Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

Guy I am with you - its all on my thighs and arse too ( hence my original MN name ' MrsHughJarse !). Take comfort though - its supposed to be a healthier shape and help prevent heart disease and osteoporosis ! - and how exciting about Lab puppyness - we can compare chewed furniture and widdled on carpets Grin. Our house is very far from renovated yet - so it couldn't matter one jot. Hats off to you for new baby and new puppy at the same time - but I guess.... once you're in the midst of madness... it makes sense to hit it all at once !

Olive that Lidl smoked tuna with cherries you better hide from Biwi's stick, but there is literally one one slice of cherry in it Biwi , honest! is on Sayra and my orgasmic list...... wait until you try the irish duck Grin

lowcarbforthewin · 06/05/2014 14:47

Spamm it's so hard to get your head round, isn't it? I still get a bit anxious about adding fat, but then I've lost so much weight eating fat and I was on a low fat diet for years and looked dreadful. Really couldn't shift the weight either.

Ruprekt · 06/05/2014 15:02

Scram eggs with ham for breakfast

Beef slices with cold butter, mustard and cucumber. Grin

Not sure about dinner yet.

Nearly drunk 2 litres water. Smile

glenthebattleostrich · 06/05/2014 15:13

Just finishing my 3rd litre of water, only 1/2 litre to go.

Huge thanks for the strawberry and cucumber tip it is delicious and for the cream in tea suggestion.

I love a cup of caffeine free tea before bed and the cream is lovely.

So far so good today, I'm even managing to avoid snacking. The bad news is I forgot to cancel my graze box and I really want the pretzels which have just arrived. Will feed them to the preschoolers to avoid temptation.

FelixFelix · 06/05/2014 15:18

I agree it's so hard to get your head around eating fat, when it's been drilled in to us to eat low fat 'healthy' options for so many years. I've turned a bit evangelical about it and keep lecturing people about how much crap is in their muller lights Grin

CQ · 06/05/2014 15:25

Day 1. Feeling a bit bleurgh now. Just done a huge Ocado order so I'm not tempted to put anything evil in my trolley. I think if I set foot in a supermarket right now I would be standing in the fresh bakery snarfing down white bread rolls….

Anyone else got some seriously loud gurgling going on in the guts? Must be all the water. Grin

petalsandstars · 06/05/2014 15:30

So far had greek yog for breakfast and smoked salmon with salad and coleslaw for lunch. Only one coffee so far but just dozed with baby so might have to have another.

F1onajb · 06/05/2014 15:35

Would it be ok to make a soup of courgettes, shallots, celery and carrotts in a veg or chicken stock? could I have this inbetween a meal? first day today:

b - omlette
l - chicken with tomato, cucumber, lettuce, spring onion and egg
d - not sure yet!

drinking green tea and already had nearly 2 litres of water.

Hissy · 06/05/2014 15:37

I started yesterday, full of good intentions, but friend brought a flask of G&T to the picnic....

I did drink lots of water though... and didn't eat too much at all besides tomatoes.

Peony, I saw that Lidl tuna with cherry! i shall save that for POST-BC.

So we have started with gusto today:

B: Yoghurt with Vanilla & cinnamon, black coffee
L: roast beef and bresaola, avocado, tomatoes, cucumbers and a slice of cheese
D: not sure yet, probably salmon, prawn, avocado, asparagus with salad and mayo.

have a shop coming tonight with lots of smoked salmon and stuff. pork scratchings too IIRC! :-P

BPD, I'm distinctly unsure of that... sounds bleugh! I just drink black coffee anyway, not a fan of latte at all, but as said I may try it if I need to get some fat back into the diet.

gillyginger · 06/05/2014 15:50

F1 I make a soup with shallots, courgettes, and celery or spinach, with a stock cube, I would leave out the carrot though as it could be a bit carby, I have a sprinkling of goats cheese in it as well to top up fat content.

notamonkeysuncle · 06/05/2014 16:13

Aargh its a lovely sunny day here and have been to the park with some friends where everyone except me had ice cream Angry

I had a babybel instead.
B-scrambled eggs and mushrooms
L-bacon salad with homemade coleslaw
D- cottage pie but without spuds, with parsnip and carrot mash

F1onajb · 06/05/2014 16:31

Thanks gillyginger will do Smile

BIWI · 06/05/2014 17:17

And don't forget everyone we have a specific thread for questions!

