Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

Sorry BIWI, was being lazy this morning Smile

B. leftover chicken owlet omlet with chilly oil - also had half bag salad & mayo.
L. fish with mushrooms and spinach.
D. some other Red protein, with bag of salad (having problems with greasy mouth feeling)

Also. Thank you all, Especially BIWI. this is really working for me but its nothing I would have ever done on my own.
Little trick if your thinking of cheating, punish yourself - 10 pushups / sit-ups / call mother in law / mow lawn / watch top gear. it will soon stop you.

ForeskinHyena · 10/05/2014 11:36

Feeling suitably chastised. Blush

I'm going to hide the cheaty LC snack bars away for a few weeks and crack on with this properly. Tbh when dp grabs a snack bar straight after a delicious LC dinner I do judge a bit and think 'that's just habit, you don't really need anything else' but he can't kick the sweet craving. The fact that I CAN resist means I really should.

I work at home so I should be able to find time to plan, shop and cook for everything I need to do it strictly instead of resorting to the quick grab-on-the-go option.

Forgive me biwi for my sins and I promise to do better!

Salmon with courgettes, mushrooms cooked in butter with mayo for breakfast. Seemed really odd having that for breakfast but actually very tasty and satisfying!

Plan to try a BPC later

Hello all. Yesterday was a bit of a drama, I stuck to my eating, all fine through lunch, picked DS up from his taekwondo after school, packed the car and grabbed the dog and headed to my parents' - 3 hours away in central Virginia, so I knew I would be there in time for dinner, all fine.

But only 30 mins in, a stupid woman hits my car from behind, not seriously, but then refuses to give me her insurance details and insists we call the police. So we were stuck by the side of the road in the heat for over an hour, I then was gnarled up in rush hour traffic, and we were all starving. Thank god for the US obsession with health - when we stopped to get DS his Macdonald's, I found a P3 pack - 3 small servings of protein in a snack pack, with no carbs - and some pork rinds and two more bottles of water.

When I got to Mom & Dad's, she had cooked baked salmon with baked veg, asparagus and salad. I was spoilt. Yummy! And I stuck to just water - no wine for me!

Today, plan is:

B: scrambled egg and bacon and veg
L: chicken salad for lunch
D: everybody else is having sushi for our Mother's Day family dinner, so I may have sashimi and salad, or some baked fish

I Am a little worried, cause I am feeling hungry right now - 7am - which has not happened all week. So I will need to be careful. My body is finally getting used to my new meds for my diabetes and my stomach is settling, which is good.

Anyway, have a great LC day! Gosh, I am staring to sound very American, it is obviously rubbing off.

lowcarbforthewin · 10/05/2014 12:16

I just went to my local green grocers, it was such a treat. I bought duck eggs (manna from heaven, so good), asparagus, aubergine, lovely little tomatoes and a box of overripe mangoes which I have blended with some FF yogurt and cream and is now sitting in my freezer ready to eat in a couple of weeks time.

Had a duck egg omelette for lunch with a salad and breakfast was Greek yogurt and coconut cream. Supper will be steak and asparagus.

Feasting here!!

pingufan · 10/05/2014 12:24

Luscious lunch!

Yesterday's leftover buttered chicken cold cut into slices inside two large romaine lettuce leaves with a spread of the aldi venison pate inside and some mayo.

Feeling stuffed!

Redwhine · 10/05/2014 12:28

pingufan I ordered an eight pack from amazon, it was £7.95, but the bags are big... You'd have to be a big piggy to do one bag in a sitting (like I just did Blush) and I'm planning to save them for special treat snacking... Like on a Friday night when DH is mainlining crisps!

I'm also planning some Parmesan crisps for snacks... Easy, delicious, but a strong flavour so you don't tend to eat too many.

Thanks for all the tough talking! I know I have been overdoing cheese, need to think up more snacks that aren't cheese based. I don't like olives. Any other ideas? Boiled eggs are good, but I tend to have a egg based meal so don't want to overdo the eggs....

alleypalley · 10/05/2014 12:31

Dh has taken the dd's to the cinema this morning so I had a lovely lie-in. I got up to go for a wee at about 8am, had a glass of water and went back to bed. Then when I woke up again I had a massive headache, maybe I had too much sleep.

B- mushroom and haloumi omelette
L- tuna mayo lettuce boats with courgette fried in butter
D- steak with veg

I glad all the cheating had been brought up. I'm not taking much notice for now, but I have over 3 stone to lose and if I find my weight loss slow or starting to stall and those that are cheating are having great results I know I will find it frustrating and disheartening.

Off to work now. Hope everyone has a good day.

ElmaFudd · 10/05/2014 12:32

Quick hello - this thread is moving so quickly! Took a sneaky peek as am flying out to US tomorrow for a week long conference so won't have scales on Monday. Anyway, delighted to report that I'm 3lbs down, and also fitted into a next-size-down pair of jeans that had been eluding me for months!

