Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

Are you sure on that carb count for the coconut cream ImSoOver? What brand is it?

RoaringForties · 06/05/2014 10:58

MorningSmile
Breakfast was scrambled eggs with the last nights avocado salad. Not sure about lunch and tea yet but will pop into Lidl later.

Weighed in at 168.8 this morning, not good but could be a lot worse as I have been a right carby bastard. I lost 15lbs on last years summer bootcamp so hoping to get back on track.

Water, water water and repeat.

thank you biwi and everyone for all the support.

PseudoBadger · 06/05/2014 10:58

Ah sorry is that Blue Dragon?

LittleMissDisorganized · 06/05/2014 11:05

Hotsauce if by low carb pasta you mean those shiritaki noodles?? then yes, a lot of people have tried and successfully used those. I think occasionally having them as a pasta/ noodles substitute is fine (I do) - and I think BIWI has mentioned them as ok in the past too. Just be careful of the 'Atkins' brand pasta which is not nearly low carb enough. I tried a low carb wrap... once... like eating actual cardboard.

I think the risk with using these substitutes, and it's the same for sweeteners too, is that a) you risk refuelling your carb cravings all over again, because you want the real thing, and b) at a biochemical level there is some evidence that because your brain tastes sweet, or knows it is bread, it stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin even though the gut has not absorbed any glucose, and this causes fat to be pushed into cells, and also for your blood sugar to drop, which makes you hungry (your liver would eventually make eg glucose from protein in this situation but most of us would have eaten yet more as a result before this can occur). And these two reasons are why they are not allowed/ recommended on Bootcamp.

magso redbush and mint infusions are fine and count towards your water. Am drooling at the thought of Bruges chocolate museum... mmmm...Grin

Arti and others struggling with carb flu it does get better, and while it can take a while, you will potentially feel better than you've done in years. I don't want to go back to the feeling of day in day out carbs in my system - I feel so different this side of January bootcamp. It's such an addictive substance to give such a physical withdrawal.

I started the week with scrambled eggs and bacon - haven't done that for ages, have switched to egg-in-a-cup mostly after Sayra got me convinced!! But it was yummy.
Lunch with be what's known in our house as 'cajun birdseed chicken' - with rocket and mayo and oil. And tonight we have leftovers - including roast beef and cauli/broccoli cheese. Mmmmm. It's not a bad life at all :)

trashcanjunkie · 06/05/2014 11:17

Man alive, I'm late and behind with the thread. Gonna do a crabby super post, so forgive me if I am not quite with the program, or out of date Grin

locarblil I totally agree with what you said about temptation not being such an issue after the first two weeks - When I first lc it was torture doing the dcs packed lunches.... now I barely register - in fact I can be quite grossed out by wheatyness

feesh that is what food processors are for Grin What type of twins have you got? I have non id boys. (nine now) Aah, it's ok, I am reading the thread as I write.... 17months. I remember the days all too well!

lowcarbforthewin I love a bit o' bone broth, what do you use? Last time I bought a beef bone from a local cash n carry. I actually roasted it first ate the delicious marrow before I made the stock, which possibly defeats the object, but hey ho....

felixfelix My water drinking is my new religion. I have it down pat now.

Once every few weeks I treat myself to a new two or 1.5ltr bottle of mineral water.

I replace the lid with a sports cap (I have a sistema one that was from the kids lunchboxes, you know the paraben free ones from sainsbos - they fit most bottles perfectly) for ease of access, and basically I treat it like my handbag/mobile phone - it goes everywhere I do.

When ever I see it, I swig. Now, I'm not just talking a mimsy little sup here, I'm talking an extended slurp. In fact, I even have a little sentence I say in my head as I do this (just realising this as I type) - something along the lines of "go on lass, get it down yer neck, chug chug chug" Hmm yes odd, but something to distract me whilst I drink.

I aim to have the first bottle drunk no later than 3.15pm (school pick up time) and then I immediately refill and get chugging again. The only time I don't carry it is when I'm walking dogs (my job, and that happens an hour at a time, so then I leave it in the car) I guzzle every time I hit a red light in the car. I have to say this is habit now, and my pissing is normal, and I am thirsty if I drop below three ltr daily....

It takes discipline, but it's so worth it.

crabby Yippee

peony I survived the bbq! But realised several things.... I fucking detest children Blush Obvsiously I love my own, but having trashpup is attracting all sorts of unwanted attention and..... touching ugh from kids I can't quite believe it! I thought I liked them.....

The whole thing was rather stressful, and I am realising also that my bessie mate is weirdly controlling (of everyone and everything) and it's becoming too much for me....