These threads move so quickly, especially in the first few weeks, it's a good place to put a question, to make sure that someone sees it and tries to give you an answer!

artibartfarst I have been a foul mooded cunt, but I blamed lady hormones... I don't think it counts for guys... Seriously, it does pass, and then you feel good. Like, really good. Three days is my normal...

peony that is massively exciting news!! (puppy collar) I have had the trashpup round the park everyday with my work doggies. She is proper friends with the enormous greyhound (retired racer) who I first feared might eat her. She keeps up with all the other dogs marvelously now. She's doing about a mile...

guy A labrador? Eek, how bloody brilliant, although, the pair of you can keep yer massive dogs, with their massive poos and wees. I'm delighted with the tiny turds and trickles I'm dealing with entirely cancelled out by the buckets of shite from dps staffi

Although, I have a puppy query? Everything I've read says they don't ever wee in their beds/crates. Trashpup is definitely pissing in her bed through the night. I am just washing the bedding and making no fuss... she's getting the hang of it the rest of the time... will she grow out of it? (I must ring the breeder and ask)

Now back to proper bc chat...
B= 3 eggs scram in olive oil... (shopping day tomorrow)

L=belly pork from morrisons cookey chicken bit - grim as fuck.

dinner is in the oven - roast chicken thighs with broc baby spinach and aspargagus.

Feeling tired today - dp and I are not sleeping particularly well at the moment. We're on a program of earlier nights with proper 'going to bed' procedures (no screens, low light etc) I go off easily but I wake up loads with really sore boobs and a stiff stiff neck. Got to wait til June for physio. Dp is anxious and it's becoming problematic again - he jumps and twitches all night long. I suspect heavily that it's work related. He works in Mental Health and the burn out rate is high. He has slid off lc - which is fine, he's a couple of stone heavier than he'd like, but he certainly isn't fat by any stretch. But I think eating wheat exacerbates his anxiety/low mood. It certainly does his arse no favours, and I have kind of put my foot down about it. I will not sleep in a stinking fug, so if he's going to eat wheat products he can sleep elsewhere. He has promised to curtail it Grin

noidia · 06/05/2014 17:30

Hello everyone!
Posting not reading but will try to catch up later. Starting today as we were away for the Bank Holiday weekend. I've done BC before (the one before last and lurking not posting), managed to drop about a stone, but have put around 6-7 llbs back on through letting the carbs creep in (bread mainly – still don't like or eat pasta) along with a taste for cream in my coffee – and just being generally lax eating crisps, lots more fruit, the odd cake/dark chocolate etc. Really miss the great feeling I used to get being in ketosis and in the swing of this WOE – not being hungry, flat stomach, improved skin (no redness on bridge of nose) SO I WANT IT BACK
Dreading the carb flu which I know I'll get but hoping to keep strong and get through it (Failed miserably last time) and have started posting for support from you lovely low-carbers, and to post my meals to keep myself focused.
So far today:
B Coffee with cream, full fat creamy yoghurt
L Two scrambled eggs in butter
D (early as off to exercise class later) chicken in butter (GLORIOUS) with courgettes/brocolli (also in butter)

Not enough water....

IWillIfHeWill · 06/05/2014 18:03

Day 2 nearly over... thanks for the support! Daughter is being fantastically supportive too.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 06/05/2014 18:06

Did well yesterday. Although dh doesn't quite get it. No dear, chips and chocolate count. Ffs. I managed my water (spent the night up and down like a yo yo.)
Today. Greek yog, cream and coconut cream. Felt a bit sick after that.
Morning break, celery, marmite full fat cream cheese.
Lunch. Mini bacon and cheese frittatas with green salad and vinaigrette.
Dinner will be chicken thighs, fried in butter, with bacon lardons, a clove of garlic, green beans and broccoli.
Has anyone used the chili in a tube? Will that be ok do you think?
Treat tonight coffee and cream.
Leftover chicken in a soup for tomorrow's lunch.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/05/2014 18:30

Hello all, as always trying to keep up!

StuntNun · 06/05/2014 18:37

I'm loving all the extra water, I had really let that slide but I think I needed more than I was drinking pre-Bootcamp.

B: Lidl Greek yoghurt with cream, tea
L: Three eggs scrambled, tea
S: Babybel (and 10g dark choc sssh don't tell BIWI on me)
D: turkey and goose stirfry (DH doesn't 'do' labelling things when he puts them into the freezer)

notamonkeysuncle · 06/05/2014 18:43

I'm craving choc, biscuits etc any suggestions of something that is within rules and will help these cravings?

StuntNun · 06/05/2014 18:47

Crunchy stuff is good for snacking Monkey: celery sticks or cucumber slices. I seem to remember a recipe for cheese crisps that just involved baking grated cheese.

FelixFelix · 06/05/2014 18:49

Stunt I'm desperate to try those cheese cracker things but can't justify using so much cheese at once!

If I'm craving choc etc I usually just have a coffee and it makes me feel 'full' but I know it has the opposite effect on some people.

notamonkeysuncle · 06/05/2014 18:57

Do you have a recipe for the cheesy crisps please?

SayraT · 06/05/2014 18:58

I stopped off at lidl on my way home and they were out of nearly everything I wanted...how many BCers live near me. No big tubs of ff yogurt, no orgasmic duck, no tuna with cherries, no celeriac, no courgettes, no aubergines Sad leave some for me next time!

notamonkeysuncle · 06/05/2014 18:59

Found it and off to make. will report back