I've been faffing around for months, and suspect that a couple of decades of disordered eating and stupid dieting (if it's a classic mistake, I've made it!) meant my insulin resistance was high. Before I started this last summer, I had spotted a couple of red flags. So part of me thinks that the faffing and consequent sllooooowwwww weight loss was maybe part of a process necessary to get my body used to receiving a lot less sugar. And to be clear, by faffing I mean eating too much dark chocolate, drinking wine on school nights, pigging out on nuts..all of which kept me low carb but didn't do much for weight loss.

Any...point of all this rambling is to show that by knuckling down for a week I got a very satisfactory whoosh, and the clothes are telling their own story!

Off out for a walk. Last point - put on my raincoat and thought for a moment that I'd put on my husband's (same colour) as it felt baggier :-)

Wish me luck for next week - US conference hotels are a carby twat's wet dream!!

pingufan · 10/05/2014 12:46

Thank s guys am definitely ordering the salt and vinegar ones! X

NeverHadANickname · 10/05/2014 12:53

B - FF yoghurt with a little bit of cream and coconut cream
S - Olives and pork scratchings which are good and salty so make me drink more!
D - Aubergine and tomato bake with a slice of haloumi fried in butter
T - I think sausages with a couple of fried eggs and a salad

starsand petals have you tried coconut oil too? I cook with it & put it in tea. I heard it speeds up metabolism (?) and a spoonful melts in the mouth exquisitely.

pingufan · 10/05/2014 13:05

Which coconut oil do you buy? Where from? Ridiculous question but does it taste very coconutty?

Suzymoo09 · 10/05/2014 13:08

Crabby Thanks Shock Quite right too.

Valdeeves · 10/05/2014 13:14

I'm in!! Looking to lose a bit before the summer starts.
*waves hello

Redwhine · 10/05/2014 13:18

Hello!

Just had ham and cheese omlette with salad for me and beans and toast for the rest of family. Really enjoyed it and was not tempted by cake they had afterwards.... Getting there.

May be a coincidence but just noticed my skin feels nicer, is that possible in less than a week? Some dry patches on my face have gone....

CrabbyBlossomBottom · 10/05/2014 13:21

Minty I always swore blind that I couldn't quite give up sugar in tea and coffee, in fact I remember a glancing blow from BIWI's big stick on my first bootcamp when I insisted that I'd got it down to a third of a tsp of sugar substitute but couldn't cut it out completely. Grin Well I did, and got used to the taste very quickly, to the extent that even during my twattiest carby twat moments in the last six months, it never even occurred to me to go back to putting sugar in my tea. Why would I when my tea tastes fine? Wink

The BPC with butter is absolutely gorgeous - not greasy just rich and foamy. You absolutely have to use unsalted butter though, and the better the quality of the coffee and butter, the nicer it will be. Haven't tried using coconut oil so can't speak for that. It doesn't appeal to me tbh.

Gilly that's exactly what I did. The trouble is, the carby twattishness did not make me feel good. Although I did enjoy the fruit scones... Blush Most of the carby 'treats' are actually somewhat of a letdown and don't live up to the hype in your mind, I find.

Come on chuck, you can do it! Grin

spamm well done on keeping the faith in trying circumstances!

Elma that's inspiring, hope you can keep a lid on the carbs next week. Have a good time.

Suzy Grin it felt good - like I'm a proper bootcamp sergeant-major bawling at you all on the parade ground. Grin Now I have to start walking my talk, I suppose, don't I!

Ooh look I've done a little SuperReply, haven't had the energy for that for ages. DP is like this Hmm though because I've wasted the whole morning on MN. Blush

Right, to keep me on track and possibly give others some ideas, here is my meal plan for the next week...

Tonight - Seafood pasta with courgetti instead of pasta. That'll be salmon, scallops and prawns cooked on the griddle, with a sauce of shallot, garlic, white wine, cream and fennel.

Tomorrow - Pork belly slow roasted on a bed of fennel, with swede mash and roasted broccoli.

Monday - Cochin lamb curry; slow cooked lamb shanks in a divinely spiced sauce. Served with spiced cauliflower and a mushroom/spinach/cream dish. All recipes here but would have to omit the nuts for bootcamp.

Tuesday - leftover pork belly with mushrooms and fennel in a creamy garlicky shalloty sauce, over mashed swede. With some asparagus too, maybe, as it's in season.

Wednesday - leftover lamb curry, with the same side dishes.

Thursday - smoked mackerel with griddled asparagus and swede mash.

Friday - I reckon I'll have to try that Orgasmic Duck, since my idea seems to have won Peony over! Grin I'll photograph it and put it on the blog if I can be arsed.

Saturday - steak in a sherry mushroom sauce with roasted celeriac mash and roasted broccoli.