I will give an extended dissection of how later Grin

GOT was amazing of course, but we felt robbed on time! Was it short?

imsooverit tescos, but look in the world/ethnic foods bit - they do a pricey one in the wanky food section, but a much cheaper one in the ethnic section - I failed to find any difference in them bar price...

oh piss I'm out of time and only half way through the thread! will pop back after work

Hello littlemiss xx

PeonyStick · 06/05/2014 11:31

Gosh I had forgotten how fast the thread moves at the start of bootcamp ! Just a quick SMS as am working from home anything but

Hello to old friends and new ( I am a new name ( whooshfuckerfairy in a new reincarnation) but is my second bootcamp. Lost a stone and have put 4 back on. ANother stone and the well deserved 4lb to lose.

stunt I never knew that about BPC, so do you think I can leave until I get nearer my target - I just cant face it, but will force the issue on myself if it will be a miracle.

cherrypi babybels survive quite well and I am assured raw swede slices are delish I can tolerate with marmite on, but I am a marmite wierdo

trashy completely hearing you on other people's children - but then we have just had 15x four year olds charging all over the house being pirates......

Loving the mantra and think it should be adopted

Grin

Bough a collar for the Peonypup today, as we are choosing from the litter on Saturday - !

FelixFelix · 06/05/2014 11:43

'Go on lass, get it down yer neck, chug chug chug!' is my new motto Grin

ImSoOverIt · 06/05/2014 11:50

Yes pseudo - blue dragon, pretty sure that's what it said on box?

GuyMartinsSideburns · 06/05/2014 12:01

FelixFelix glad its not just me then Grin Thanks for the ideas!

Cottage pie made (not shepherds pie, duh) and ds back on the breast. Im amazed I manage to get anything done tbh. Still Im enjoying the snuggly stage while it lasts. Been beating myself up a bit for not doing the shred dvd yet or running but am trying to tell myself that when Im done breastfeeding etc I can aim to get as fit as possible then. Not easy though when you've been pregnant at the same time as other mums at school and have had to watch them all ping back into shape... I carry it all on my arse and thighs and so am still in maternity jeans Blush Sorry to go off on one, feeling a bit craptastic

Ooh Peony we're getting a Labrador pup next week! I haven't had a dog for years, its our first family dog and the kids are so excited! Ive realised how manic my days are now going to be but maybe thatll help with the weightloss Grin The litter is next door so we've been having the pub round for a bit a few times, she was round last night and ds was sat in his bouncy chair, she stayed sitting next to him then fell asleep with her head resting next to his feet. Was verrr cute. Makes me laugh too that theres only a few weeks difference between them in age Grin

lowcarbforthewin · 06/05/2014 12:13

Guy martins I find things like sprats, sardines, smoked fish and frittata are all good. And then sometimes low carb cauliflower cheese. Maybe a mushroom dish would work, like a mushroom bake with cheese. Oyster mushrooms I think have loads of protein and you could make a big batch and then just reheat each day.

lowcarbforthewin · 06/05/2014 12:19

Trashcan I guffawed at 'I fucking detest children' Grin

The bone bone broth my friend made came from this lamb dish she'd made me, it was by Ottolenghi And it had fennel seeds and turnip in it and it is just divine. I have some duck legs in the freezer (I am OBSESSED with duck legs right now) and I'm tempted to try a stock with those too. Anything to spread out the ducky goodness.

If anyone hasn't tried duck legs, buy some. Rub olive oil all over them, add salt and pepper and roast for 90mins at 180 degrees till the skin is crispy as fuck. Yummmm.

alleypalley · 06/05/2014 12:51

Started today. Forgot to weight myself this morning though.

I had avocado for breakfast. Will have chicken salad for lunch and duck confit with veg for dinner I think.

I need to drink more water though, I've had such a busy morning I keep forgetting.

FolknNorah · 06/05/2014 12:51

Hi all, hope you're all doing ok?

Shouting my shit.
B: mint tea yoghurt and linseeds
Snack: Parma ham rolled around soft cheese (3)
D: steak with mushrooms and leeks
T: chicken and spinach with caulirice (well mashed really as I'm lazy)
Butter etc etc added, cooked with.

Am almost halfway through my water today. Struggling with it a bit, but I do the water bottle thing as well and keep it with me. I also use a jug at home to help measure it out.
Laters..

pregnantpause · 06/05/2014 13:11

Checking in.

B- scrambled eggs and butter
L- egg mayo lettuce boats
D- king prawns with garlic butter and salad
Snack- mini mozzarella balls wrapped in basil leaves.

