Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

Just let it cool Ruby and put it in the fridge :)

StuntNun · 07/05/2014 23:13

CB a cup of black coffee - decaf, instant, filter, espresso whatever you like. Using a blender or stick blender mix thoroughly with one teaspoon each of butter (normal or unsalted) and one teaspoon of coconut oil. You can add a dash (~10ml) of double cream if you like. Gradually increase the strength up to a tablespoon of each if you like. I like 10g butter and 15g coconut oil myself.

FelixFelix · 07/05/2014 23:53

I don't know if I'll ever be able to get past the thought of BPC Confused does it not leave you mouth feeling dead greasy?

spamm · 08/05/2014 00:48

Hey everybody - online late here, as usual, as i am on the east coast of the US. Generally a good day today - still not hungry. I woke up with a headache, but it got better after breakfast.

B: scrambled egg, mushrooms, turkey sausage (no carbs)
L: Yummy salad with avocado, blue cheese, egg and lettuce, topped with chicken
Snack: 3 chicken meatballs
D: planning roast chicken and cauliflower cheese

I still have a lot of water to drink, so that will be my goal for the evening, while I do the washing and other bits and pieces.

glenthebattleostrich · 08/05/2014 06:35

Well yesterday was disastrous, cake mix and kebab. I did stay off the wine though and today is a new day.

Planned for today

B big bowl Greek yogurt
L fried hallomi with chicken and salad
T bacon and mushroom omelette with salad.
S babybels, ham rolls, tea with cream or almond milk ( Max 3 cups)
W 4 litres

I have a massive to do list to get through so should be too busy to snack hopefully.

I do have 2 birthday cakes to ice and 2 chocolate cakes to bake / ice. Should be OK though, not a big fan of chocolate cake, I do need to not have more than a test taste of lemon butter cream though.

antimatter · 08/05/2014 07:02

Disaster for me yesterday, just ate too much of stewed veg I made Sad.
That was cabbage, courgette ad leek. had they been cooked less they would have less carbs in easily accessible form.
So folks - either nearly raw or don't bother as it is going to spoil your day...

At least I didn't have anything from the bad list, lots of it at home and at work. Changing ones habit is as important as loosing weight (saying that makes me feel better for a little bit Grin).

B: Scrambled eggs
L: Slim Noodles stir fry
D: Something raw with chicken breasts

petalsandstars · 08/05/2014 07:25

Oh my god I feel horrendous.

I have failed this morning and had sugar- literally some icing as it was there- to get rid of the shakes so I can drive.

Not sure if I can do this

jumpinghoops · 08/05/2014 07:30

Hi all,

I'm on Day 6 and feeling dreadful, worse with each day. I'm assuming this is still carb flu?! How long is it likely to last? I've been in bed at 9 every night as my body feels so achey and knackered and above all, queasy!

I've not eaten anything off plan, have had a few snacks of olives/cheese/celery+soft cheese along the way but have felt I needed them. Other than that yesterday I had:

B: scrambled eggs + mushrooms fried in butter
L: chicken salad (celery, luttuce, cucumber, olives) with olive oil and mayonnaise
D: bolognaise sauce with Parmesan cheese
2 x coffee + cream, 2.25l of water, 2 herbal teas

Day before:
B: scrambled eggs + mushrooms (as above)
L: tuna salad + olives +
D: baked salmon + Stir fry broccoli, mushrooms
2.5l water, 2 x coffee + cream, 1 x tea with tiny bit of milk

Have to leave to take my daughter to school soon and feel like I can barely put one foot in front of the other!

Ruprekt · 08/05/2014 07:45

SmileSmileSmileMorning!

Sorry for all the flu sufferers but keep going. This will pass.

Am 182lbs this morning. Down 5lbs since Monday.

Water and butter are the key.

Water and butter
Water and butter
Water and butter

B...ff yog and BPC
L...cauli cheese, sausages and hb egg
D...roasted veg with something.

Have a great day!! SmileSmileBrew

BIWI · 08/05/2014 07:47

Eat or drink something salty - try an Oxo cube dissolved in boiling water or Marmite/Bovril in boiling water.

It will soon be over!

OP posts:
BIWI · 08/05/2014 07:49

Petals - it will soon be over. Make sure you're getting sodium, magnesium and potassium - so salmon, avocado, spinach and full fat natural yoghurt

Eat loads of fat and drink loads of water. You're almost there, honestly! Don't give up now Smile

Just boiling an egg to mash with butter anf salt anf spread on celery sticks. Feeling really positive but only on day onr for me so no carb flu to contend with yet!

