Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

Man today's been a long day. I avoided the chocs at work, I've just finished and I'm very wine thirsty now, but I shan't. I'll be strong and go to bed instead.

CrabbyBlossomBottom · 10/05/2014 00:07

Blimey, this thread is moving so fast! I need to get on the case and do a SuperReplyâ„¢ but I thought 'oh I'll just have a skim through and reply to a few things' - of course have forgotten what I wanted to say now.

Notso, have you overdone it with the garlic prawns? Grin

Sayra you're our Spreadsheet Star. Flowers

I am just about managing the food OK (seriously, no sugar during the week DD really hits the Terrible Twos?) but my God the lack of fruit is a major issue. I usually eat loads of it!

Finding the carb flu isn't as bad this time around though. Is it generally easier if you've done it before? I am making sure to eat quite a bit of salt though, which helps I think.

Ok so 1st night of the wedding weekender - I think I have done ok considering. I have had 2 single vodka sodas and 3 small glasses of dry white wine. In between every drink I had a large glass of water. The meal was bangers and mash with peas and sweetcorn! Confused

BUT I did only have the sausages and manage to scrounge a couple more, so I only ate 4 Linda McCartney sausages. I completely rejected the pudding of sticky toffee crumble. And later on I had a packet of peanuts.

Please don't hit me too hard with you stick BIWI. I tried really hard to cling on to the wagon, and I would have stayed on it completely had I not had this wedding. I will continue to try my best tomorrow, and will be back on it with bells on come Monday. Wink

ImSoOverIt · 10/05/2014 00:41

Don't mean to brag but it was me who discovered the coconut cream Wink.

IWillIfHeWill · 10/05/2014 06:13

Morning! Feeling good. Another easy wake-up, no pain, no dog-in-the-mouth, and....weightloss! Making 7lb since Monday.
Oh happy day! O happy day! When bootcamp washed...some of my fat away! Oh happy day!
Needless to say, I'm sticking with the plan for now Grin

jumpinghoops · 10/05/2014 06:30

Morning all, I've been reading everyone's updates but barely ever time to post. I must try and pick up some Coconut Cream today, sounds delicious! Love the sound of the aubergine/mince recipe too and think I might have that for my dinner tonight.

I'm on Day 8 and I think the fog is just starting to lift, getting up at 5.30 this morning with my little one hasn't felt like such a wrench. Just weighed myself and I'm 6 pounds down too which is great. Generally finding it all OK but have been snacking a bit on cheese/olives in between meals and so not strictly sticking to 3 meals a day. Guess that's my target for next week.

BIWI · 10/05/2014 07:00

ImSoOverIt - sounds like you negotiated it as well as you could! Grin

IWillIfHeWill - 7lbs is fantastic - and it's still not a full week! And jumpinghoops doing brilliantly as well Flowers for both of you

Nothing still. Nada, nyet, zilch.
Went for dinner at uber cook friends. Bless her she tried really hard and food was amazing.
Starter-blanched broccoli, then marinaded in ff yog with rashoul hanout then grilled.
Main. Two curries. King prawns, spinach and paneer cooked in butter and cream. Drool.
Dodged the rice.
Unfortunately the other curry was chick peas with paneer. I had a spoonful. Shame.
Pudding (yes I did, more shame) was poached pear with cream.
I took fizzy water and drank that not the tiny glass of red, oh no
Fucked off as planned big sainsbos/tesco/aldi/lidl shop today and dh has nicked off bird watching miles away with car, so was going on bus, but it's pissing down. This means I have to do housework, people. Angry

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 10/05/2014 07:04

Oh can some post link to ssheet? I looked, honest.

Redwhine · 10/05/2014 07:11

Sayra T (or anyone feeling kind!) could you please add me to the spreadsheet. I can't seem to do it, maybe because I'm on an ipad? Starting weight 100 if that's okay. Thanks so much for doing the spreadsheet.

This is the first time I've used the spreadsheet and posted on a boot amp thread. I really want to do it properly this time!

Yesterday was a bit odd.... I was really good in terms of food. I was supposed to be going to my friend's house in the evening for food, but in the end we went to the pub. before we went I had two eggs in a cup with butter and ham. Lovely. I know I shouldn't have drunk at the pub, but I only had two drinks, dry prosecco. I went home after a lovely two hour catch up, still sober and feeling quite smug....

