Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

With regards carb flu, I know it's different but I started this woe doing Paleo. I got dreadful shakes on day 2 - literally I ate breakfast lying on the kitchen floor because I nearly passed out. For me, a few bites of sweet potato got me through that. I'm talking 20-30g, so it didn't push my carb total up drastically or stop my body switching to running on fat. I'm only writing it here because it worked for me I'm sure most low carbers wouldn't put a sweet potato anywhere near their mouths Wink. But it's slow release sugars in a tiny amount and can just help in the first few days. It stabilised me anyway and made it possible for me to carry on.

Just an idea if you're feeling extremely shaky and about to reach for chocolate.

lowcarbforthewin · 08/05/2014 10:01

And yes, carb flu does pass. Have faith, keep going.

Overtheglasseslook · 08/05/2014 10:02

I can't find the questions thread so I'll ask here. If coconut oil and coconut cream are so good, can I just eat coconut? Just raw, fresh coconut? Is that ok for bootcamp light?

feesh · 08/05/2014 10:36

Hi everyone,
I'm pretty much a week in today (although my first couple of days included some amateur errors!). I feel this WOE suits me, but I am a bit concerned about the amount of cheese I am eating, not least because I can see me getting sick of it and the dinners seem a bit too rich sometimes.

I need to think laterally about recipe ideas I think.

My husband is being really negative about it, which isn't helping, and quoting all the usual 'Mr Atkins died of a heart attack' type stuff and I can't be bothered to argue with him through the carb flu, so I am doing the Mumsnet thing of nod, smile and ignore.

Actually carb flu hasn't been too bad for me, although yesterday and today I have been VERY hungry and am struggling to think of things to eat. I'm also not drinking enough, which is ironic seeing as we live in the Middle East and it's a whopping 40 degrees outside.

Also in ironic news: I normally have ZERO social life (toddler twins/exhaustion/can't be arsed) but tonight a friend is cooking me dinner and tomorrow I am going to an all you can eat brunch. I think the brunch will be OK, but I'm not sure how I will handle tonight....when I agreed to go originally, we were going to get takeaway, but now she is cooking duck Confused

I think I will eat last night's cabbage carbonara before we go and then just pick at her food.....she's a good enough friend to forgive me for being rude!

I'm already 2kg down and my stomach feels so much flatter, so I am very happy....I just hope the weight loss continues, as I have to lose at least another 10kg and ideally more. I treated myself to some digital scales this morning, so I should be able to weigh myself more accurately.

zoodle · 08/05/2014 10:36

Lowcarbforthewin- thanks. I'll cook some sweet potato for the baby, and then hopefully won't be tempted to eat it all. Might try a nap too, as baby asleep! Oxo was yummy.

Accompaniment to soup? Hmm...more soup?? Sorry!

But on the plus side, you could throw a handful of grated cheese in there!

HolgerDanske · 08/05/2014 10:52

There's a recipe for some cheese crackers on the recipe thread that should work nicely. I've never made it but I think it's just cheese grated and dropped onto a tray then baked until it goes crispy. If you haven't looked at the recipe thread yet it's a great resource for inspiration Smile

pregnantpause · 08/05/2014 10:57

Feesh- my dh is the same. In fact we had a raging argument last night ,as , while stuffing his face with the lovely soda bread I had baked for him, with my posh sea salt crystal butter, he started banging on about how my eating all this butter and fat is not good for my health and I shouldn't be considering this long term, and it promotes an unhealthy attitude blah blah blah- I went mad. His bread and butter exacerbated the situation. He has promised to either be supportive or stfu. But it makes it so much harder having to defend the 'diet' doesn't it?

But, it's only him. Outside no one knows I'm dieting and as I'm eating those things that dieters avoid, no one suspects, and, more importantly, no one tries to convert me to their diet of choice/ bangs on about crap regarding lc without having done anymore research than blindly accepting the balanced plate idea spewed at us over the years. Confused

HolgerDanske · 08/05/2014 10:58

Also if you are missing an accompaniment to foods that go well with roasted potatoes, wedges, chips and so on, do try celeriac. It's really lovely and has a great satisfying flavour. Roasts so nicely. You can also boil and mash, and it think it'd be great for making crisps.

notamonkeysuncle · 08/05/2014 11:21

Is anyone suffering from tiredness?
I feel asleep after taking DD to school yesterday at 12, DP woke me up when he got in from work at 3.
I then went to bed at 9.30 and DD woke me up at 7.
im ready for a sleep again now

Cherrypi · 08/05/2014 11:23

3.25 lbs off this morning since Monday woo hoo. I have an interesting problem. On Saturday I'm going to that restaurant in London where you eat mystery food in complete darkness. I'm not drinking as I'm driving but I think carbs will be impossible to avoid completely in that context.

