Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

brodyboo · 11/05/2014 09:15

Aargh am positively vomitous this morning :( Freezing cold and achy, this is carb flu I guess. Couldn't feel less like eating but have had some yog and coconut cream and boiling an egg to mash with salt and butter.
Few glasses of water already down.
B. Yog, coconut cream, mashed egg
L. Mackerel salad
D. Stuffed chicken, veg.
Also must go get some pork scratchings, had massive cravings since seen them mentioned.
Huge well done to everyone already seeing fab losses.
Flowers to BIWI for getting me started, despite feeling sick as a dog no urges to cheat yet, already feeling less bloated and just well lighter!

CQ also fab will power.
Pingu can you sip cooled boiled water for a bit to try and just settle your poor tums?

I've been wide awake and bushy tailed since 6 which is unheard of especially on a Sunday.
Syra thanks heaps for the spreadsheet of wonderment.

Big arse breakfast here I come.

StuntNun I was planning on ordering a proper salad but having scoured the menu it seems they only have the free side salad option now and don't offer anything more substantial so it will have to be lettuce, cucumber and cherry tomatoes for me. I will probably have something fatty to eat before we go if I'm feeling hungry but not too worried in that respect as I seem to have no appetite at the moment, have to remind myself to have lunch as I'm not usually hungry and would forget to eat.

Congrats to everyone seeing losses already, it was great to get on the scales at the end of the first week and see a decent loss and definitely helps with the motivation.

Hope everyone feeling unwell feels better soon

pingufan · 11/05/2014 09:36

Thanks guys just sticking to water at present, will have some eggs if I'm feeling up to it later. Roasted a huge piece of pork for today too...aw well..

DuckyMoDuckyMoMo · 11/05/2014 09:43

What's the veg we can eat? And the fruit after two weeks?

lookingforhope · 11/05/2014 10:04

Hi all

Been here since Tuesday but not posted yet cos it has taken me THIS LONG to find my laptop charger, so have been lurking on phone. Yes, housekeeping and order not my strong points, as you can see Blush. Not added weight to tracker either so going to check whether I can do that today, but started at 148lb which doesn't sound huge but as I am practically a midget at 5'0 it is not great and determined not to buy work trousers in a bigger size, so......

Muddling along, and think I am doing it right. Have one cup of tea with milk to kick start the morning then herbal teas and water all day with the odd black coffee if go to meet someone at Costa!

Eggs and ham with Mayo for breakfasts, meat or fish and salads with mayo for lunch, dinner is stir fry with allowed veg or home made soup, snacks are small amounts of cheese (LOVE cheese but trying to minimise portions), miso soup, celery with boursin or prawns or turkey slices. Does that sound OK? Also exercising when I can - did a killer HIIT class yesterday and stiff as a board today! But I always exercise and still put on a stone over the past year and a half.

Not weighed myself yet cos am doing the Neris and India version and they said not to weigh for a couple of weeks, but feeling a bit less bloaty. Am scared of the scales because find it so hard to lose (am 46, used to drop a stone easily in my 20's, grrrr Angry) and have been disappointed on other diets. Really want this to work or am heading off to be a fat old lady embarrassing my kids! Blush

Bit confused over the yoghurt issue - the rules say not to yoghurt but lots of you seem to be enjoying lovely yoghurt breakfasts - are you on bootcamp light or just old hands who know dairy doesn't stall them?

Also have two work dinner occasions coming up (next Thursday and the following Monday) and really don't want to go off track but they are set menus so no choice what I can have - anyone else in this situation?

Hope to join in more now I have laptop again - nice to 'meet' you all, impressed by the willpower shown on this page

And thanks to BIWI for doing this Grin Thanks

Redwhine · 11/05/2014 10:16

lookingforhope you just need to be careful about the type of yogurt. Full fat Greek with no flavouring (ie added sugar) is best, I think the lowest carb ones are Total and the Lidl own brand.