But I was hungry so at about ten I had ham rolled up around slivers of butter and mustard Blush.

So I felt the day went well in some ways, no cheating. But I did drink, and eat too much cheese... Think my report reads 'could do better!'

Look chaps ....
This is 'bootcamp' . biwi has gone to a lot of trouble to post the rules ... There are only 10 rules and it's only two weeks long .
As my DH would say ... " it's time to piss or get off the pot"
If you cheat - it won't work ....

How I miss Apricot Wheats in the morning...

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 10/05/2014 08:10

Ah well, my little mishap last night bit me in the bum. Since BC my chronic semi diahorrea (sp) vanished. This morning-welcome back my old friend.
Breakfast, (as ds have scoffed. All the nice eggs) spring cabbage, fried in butter with bacon. 2 glasses of water already! And green tea, or coffee with cream.
Back on it losers.

ImSoOverIt · 10/05/2014 08:24
Parsnipcake · 10/05/2014 08:28

It reall is worth doing boot camp properly. Cheating slows down the weight loss but also makes the WOE easier, as you don't get cravings. I am in week 11 and still do bootcamp rather than lite, and it's second nature now. I did actually eat a couple of blueberries this week and they tasted like pure sugar!

Try to concentrate on what you can eat, not what you can't. I have been going through my recipe books and it's like they are brand new as I am cooking things I never did as they were too rich/ calorific. This really distracts me from cake!

StuntNun · 10/05/2014 08:32

That torturous fiend aka my loving DH is just back from Belgium and brought back a bar of dark chocolate for me. Confused I snootily reminded him that I was on Bootcamp and was temporarily off the stuff. Oh well it gives me something to look forward to in a couple of weeks time. I'm going to break it into tiny pieces and eke it out for ages when I'm on to Bootcamp Light.

SayraT · 10/05/2014 09:07

Morning everyone Grin

I had planned on getting lots of washing done then going for a bike ride but its pouring down here so I'll find something else to do instead. Tonight I am heading to Glasgow to see Cirque du Soleil, my OH got tickets as a surprise. We saw them in Las Vegas one year and he didn't want to go once he saw them he loved it, I'm really looking forward to it. Heading out for dinner beforehand so I am looking at the menu so that I can plan in advance what I am going to have Grin

I agree with what parsnip said about concentrating on what you can eat, there are so many delicious things that you wouldn't eat on any other diet. The strict phase is only for two weeks then you can move to BC light which will allow you to have some nuts and berries in moderation. That means you can have Crabby's Crumble with double cream Grin worth waiting for.

If you decide that BC isn't for oyu then there is a whole section dedicated to low carbing that isn't BC where cheating is maybe more acceptable but here, I, and many others, want to stick to the strictness because we know it works, we enjoy the food and we don't want to cheat. Unfortunately for some people when they hear of others "cheating" and getting away with it they think the same will be true for them. It often isn't then those people end up feeling disheartened about the whole thing and drop out thinking that LC doesn't work when it does. You just need to do it right! Grin

You can eat loads on the WOE and further down the line when you are properly fat-adapted the occasional carby treat won't have an effect but right now, six days in, its too early for that.

Just as a comparison for people if they are interested I used MFP a year ago to try and lose weight. Religiously stuck to 1000-1500 calories per day and put on 1.4lbs over 12 weeks Sad. This year with BIWIs BC I have lost 20lbs in 10 weeks then remained stable for 6 and I am on the way down again. Yesterday I ate 2833 calories, each and every single one of them delicious Grin

Sorry for the long post, I just feel that BIWI puts a lot of effort into this and reading about "cheaters" is a bit disheartening for her.

Hope you all have a nice LC day Grin

Ruprekt · 10/05/2014 09:15

Try and eat cold butter with cucumber today. With a large glass of water......

B.....tea & yoghurt

L....bacon & eggs

D....not sure

FanDanceLil · 10/05/2014 09:15

Don't know if anyone can shed any light on this for me. I started bookcase lite 2 weeks before bookcase to ease myself into this, felt loads better and lost 11lb over the fortnight. But since then my weightloss has ground to almost a halt, only seemed to have lost a pound this week so far and I'm not deviating from the plan.

FanDanceLil · 10/05/2014 09:15

ahhh boot camp.... damn you autocorrect!!!