JessicaMary · 08/05/2014 11:23

B: 2 slices of bacon fried in olive oil; 3 egg yokes poached; green peppers fried with the bacon.
L will be: piece of organic salmon fried in olive oil with a tin of smoked oysters, courgettes, a whole avocado, peppers ; served with cooked spinach with butter on top
D: not sure - may be some veg with sardines.

I have been eating clean/paleo of about 4 years with very short occasional breaks so this is not hard for me. Sometimes when I'm not losing weight I have the odd baked sweet or normal potato.

I have no nuts, fruit, dried fruit or any drinks except water. I am also intolerant of cream and cheese - make my nose run and keep weight on me. Even just eating meat/fish/sea food/eggs plus low carb veg I can eat an awful lot. That is my current issue and no weight loss (week 2). I will see how the next week goes. I don't think I'll put my weight on the chart but I'll follow the threads so thanks to everyone for their postings above. I have a stone to lose (may be 2 at a push)

By the way even if I never lost another pound I will continue to eat this way for life as I've done for a few years as it makes me feel good, not catch germs and stay healthy and happy.

rubybricks · 08/05/2014 11:25

morning losers!
carb flu still raging here too - thanks for the tips above and i am trying to eat more fat (FF yog with cream AND coconut cream!)...going to try the taco bake at lunchtime before i offer it to the family Smile

minty i know what you mean about missing bread when you have soup -- i try to have plenty of other filling things to hand - celery 'hoops' filled with cream cheese, mackerel fillets, rolled up slices of ham - just other substantial things i suppose.

i second holger's celeriac recommendation - i'd never tried this before bootcamp, now don't know how i lived without it!

did a sneaky weigh in this morning and the scales are a pound down, so going in the right direction at least!

hope everyone's day goes to plan, now off to neck a pint of water before i forget...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/05/2014 11:32

Lost a stone on the last bootcamp. Hoping for the same again, already down a couple, and feel better without the processed carbs

Parsnipcake · 08/05/2014 11:41

I've been doing some research and found that beanies instant flavoured coffee is carb free, and their flavoured ground coffee is about 1 carb per cup. They have amazing flavours, such as chocolate/ vanilla/ brandy! I find a morning flavoured coff just starts the day off well.

IWillIfHeWill · 08/05/2014 11:44

aaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!

café lady told me after breakfast that tomatoes are banned as fruit....

aaarrrrrrghhh!

IWill, read the f'in fred! and the links. bugger.

ok, I feel a bit better after confession. will be having chicken and mayo for lunch, just. both those are bloody allowed. blech!

CrabbyBlossomBottom · 08/05/2014 12:07

Tomatoes aren't banned. Just check the carb content, as it varies esp with tinned ones.

IWillIfHeWill · 08/05/2014 12:14

ta! that's what I told her but I was bluffing. Wink

alleypalley · 08/05/2014 12:42

I'm on day 3 now and have no carb flu affects at all, I've been having an avocado for breakfast everyday so maybe that helped.

Just about to try my first BPC!

lowcarbforthewin · 08/05/2014 12:50

A tin of smoked oysters...Jesus that sounds good.

I had 2 boiled eggs and a babybel for breakfast
Lunch was sardines with Harissa, olive oil and lemon juice, it was amazing. Has a small salad too.
Supper will probably be steak with veg. And olives for a snack.

CQ · 08/05/2014 12:51

Day 3 here and totally agree notamonkeysuncle - I just want to sleep. had a good 7.5 hours last night but felt dreadful when I woke up, took the kids to school and then went back to bed for 90 minutes.

Now feel like I could sleep again Confused

I have a HIT/running class tomorrow morning - should I cancel for this week? Am scared I'll get a couple of miles out in the woods and then collapse.

Other than that, I'm finding it quite good - a bit of a challenge to balance the water/salt issue but having no trouble eating all the fat!

Love the sound of the Taco Bake and will try that on the kids this weekend.