I'm in work today for a twelve hour shift. The carby twats around me are moaning about their weight and how they have to starve themselves. I'm happily eating my cheese balls and inwardly smugGrin

olivesnutsandcheese · 06/05/2014 13:18

hello all

just shouting my shit:

b: green tea
l: lidl tuna with cherries (without the cherries) avocado & salad
d: bolognese with konjac noodles (can recommend these for a good bowel cleanse Blush )

too busy at toddler group this morning to drink any water so making myself down 2 pints before I collect DSS from school

BIWI · 06/05/2014 13:33

Feesh:

I am seriously hopeful scared I am going to kill my husband with this diet! I have been cooking some of the recipes from the recipe thread for dinner and it's all very fat/cheese/cream heavy! He needs to lose weight, but he won't low carb (in fact he won't diet full stop) and I am a bit worried about worsening his health if we carry on eating like this together,

Does he have to know he's low carbing?! Will he complain bitterly if his plate doesn't have potatoes or rice or pasta on it, as long as the rest of the meal is delicious?

If you're in charge of the cooking then surely he just has to cook what you've made! And in which case, he will end up low carbing. (Although obviously what he does during the day is up to him ... )

OP posts:
BIWI · 06/05/2014 13:36

BTW - be careful with creamed coconut - it's much, much carbier than coconut cream!

Creamed coconut 22g carbs per 100g
Coconut cream 7g carbs per 100g
Coconut milk 6g carbs per 100g

OP posts:
BIWI · 06/05/2014 13:37

The Weight Tracker - because we've only entered one data point so far, there is nothing to see. When you enter next week's weight you'll see the chart start to build up

OP posts:
FelixFelix · 06/05/2014 13:39

BIWI sorry I'm being a bit stupid here - where can I find the weight tracker?

BIWI · 06/05/2014 13:40

And re low carb wraps/pasta - absolutely agree with the advice above about trying to avoid 'fake' substitutes. And have a read here about how some low carb pasta may be nothing but!

Shirataki noodles are a reasonably good substitute for noodles/spaghetti - you can buy them in Asian supermarkets, or you can order them online from Amazon

They have a rubbery texture, not unlike rice noodles, and they have a very strange smell when you open the packet. They are stored in liquid, and it's actually the liquid that smells. Once the noodles are rinsed, they are tasteless. They work really well in a Chinese/Thai-style broth, made with chicken stock and fresh coriander. (Not sure if there's a recipe on the recipe thread)

OP posts:
FelixFelix · 06/05/2014 13:42

Ignore that, I've realised there's a link on the first post!

FolknNorah · 06/05/2014 14:00

My tiny and very shit tescos sells coconut oil with the food oil etc.which is weird because it's exactly where you'd think it might be (aside from the exotic foodstuffs) and is so totally unlike that fucking shop I can't quite get my heard around it. I mean it doesn't sell celeriac or ff total Greek yoghurt or anything.! Parma ham was found because it is on offer.!

cousinsandra · 06/05/2014 14:12

Hello

Would like to join you after a shocking Bank Holiday weekend! The link to the weigh in takes me to the veg/carb list. Is there another link please?

Locarblil · 06/05/2014 14:35

Well that was an epic-ly crap morning. DS decided today was the day to have a massive tantrum, I'm carb fluey, didn't get a chance to eat lunch until just now... Reader, I ate some of DH's Easter chocolate (What sort of numpty still has chocolate left from Easter anyway?).

However it was disgustingly sweet and made me gag (sorry TMI). Still cross with myself though.

Cousinsandra - the link is at the top of the page. It took me some confused peering to see it too

spamm · 06/05/2014 14:41

Ok - day 2 for me, and I am 3 lbs down, but I am not sure if that the the LC or my new diabetes meds.

Anyway, my Dr is supportive of LC, so I am trying to get this underway. I am struggling with the concept of eating fatty foods, as my whole life I have been drilled to avoid them, but that has not worked, has it!

Yesterday:
B: Cheese sticks and celery ( I did not have stuff in, but am now organized)
L: Fabulous salad from a place near work - with chicken, lettuce, avocado, egg and blue cheese and a creamy vinaigrette - great to know I can go there anytime
D: Korean beef (made without the brown sugar, but do not tell DH) , served on coleslaw type veg instead of rice

Did not need snacks, as was not hungry.

Today:
B: Scrambled egg, turkey sausage (no carbs) and fried mushroom - I am stuffed!
L: ?? - something out, so likely salad with chicken
D: Roast chicken and courgettes, with salad if needed.

DH also did a shop for me, so I have plenty of supplies. He is flying to the UK for a week or so visiting family and going to the Rugby 7s at Twickenham, so this should be easier to kick things off while he is away.

The difficult part is going to be work lunches - always sandwiches and salad, followed by fruit and cookies. I will have a chat with my PA and see if she can help me out.

Now to work my way through that water. Thankful for sodastream, so I can make my water fizzy!
