinate. I have never been good at taking supplements except when I was pregnant, and I ahve never been very good at taking care of myself, as so many other people and things come first in my head. So I am trying to take care of me. What are your views on supplements?
antimatter · 22/05/2014 14:36

spamm I think your knees will improve as your weight drops
also probably absorptions of witamins and minerals

Pisseslikeahorse · 22/05/2014 15:53

afternoon campers - just found out a higher form of torture, icing fairy cakes with DS2 who wanted to feed me from the bow... I didn'tSmile

b.Yogurt
L.Tuna omlet fried veg
D.Roast chicken celeriac chips & spinach

lowcarbforthewin · 22/05/2014 16:01

Have a lovely time BIWI!

I am making this tonight!! Cauliflower base pizza. It was hard finding one without dairy in it but this looks good. Going to top it with salami, pesto and maybe some other sausages. I can't wait.

I have discovered olive tapanade is a really nice snack with some cauliflower bites. It's also nice stirred into salad. Just another flavour to mix things up a bit.

I weighed myself this morning. Day 4 of no dairy and no loss on the scales still. It sucks but I do feel like I'm now getting lighter so I'm going to ignore the scales. I don't trust them that much anyway; earlier in the year they were registering that I'd lost 2 lbs in 3 months, but I'd lost five inches off my hips. I know this works for me. I'd still like to see scale losses but am NOT going to give into self pity and cheat.