Lunches for the next few days will involve the bloody amazing chicken that DP made last night. He was desperate to do his first BBQ of the year, bless him, so I requested the chook as it's my fave... Spatchcocked (so it cooks evenly) chicken cooked on the kettle BBQ with the lid on and a bunch of rosemary underneath. It ends up gently charred and sort of smoked, infused with the scent of rosemary. Had with bbqd baby tomatoes and new season's asparagus, with homemade hollandaise sauce which didn't thicken because I rushed it in my ravenous enthusiasm but still tasted lush poured all over everything. Will be eating the leftovers for the next couple of days.

NeverHadANickname · 10/05/2014 13:43

Hollandaise sauce! crabby I think I love you! I saw Nigella do a really easy one this morning (on the telly, I don't actually know her) and something like that is right up my street! Why didn't I think of this earlier? It can just be eggs and loads of butter and a bit of white wine vinegar.

Notsoskinnyminny · 10/05/2014 13:54

Well said Crabby I started the last BC with a stone to lose - not much but I'm only tiny. I'd LC'd years ago so know it works for me but got bored eating my usual meals without spuds/pasta and put the weight back on so this time I invested in a couple of LC cookbooks and my slow cooker became my best friend.

I tried veg I'm ashamed to say I've got to my ripe old age and never eaten, bought different cuts of meat etc. I used to be the queen of jars but now cook from scratch and the pataks and dolmios have been replaced with herbs and spices. The kitchen might look like a bombsite but the end results are worth it. Greek yoghurt is my snack of choice now I hated any yoghurt before BC and once I got over my fear of a BPC now made with 15g coconut oil and 10g butter, its the perfect pickmeup when you're on the verge of raiding the biscuit tin, I can't see myself ever drinking a sweet milky latte again.

I lost half a stone and 16" but put 4lbs back on through being a carbytwat. I didn't put on as many inches but the belly wobble and cellulite were back and the boobs went back to a FF. After the 2 wk booze ban I'd have a bit (1" max) of wine and drown it in soda but after BC the ratios started to slip until I was back to glugging best part of a bottle a night it was school hols half a hotcross bun turned into 2 with a couple of shortbreads on the side - you get the picture. My fat dog walking pants that'd been hanging off me were snug again by the time I went back to school.

So I've lassooed my efalump, my meals for next week have been planned, I've bought a couple of smaller plates because I know I was eating far too much last BC and fingers crossed by the end of this BC I'll have finally lost the stone I've gained since moving in with now-DH.

If you're going to do BC you have to stick to the rules. You're replacing carbs with fat and once you allow carbs to creep in you'll undo all your hardwork as your body with hold onto the fat longer because it'll be expecting them.

Lecture over must go and wash the curls away after getting soaked walking psychopup.

Forgot to say Crabby's Kashmiri chicken and cauli cheese are to die for but go easy on the CC as its very moreish and addictive Grin and in 2 wks you can try her berry crumble.

antimatter · 10/05/2014 14:25

7 pounds loss in the last 9 days!
that includes bg carb meal on Sunday at in-laws.

B: scrambled eggs on butter

L: most amazing "soup" I made in few min.
I have some choicken breast marinating in vinegar and olive oil.I melted a tbsp of butter and a tbsp of lard and cooked chopped chb in it.
I had a cup of leftover of stewed cabbage with onion and courgettes.
Mixer it all together and added a tbsp of double cream.
Most delicious food ever!
Who said this WOE is boring Grin

D: undecided

pingufan · 10/05/2014 14:30

A kind of big Mac?

Mince beef made into patties with an egg white and a teeny bit of finely chopped onion on a bed of lettuce with mayo and small amount of passata mixed together for the big Mac sauce, add some sliced gherkin and I would say that was fairly close....

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 10/05/2014 14:48

Come and let me share my wonderously expensive shopping.
Did an alditescosainsbo extravaganza.
Aldi, got the creamy coleslaw, some thick pork chops, bresaola and a huge packet of Westphalian air dried ham and mini mozzarella. (Sure I got the individual Greek yogurts, but I can't find them)
Tesco, the twinings caramel and gingerbread teas.almond milk ( the fresh alpro is less carby than the blue diamond)
But my big discovery is Maile mayo with mustard. Much cheaper than the de Louis, bigger jar and only 1.6 per 100 g!
Breakfast was cabbage fried in butter with bacon, coffee and cream.
Lunch was a big bowl of little gem and pea shoots with bresaola, mozzarella and posh olive oil and a cup of salted caramel tea.
Dinner is going to be boiled eggs and asparagus. With hollandaise for me ( and crusty bread for dd)
I don't feel at all hungry,I've got no suger cravings, the carb flu has worn off. I haven't lost an ounce, but my clothes feel looser.
Oh got coconut oil ( but I'm a bit scared, does it taste cocunutty?)
