Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

I'm totally new to this, i tried it a few months back but got to day 3 and caved. This time i'm fully on track, losing weight and enjoying this WOE and the support of this thread is invaluable.
I had such a huge sugar addiction and i'm slowly cracking it. Still craving but just drinking water when i do! I've been avoiding supermarkets this week, even went to just a fruit/veg stall for veg instead of Morrison!
I have a 7 months old and i want to set him a good example and be a mum who can run around after him and not be slowed down by my weight.
Hopefully people will stop posting about their cheats after it's been mentioned, it's a little disheartening to read about it but i'm determined to get through this 2 weeks and then decided whether to continue on BC or go to BC lite.
Thanks to BIWI, your advise is great and even though i haven't asked any questions, they've all been answered!!

notso · 10/05/2014 09:27

Grin at bookcase.

My Mum has unhelpfully brought two loaves of her homemade bread and 6 homemade scones, they smell delicious.

Not sure what to have for breakfast yet, or lunch or tea for that matter. DC want pizza which is the stock answer when asked what they want for tea.

Parsnipcake · 10/05/2014 09:28

fandance what happens is water fills up the gay cells for a few days/ couple of weeks, then your body lets it go all at once. We call it a Whoosh! Just stick with it and you will have a good day on the scales soon :)

Parsnipcake · 10/05/2014 09:29

Fat not gay. Bloody autocorrect.

ImSoOverIt · 10/05/2014 09:30

Well BIWI, you would be proud of me, I went down for breakfast and there were even fresh pastries straight out of the oven ! Confused However... I managed to find a block of goats cheese in the fridge so I had a few slices of that and some grated cheddar, with some very strong coffee! Not ideal I know, but better than the carbfest that was on offer.

Hopefully that should keep the hunger at bay til I can be a carbinator at the wedding breakfast!

I am very sorry for cheating a little bit, but I am not going off piste just cos I feel like it - I am trying to make the best of a carby situation! Grin

outtolunchagain · 10/05/2014 09:40

Afraid I went. Little off piste last night too as we went out for dinner with friends for my birthday .Managed starter OK , had asparagus with pancetta , main course was herb crusted cod on bed of new potatoes, afraid I caved and ate the potatoes Hmm, and I did have a glass of wine and a glass of champagne , on the good side though I resisted pudding and had a peppermint tea insteadSmile

Back to business this morning with a lovely boiled egg courtesy of Edna my Welsummer!

Redwhine · 10/05/2014 09:41

My posh pork scratchings have arrived!

B Greek yogurt
S pork scratchings
L cheese and ham omlette with salad leave
D Not sure... Going out but will be good!

FelixFelix · 10/05/2014 09:43

I'm at my mums for the weekend with DD as DP has gone to the lakes for a couple of nights. Forgot to tell her I am LC and she didn't have anything in I could eat yesterday morning. I was meant to go to the shop on the way down but I got here late! So I had a couple of coffees and didn't eat anything until late-ish (2 babybells Grin) then she made me a chicken stir fry for tea. We went out shopping and I resisted afternoon tea and everything!! I'm trying to talk her round to trying LC as she keeps complaining about needing to lose weight but then not doing anything about it. Will keep chipping away at her for the rest of the weekend Grin

Fandancelil - you are experiencing the Week 3 (sometimes 4 and/or 5) Pause!

It's very, very common.

If you think about it, you have lost a lot of weight - bloody well done, by the way! - and your body isn't going to carry on losing at that rate. What you've lost is some water, a little bit of fat and the glycogen you had stored in your muscles/liver. Now your body is shifting over to burning fat.

I don't know why there's a hiatus, but it's almost as if your body just has to take stock of what's happening, make sure you're doing what you're doing, and then start to get on with it again Grin

Just keep on keeping on, and the weight loss will start again. But note that it will be at a slower rate. Which is good - long and slow weight loss is much more sustainable in the longer term.

Hi bootcampers, how are we all today?

I survived my all-you-can-eat buffet brunch yesterday! I just ate loads of meat and some salad. The only times I went wrong were perhaps a little too much (raw) carrot in the salad and I also ate some chicken wings which were coated in something sweet and sticky, but I think I did pretty well considering booze was included and I passed on all the champagne and gorgeous looking cocktails. And I also managed to avoid the dessert station, but by god that nearly killed me. Confused

Feeling quite good today and managed to survive a supermarket trip to stock up on cabbage, Greek yoghurt and cream. I also got some coconut cream, but there are no legal requirements for food labels here in the Middle East, so I have nooooo idea what the carb content is....hopefully it is OK though. I think the ingredients said something like 'Coconut solids, 70%, water'

I am really enjoying this WOE and have no longing for carbs at all, despite DH making fresh bread every morning in our new breadmaker and other such lovely temptations!