Redwhine · 11/05/2014 10:19

pingufan I found fizzy water more palatable than still last time I was sick. A boiled egg may be a good first food if you feel up to it. I know some people stay off dairy when sick, but I find a little yogurt okay after a bug. Hope you feel better soon. Just think about what a great weigh in you'll have tomorrow! Wink

monkeyfacegrace · 11/05/2014 10:40

So so tired today. Literally can't get going. Did have a, umm, good night with dh though so that may be why Blush

Am still bouncing around the 143lb mark. That's a 3lb loss since Monday and the lowest I've been for years, but I was 143lb before easter so I'm back to best. Still got 13lb to go. After the monumental fuck up Fri night I'm so on this woe it's untrue.

So far today I've had a cheese string and a pack of pork scratching while walking the puppy, and I've just had two good quality sausages (0.7g carbs each) and a fried egg. That seems a lot already but hunger will make my willpower waver.

About to crack onto my first litre of water.

Keeping on keeping on.

RoaringForties · 11/05/2014 10:48

monkey where's your veg? My fry up had some sliced mushrooms in a creamy buttery parsley sauce was yum.

Best1sWest · 11/05/2014 10:57

Bit down today as this is day 6 and scales show zilch weight loss. Well done to all those who have lost such fabulous amounts.

Scrabbled egg, small amount of halloumi, 5 cherry toms all fried in butter for breakfast.

monkeyfacegrace · 11/05/2014 10:58

Veg doesn't come into it until lunch. Mushrooms taste like spunk with the consistency of bogies so no chance are they coming near my breakfast Grin

I will have a bacon cesar salad for lunch, then roast broccoli and courgette with minced beef for tea.

costababe · 11/05/2014 11:16

Monkey
Love your mushroom descriptionGrin
My thoughts exactly!!

antimatter · 11/05/2014 11:22

few thoughts from me....
I've dabbled with low carbing in the past and can tell you what is stalling me - in case those who's weight is still not going down are looking for clues...
*cheese
*yoghurt (I never eat much of them anyway and don't ever have milk in my hot beverages so can't comment on it)
*artificial sweeteners
*a small glass ow red wine - stalled me twice for 2 days - not worth it IMHO
*cured meat such as bacon or ham
*cooked tomatoes

I think i am beginning to see some correlation between not drinking enough water and weight stalling

the AIP Paleo diet is based on low carb (same rules as this bootcamp) + no nighthades, seeds or nuts + medium to low protein, high fat and lots of vegetables

for those who are stalling already it is worth reading up about it

BIWI · 11/05/2014 11:32

OK - standby for a superpost!

pingufan

^Can I ask a question? Can you have too much veg?

Ive got roasting in the oven courgette, leek, mushrooms, cauliflower, half a red pepper and half a small red onion ready to go with my sirloin steak later.

Yes, you can have too much veg, because they all contain carbs!

The courgette, leek, mushrooms and cauliflower are all perfect low carb veg - although it obviously depends on how many grams of each you are having. Red pepper and red onion could actually be quite carby, so be careful with those. If you're concerned, try weighing next time and using the veg carb counter on the weight tracker

PeonyStick

It's usually in a small tetrapack carton - in Asda it would be in the World Foods aisle. I'm amazed that Asda wouldn't be selling it. Blue Dragon is most likely to be the brand on sale.

Minty/NeverHad - you need to look out for the Total brand of yoghurt. (Be careful, because there are three varieties - full fat, 2% and 0% fat and they look very similar) You will only find these in larger Tesco/Sainsbury's - if you go to a Tesco Express/Sainsbury Local they will only sell the low fat ones.

RedWhine the only issue for your friend is that it's a fair bit of processed stuff in one go. Better for you her to make your her own! I think Morrisons sell pig skin separately from the meat, so you can make your own lovely crackling to turn into scratchings.

readyforno2 why do you say you haven't done well? That day looks perfect!

HolgerDanske cubes of cheese are always a good snack - for next time!

SgtringBeanJean - Bootcamp Light allows some fruit (in the form of berries), nuts and seeds (in moderation) and alcohol (also in moderation). If Bootcamp suits you then no need to move on to Bootcamp Light - or you could do Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend

alleypalley no need to parboil cauliflower - just break it into florets, drizzle with olive oil and season, then chuck in the over for about 20 minutes till it starts to char

Minty always have a bottle of water/glass of water on your desk, and just sip at it all the time. It's only an extra 500ml that you need, so it should be easy to manage.