Had a sneaky weigh-in this morning and down 3 lbs already Shock

lowcarbforthewin · 08/05/2014 12:51

Pregnantpause that sounds so hard with your du. Can you show him the video BIWI posted upthread, the one done by the Swedish Diet Doctor. Explains the science and it's very reassuring.

trashcanjunkie · 08/05/2014 13:07

peony pissing myself at 'ripping the bed open' Grin

sarahbeeny I am constantly amazed at how I managed to get through my dcs toddlerhood with out ever having some of the piss and shit catastrophes I read and hear about! Three boys, and never once got wee'd in the face, although I did wake up in the night with my hand in something horrid when dc1 was just out of nappies and he's gotten in to my bed and shat diarrhea....

monkeyface 1ltr of pepsi???? no wonder you're feeling bloated - even if it's sugar free it's carbonated, which is really bad news, and the sweeteners can still affect your blood sugars. Tut tut

cockbollocks are uou some kind of masochist? making chocolate cake for the kids!! Grin I have to really watch myself when I'm in the supermarket, I am desperate to feed the dcs more pastries and sweeties. I generally don't, but the urge is incredible - it's got to have a name - inner gobbler by proxy or something!

rubybricks I'd call that marinating Grin

felix I find it leaves my lips feeling moisturized - but then, I am a bit of a ramper Hmm

petals and jumping They say that the worse your withdrawal, the more severe your addiction to sugar. I guess there's more than one way to skin a cat. If you imagine it's cigarettes instead of sugar (whether you smoke/d or not) Try and think if you're someone who does better at cutting down vs going cold turkey. Personally, I'm a cold turkey kinda gal, and I went for the short sharp shock. I am lucky enough to work for myself, so I actually took a few days off, and parcelled the dcs off to their dads. I took every step I could to make my life as easy as possible for the first days - Like Renton in Trainspotting when he comes off the junk. I did this because it is the utmost priority for me in life right now, and I absolutely refuse to let anything compromise. The WOE is easier the more you do it, and in a few short weeks you'll be flying. I did this before after I left uni. I lost 6 stone. It took me a year, and I felt so stupid that I'd carried fat for ten + years, when all it took was some initial shitness, followed by organisation and discipline. I was successful at keeping it off until I gave up smoking and had cancer and dreadful life stress a few years back, when I ballooned to twenty stone! I'm at 16.5 now, and plan to sail right through to being ten or eleven stone by this time next year, and I don't have to starve myself - I just have to eat right!

sayra enjoy the meal! I suspect they will try to give you chips and rice, so be prepared to send them back. That is the trick at the Brazilian place in Newcastle Grin Then at ours they send beautiful young men around with seventy seven types of gorgeous meat! I too am now a daily weigher, and feel extremely motivated whatever I see on the scales!

pregnant I too lament the loss of the vehicle for transporting butter to my gob! Grin

petals Thanks you sound actually poorly love. Hope it passes soon xxx

crabby Grin

feesh so sorry dp isn't being supportive - If any of the older bcers can remember, we came up with some kind of medi-alert card idea that low carbers could carry and whip out to read from in case of ignorant twuntiness. Can anybody cleverer that me find it and c+p it here? Remind your dp you're not doing Atkins if he presses the issue.

minty I stick a blob of stilton in soup.

Food is going fine for me - although I had five small meals yesterday as opposed to three and a snack, but they were really small, and I drank all my water and some. I have to say the only thing I find challenging on this WOE is I do have to be mindful of portion sizes. As a chronic overeater for years, I have the ability to go above and beyond. I don't ever feel hungry, I just fail to stop eating so that is my new habit want to knobble this bc. A word of warning to any others in similar position - those angelsea pork scratchings, if eaten daily, can contribute to this. peony will testify to this truth also Grin

Right, off to work, will be back later, and play some more!

ForeskinHyena · 08/05/2014 13:14

Trying my bestest but as I have underlying medical conditions I'm not going full BC to start with. Easing into it gently.

Yesterday:
B - greek yoghurt with cream and cinnamon + a few slices of strawberry

L - went to a sandwich shop with my little bro and had a fab salad with chicken mayo, boiled egg, grated cheese. Followed by a trip to Costa where I had coffee with cream (not on their extensive menu but seemed happy to oblige!) I did sneak an Atkins bar in with me which I know is frowned upon but keeps me sane!

D - went to an Indian restaurant with DP. Shared chicken tikka, butter chicken, Lamb methi, spinach and mushrooms. Not entirely on plan for BC but about as LC as we could make it and still enjoy it. Miss my peshwari naan but not enough to order one.

Managed all my water again (yay!) Going to get super organised for the weekend with salad ingredients all chopped up ready for lunch and snacks and also make some good meal plans so I don't get caught out.

Well done to all of you who are doing the proper strict version, I'm in awe of you. Feel like a fraud posting as I'm not doing it all 100% according to the rules, but I really appreciate the support and advice on here so if it's ok I will stay on here, but not make a big deal about the off-piste bits!
