Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

I'feeling exhausted todayn but. Apart from a bit of a headache i'm fine, 6lbs down and only day 5. :)

B: bacon and scrambled eggs (is Worcestershire Sauce ok btw?)
L: chicken bacon, mozzarella and avocado salad
D: yummy marinated salmon, broccoli and cauliflower

I was worried about the water intake today, what with being out and about doing weekend lessons etc, but should have just about hit it by now.

rubybricks · 10/05/2014 22:31

evening all!

thanks sayra for adding me to the spreadsheet Flowers
just a quick post from me, thanks to those upthread who have cautioned strongly against deviation from the path - and to everyone who has shared their success stories on this WoE, it's so motivating.

i still consider pork scratchings a step too far, but there are so many other delicious things to choose from, and bootcamp is great for encouraging you to try out new foods/recipes. ImSoOverIt am really indebted to you for introducing me to coconut cream, it's fab! can i ask how you get around the 'use within 2 days' instruction? could i freeze it in ice cube trays?? although i'm eating it every day, there's still quite a bit in the carton... for those having difficulty finding it in store, i suggest going online and checking, i got mine in tesco.

not going to weigh again until monday, but the family are all onboard with me following the program and no one bats an eyelid any more at what i'm eating/not eating, thank goodness.

hope everyone having a good w/e

Birdinacage · 10/05/2014 22:59

Evening all, sorry if anything I wrote before was disheartening. Tbh I'm not sure if I said anything bad or not really as I haven't cheated much at all, maybe twice, in the 7/8 weeks so far and not at all for the first 4 weeks. I've been doing proper bootcamp since I began not bootcamp light but I did start when there was no cheese restriction and as dairy hasn't been an issue for me I really couldn't cope with no cheese at all!

I'm feeling a bit irritated about tomorrow, MIL and FIL are coming to visit and have decided that they want to go to pizza hut for lunch and having checked the menu there is absolutely sod all that is LC friendly (no surprise there). They know I'm doing LC and I did say when it was suggested that there was nothing suitable on the menu for me but everyone else wants to go there so I guess I will just be having a little salad Hmm. I know everyone will try to convince me to just have a day off and eat a ton of pizza and pudding but I really don't want to, it will taste yuck and make me feel awful. This actually has to be the first time I've ever tried to convince myself to eat pizza and warm cookies with ice cream and failed ShockGrin

anyway todays food:

B - peppermint tea
L - leftover soup from yesterday
T - courgetti fried in butter with mushrooms, tinned tomatoes and tuna and a little grated cheddar on top.

gillyginger · 10/05/2014 23:06

Evening all Smile
Feel like I have eaten alot today
B omelette with spn of mayo and small bpc
L celery and blue cheese soup
S few slices of cheewe
D prawn cocktail salad ( chicory leaves, half red pepper, courgette and dspring onion) and two chicken thighs
3 litres of water few cups of herbal tea, found a lovely one by pukka After Dinner Tea chicory fennel and cardomon, good substitute for dessert.

StuntNun · 11/05/2014 06:17

Birdinancage last time I went to Pizza Hut I had a chicken salad and it was fine. Or you could go to their salad bar and just choose the low carb stuff. Can you eat something before you go (this is where pork scratchings come in handy) so you won't be as hungry while you're at the restaurant?

Thumbwitch · 11/05/2014 06:22

I am just popping in to apologise for not being here for the last week - I have no idea what happened in my head but it was in completely the wrong place to do Boot Camp, so I'm starting tomorrow instead. I've been shocking this last week and am too Blush to tell you how bad, so I'll just say - see you tomorrow and hopefully I'll be on the wagon properly then.

IWillIfHeWill · 11/05/2014 06:51

Erm... not sure how to deal with this one.

Got on the scales this morning. Same scales, same position, same time of day, best of three....experienced 'dieter' here, forty-plus years of starvations/weigh-ins/self-loathing etc so I know how to weigh myself. and I know that weight can fluctuate. And I have a lot to lose, which means that the first week of a diet/WOE is usually encouraging. Also I haven't done 'low carb' as such before, so its a surprise to my body.

I started on Monday so not a full week until tomorrow. According to the scales to day, since Monday I've lost...

                           E L E V E N P O U N D S !

Yesterday, it was only seven. So I'm wary. But jubilant. Quietly jubilant.

Bring me more fat and another half gallon of water!!!

petalsandstars · 11/05/2014 07:03

Need to go shopping- eyeing up the kids fruit :-(

petalsandstars · 11/05/2014 07:04

I don't want banana
I don't want banana
I don't want banana

CQ · 11/05/2014 07:08

Wow, IWill, that's fantastic!! Good to be cautious but it's a great start.

Well I am so proud to report that I stuck to the rules all day yesterday despite having DDs birthday party. There were sandwiches, scones, crisps, fruit juice, chocolate-dipped strawberries and cakes. Not ONE morsel passed my lips.

I snacked on cheese and ham while making the sarnies and even managed to cut the crusts off and bin them - usually those babies would have been Mummy 's little treat Grin

And while my sister had a glass of wine I had herbal tea.

I really needed wine about 10 pm when the sleepover hysteria was getting too much but I held fast.

I have lost 5 lbs in 6 days and it's this immediate and significant result that's keeping me on track.

Thanks BIWI GrinGrin

IWillIfHeWill · 11/05/2014 07:17

Lots of willpower going on there, CQ, well done!

lowcarbforthewin · 11/05/2014 07:32

lowcarbforthewin · 11/05/2014 07:33

And well done to you CQ, that is some first class willpower being shown there.

PeonyStick · 11/05/2014 07:48

Iwill Grin Thanks well done - it is amazing this woe . You might slow up a bit next week - but what an amazing start.

CQ wow ! I think you have passed the biggest test . I always fail the children's party test - it's a killer !

Well done to all you losers Grin
Resisting the temptation to weigh in until tomorrow, but I love the no bloated feeling from LC
Clothes feel looser, so hoping for a good result tomorrow.
Haven't posted food for a day or two, but no cheats, possibly not enough veg.
Yesterday
B FF yoghurt
L tuna mayo and salad
D chicken wrapped in bacon and asparagus
Water water and more water.

Redwhine · 11/05/2014 08:15

Hello! Was out for dinner last night, my lovely friend knew I was LCing, she made squid and chorizo salad, followed by stuffed aubergine. To be honest, the aubergine probably was a bit carby, as there were a lot of onions and tomatoes in it. But after she'd gone to so much trouble I was not going to start picking out slivers of onion and chunks of tomatoe. Did not have pudding.
Today:
B egg in a cup
L Mackeral pâté and salad leaves
D Tikka marinated cod, served with cauliflower curry, and rice for everyone else.
Lots of water. Going to try not to snack today, as I don't really think I am snacking for hunger, more habit. If I feel hungry, may have a small bowl of Greek yogurt.
pingu snigger at pork scratchings/ love life metaphor!
Feeling very motivated by weigh in tomorrow!

StringBeanJean · 11/05/2014 08:20

Morning all.

Hi Thumbwitch! Good luck for your first few days of BC, there's so much support on this thread, it's ace.

Iwill - that is amazing!

CQ - that is some willpower! I find party food so tempting, don't know if I could have stayed strong.

Hmm, I'm not feeling so good today. Couldn't manage supper last night, felt sick and weak. Still the same this morning, urgh, can't face food. Surely I've already done carb flu?

I'm going to weigh-in later as am off to my mum's (don't have scales so this is my only chance). Wish me luck!