I love eggs and meat and feel like my body is breathing a sigh of relief as if to say, 'This is how I've been trying to get you to eat for the last 30 years!'

Pisseslikeahorse · 10/05/2014 10:27

(formally Artibartfast) Yes i've taken my spirit name. Thanks to Obi-Wan PeonyStick Grin, also being up loads of times last night it never seems to stop Eurgh!!! so i'm just excepting the truth

Today is a good day, morning run was rubbish but I feel allot better, no headache yet.
B. leftover chicken owlet with chilly oil
L. fish
D. some other protein (not very inspiring is it) . Im still stuffing my face and todays targets are treats of coconut cream and pork scratchings.

CrabbyBlossomBottom · 10/05/2014 10:29

Bloody well done on breakfast, Imso. A lump of cheese is my go-to when I haven't got time/appetite for breakfast and know I should eat something. I have it with a few little cherry/pomodorino tomatoes - 3.2% carbs so ok in moderation. Easy to take cheese and toms on a trip, too. Enjoy the wedding.

Right you lot, listen up... I've got a few things to say, and I doubt it'll make me popular but yous lot have got BIWI at the end of her tether already and it's only bloody week one! Without BIWI we wouldn't have this fantastic and supportive resource, so I'm fully prepared to be her heavy enforcer if necessary.

If you're going to commit to Bootcamp, then commit. Properly. Especially for the first two weeks. No excuses, no pieces of fruit here and there, or toast for breakfast, or a a chocolate bar because you couldn't resist. No Fucking Cheating! And if you must cheat, keep it to yourself on this thread because it's not fair on the ones who are sticking faithfully to the rules and get discouraged by seeing cheaters still losing weight whilst they do everything right and lose slowly/not at all for a few weeks.

Only you can do this. No one can lose the weight for you. Bootcamp works, we can promise you that, but you have to stop making excuses and just commit yourself utterly to it. It is a very unforgiving way of eating to start with, while your body adapts: it's very very simple: if you cheat, it won't work and you have sabotaged yourself. There is bags of support, ideas, inspiration and a kick up the bum here when you need it, but you have to do your bit.

The first two weeks, as have been said many times now, are called bootcamp for a reason - it's really fucking hard. Having done it a few times now, I can promise you that it does work, and by the end of the fortnight, being allowed berries and nuts and dark chocolate will seem like biggest luxury you can imagine. Especially when made into a crumble and smothered in clotted cream. Wink The point of the first two weeks is to reset your taste buds and I promise you, it really does work - stuff that you used to hoover up will taste cloyingly sweet to you.

If you are serious about losing weight, get serious about Bootcamp. The whole thing is 10 weeks out of your life. JUST TEN WEEKS!! If you hated every second of it and think that low carb is a load of bollocks, you can dive face first into a vat of carbs and low fat sludge at the end, in the sure certainty that you gave it your best effort and it's not for you. But first you have to give it your best effort, and that means following the rules - BIWI didn't just make them up from her fertile imagination, they are there for good research-based reasons and based on a lot of experience running these bootcamps. I'd love to see the total amount of weight lost by people over the last couple of years - can we have some old timers posting their overall losses? I'll start with 24lbs last summer.

I know that it's really hard to stick to this when you have social engagements or other people are cooking for you. Sometimes it's unavoidable, but most of the time you can explain, adapt, or, shock horror! not go out to eat/to that social engagement/eat out of politeness etc. It's only for a few fucking weeks of your life!!!!

Are you getting fed up with me yet? Grin

One last word. Planning. Planning. Planning. Not planning is the devastating enemy of low carb eating.

= Plan your meals and make sure you have the ingredients in. When you're hungry and tired it's too easy to think 'oh fuck it I'll just have pasta'.
= Batch cooking at the weekends is a really good plan, as is using a slow cooker. Having a meal in the fridge/freezer when you're knackered and can't be fucked with it all, will save your low carb arse.
= Do not assume that there will be a low carb option at work lunches/train stations/buffets. There won't. I've seen this catch people out so many times. Take a packed lunch/emergency snack.
= Don't let yourself get hungry. Personally, all of my willpowers exits stage left once I'm hungry, and I make poor choices. Especially about wine. Blush

I'm not even doing bootcamp proper at the moment. Grin I've been in a dark place of panic and carby twattishness lately, and couldn't summon the energy and willpower to commit to this like I know you have to for it to work. So I'm bootcamping light with you all until I've got my strength back. I've only got a bit to lose now really, so feeling healthy (in mind as well as body) is the most important thing for me. After a few days of BC light, I'm feeling better than I have done in weeks. I'm not posting my food here as I'm still mainlining CrabbyCrumbleâ„¢ in order to coax my Inner Gobbler on board.