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice - apologies for my outpouring of frustration! It wasn't aimed just at you but was reflecting the amount of 'casual cheating' that has been going on and people talking about what they were/weren't doing and general failure to even bother to read the rules.

Everyone, ultimately, is here for themselves and will need to find a way to make low carbing work - if you're more experienced, then it's easier to find a strategy that is right. But from the outset, newbies need to be forced with a big stick encouraged to follow the rules.

lowcarbforthewin do you know how high in fat your yoghurt is?

Hissy I seem to remember that Worcestershire is quite high in carbs. However generally the amount used is pretty small, so I'd not worry too much about that.

BirdinaCage it's a very long time since I've been to Pizza Hut, but from memory, don't they have a 'help yourself' salad bar? If you make sure you have a really good breakfast that morning, you shouldn't be too hungry, and you could just navigate/negotiate the salad bar - avoiding, obviously, pasta salad, rice salad, potato salad, beetroot and sweetcorn Grin. The salad dressings are also likely to be full of sugar, so could you make your own and take that with you? (Remembering, of course, that balsamic vinegar is also verboten!)

IWillIfHeWill Flowers Fantastic!

petalsandstars you really, really, really don't want banana! Of all the fruits to cheat on, banana is probably the worst one! It's over 20g carbs per 100g. Don't do it!

CQ good going - that's really good as a basis for how you can navigate social situations in the future. And seeing the weight loss is the best reward for it.

StringBeanJean - really thirsty, if you're drinking plenty, means you're not eating enough salt. I know that seems counter-intuitive, but it's true. Try having a hot drink made with Oxo/Marmite/Bovril

DuckyMoDuckyMoMo Look at the Spreadsheet or go to to see the list of allowed veg After two weeks you can add in some berries - but only in moderation, and occasionally

lookingforhope welcome! Dairy isn't forbidden on Bootcamp - but the proviso is that it's pretty common for dairy to impede weight loss for quite a few people. Yoghurt, though, can often be better tolerated than cream or cheese.

Re your work meals, have you asked for the menu? Post them if you have, and let's see what we can advise. Also, presumably they have to cater for people with food issues? Surely you can have some input into the menus on that basis?

monkeyfacegrace so you don't like mushrooms then? Wink

Just beware that Cheesestrings/pork scratchings are processed ...

Other than that, your day sounds good.

FFS i just spent half an hour writing a SuperReply, including writing a list of people's weight loss and my fucking fucking ipad has just deleted the lot when I switched to another tab. I am Angry Angry

NeverHadANickname · 11/05/2014 11:45

I'm really trying to up the water and fat today. I had a couple of sausages for breakfast because I had some left over.

For dinner I've had in the oven since about 9 some shoulder pork that I cubed and fried in butter then added a couple of rounds of chorizo and some smoked paprika and a couple of tablespoons of chopped tomatoes. I also put the skin on the shelf above for crackling so that the fat would fall into the dent in the foil I put over the pork, I've then put the fat into the pork/paprika mix so now it looks like greasy tender cubes of deliciousness. It should be amazing (even if I do say so myself) by the time I start to feel hungry. Not sure about what veg I'll have with it, I'll see what I have in, maybe something to mash to catch and soak up all the grease. Is paprika ok? It's confusing me because its a powder.

For tea I'm doing roast pork shoulder with hollandaise and some veg or possibly a salad.

I'm getting nervous now the weigh in is tomorrow!

Hope everyone's having a good weekend.

NeverHadANickname · 11/05/2014 11:46

I've done that a couple of times crabby by pressing escape on my keyboard when a cat is trying to sit on my knee where the keyboard is! So frustrating.

SirNoel · 11/05/2014 11:47

Best you're not alone don't worry, my scales are actually showing a lb up so far Grin

Just keep on doing it, you'll start to see a downwards movement soon.

I've low carbed for quite a while, and sadly for me it's true that it does get harder to lose each subsequent time if I've come 'off' it for any length of time. That's why I personally would warn people off cheating Wink

Anyway, I knew this was gonna be tough, especially with the meds I'm on, so just plodding on with it

Have a good day all- Sunday yay! That means roast dinner Grin