Stick with it, it really does get easier, I promise. Wink

lowcarbforthewin · 10/05/2014 10:29

To people cheating as well, once you are over carb flu, this actually gets easier the less you cheat. Every time you have sugar, you increase your cravings. I've been doing this woe for months and I'm really only grasping that now.

I've been going through all my food diaries and if I've eaten dark chocolate or had some wine, I eat much more things like nuts and chocolate and fruit the next day.

Keep upping your fat, keep plugging away and the cravings lessen hugely and you start reaping all the benefits of this. Being much stricter is hard at first, but it then makes things easy.

lowcarbforthewin · 10/05/2014 10:32

And yes, I will echo Crabby, PLANNING IS EVERYTHING.

Plan snacks for when you're out, plan the most delicious meals you can so that you are looking forward to what you're eating. Make this as easy as possible for yourself.

BIWI · 10/05/2014 10:33

Grin @ Crabby!!! But thank you.

Pisseslikeahorse Where is your veg/salad?! That isn't a Bootcamp day you've outlined there. You must eat some carbs, and they should be coming from vegetables and salad.

OP posts:
CrabbyBlossomBottom · 10/05/2014 10:39

Oh and btw, not cheating is vital in the first two weeks to kick-start/reset your metabolism, but generally in later weeks people have the odd planned 'off-piste moments' - planned deviations for special occasions. You accept that you might not lose any weight that week and that's fine. But please not at the beginning... you're just sabotaging yourself if you do.

Following on from Crabby's post I started Bootcamp last June and lost 30 lb over five months to get to my target weight of 9.5 stone. Apart from a five pound gain over Christmas that I lost in the January Bootcamp I have been able to maintain my weight loss by sticking with Bootcamp Light. I don't know about other people but eventually I reached the point where cakes, pastries, etc. don't even seem like food any more, they don't register on my 'want to eat' radar. Before I went low carb I was practically mainlining chocolate fudge cake so it just goes to show that sugar is an addiction that can be broken.

outtolunchagain · 10/05/2014 10:53

Agree planing is the key , difficult when people turn up to take you out for surprise dinner though Shock

Planing dinner tonight now , need inspiration , off to browse the recipe threads

pingufan · 10/05/2014 11:01

Still standing strong here - 7 weeks and a bit into low carb (but only 3 days on the high fat woe (don't ask - I was on the terriann 123 plan first) and another 1/2lb down this morning. On the TA123 plan I'd stuck for nearly 2 weeks then stumbled across this thread and after being a bit scared, introduced the fats and ditched the low fat / sweetend items that were allowed on the TA123.

So a total of 1st 3lb off now in 7 weeks!

Did I see a mention of pork scratchings? Please tell me more!! Where can I get them? thats the only thing I miss - something salty and crunchy like crisps

PeonyStick · 10/05/2014 11:06

Just to say I can highly highly recommend the orgasmic duck a la crabby ( a few pages back)
Its gourmet...... its earth shuddering and you try not to chew it so it can stay in your mouth longer...... notjoking

to Arti , not sure now if I should cll you pissy orhorsey, but I love it. love it...... and the whoosh fairy will surely reward you Grin

Day 2 of BPC for me - breakfast this time...... for any of you who haven't yet gone there..... just try it once.......

I feel bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning - my skin is improving and my jeans are super comfy instead of that ' just a bit too tight' feeling.

Parsnipcake · 10/05/2014 11:08

Pork scratchings come in posh varieties now. I like the mustard ones from ocado. I miss ketchup but I find a splash of malt vinegar mixed with aldi passata works as a substitute.

Couldn't agree with you more crabby you can not cheat at all, last year at beginning of bootcamp weight was coming if slowly, found that if I cut down on cheese and dairy it helped and drinking loads and loads of water,
anyway by the time bootcamp finished I had lost 21lbs and managed to maintain till Xmas, when unfortunately I had a f*!k it attitude and started becoming a carby twat again.
Tried loads of times to get back on wagon, but know will find it easier this time doing it with you all on bootcamp.Already feel much more motivated reading all posts.
But personally every time I have committed to this way of eating I have always lost the weight