SayraT · 08/05/2014 08:16

Off out for dinner tonight to celebrate as one of my friends had her PhD viva yesterday and passed (as we all knew she would). Luckily it is a Brazilian place we are going to so I assume there will be lots of meaty carb-free things I can eat Grin

B: Coffee with double cream, ff yogurt
L: Mushroom stroganoff
D: Something Brazilian

Hope everyone is feeling better soon, definitely do the stock cube drink, last BC BIWI and stuntnun told me recommended it to me and it really helped me feel better.

Ruprekt well done on 5lbs down since Monday, I'm down 2lbs so very pleased.

Disclaimer: I am a daily weigher and I do not get upset/disheartened/whatever if I see the scales go up instead of down. Daily weighing isn't for everyone and you are probably better off weighing weekly. Smile

costababe · 08/05/2014 08:18

Hi, marking my place.
Haven't had time to read all the thread, but started Monday and weighed,
Not cheated honest BIWI, I actually like this woe, started back in March and haven't had any bread or potatoes in that time at all, I'm so over them!!
Glugging the water, and eating many eggs!!
Will return later, stay strong everyone.

pregnantpause · 08/05/2014 08:20

Day three. I'm almost worried that I don't feel awfulShock I am a bit lethargic, and have slept more than usual- but I think it's because I'm going to bed early to stop myself eating carbs. Toast could so easily break me. I love butter and toast is the best vehicle for getting as much butter into me as possible - probably why I'm overweight -

Anyway the plan for today is

Breakfast- coffee cream and later
Scrambled eggs and smoked salmon with mushrooms and spinach in butter
Lunch- last of the leftover chilli and steamed buttered kale
Dinner- was supposed to be pheasant but dp got the wrong thing out of the freezer- he was sent to get a pheasant out, and got, mince beefShock any other poultry I could understand, even a turkey- it's bird shaped at least, but MINCE?!Confused I'll be making some form of lasagna with Aubergine slices as the layers and a side salad

Snack- a hard boiled egg warm with butter and salt - this is the thing I am most looking forward to tbhSmile

Keep on going everyone- a fortnight feeling rough for a lifetime being slimmer, healthier and not addicted to sugar is worth it.

IWillIfHeWill · 08/05/2014 08:21

Still with it, feeling ok this morning, down a couple of pounds.

petalsandstars · 08/05/2014 08:26

Yuck - now brought up my breakfast - don't feel like doing anything but sleep but will drink water.

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 08/05/2014 08:50

petals Thanks

Did you manage to get that oxo cube down?

Jean Good luck with the gro clock! We'd have tried anything, we were desperate. We went on holiday just before we started using it and DS was in a room where he couldn't work the door handle so instead of tormenting us he just got back into bed and went to sleep! Once he'd done that we knew that it could be done, hence the gro clock.

I had my BPC with unsalted butter and my less cocountty coconut oil this morning and it was much more like a normal coffee.

Thanks for all the carb flu-ers. Mine was worst about day 2 and by two weeks I felt normal in everying but running. Evening tiredness and early morning waking was the most persistent thing for me. It will pass.

petalsandstars · 08/05/2014 09:15

Just keeping water down so far - and trying to watch the baby. Feeling very cold too. I've had to put the heating on! It's been off since start of April!

notamonkeysuncle · 08/05/2014 09:27

Morning all
I had a slight stumble last night. Woke up at 12.30 all shaking and horrible without thinking at 5 ish chocolate buttons. Felt better afterwards though so back in the wagon today
B-mushroom omelette
L-yesterday's left overs of veg and bacon in a creamy sauce
D- no idea yet, DD is begging for pasta so may do a bolognaise minus pasta for me

HolgerDanske · 08/05/2014 09:46

A really yummy alternative to pasta is to fry a couple of courgettes with olive oil garlic and chilli flakes.

CrabbyBlossomBottom · 08/05/2014 09:52

Have finally caught up with the thread but no time to do any sort of Super Reply!

I have been applying my mind to the Orgasmic Duck question:
You'll need a sharp knife, couple of duck breasts (though you could use legs, too), plenty of garlic and some sprigs of thyme or rosemary. To get it really garlickly I would do the following...

Get your duck breasts and slip the knife under the skin, slitting along one side and feeling the skin back, leaving it attached on the other side - so you've exposed the top of the breasts but can pull the skin back over afterwards.

Slice a clove of garlic very very thinly. Make numerous deep slits in the surface of the duck with the knife - just cut down with the very tip of the knife , so you end up with small slits around 1cm deep. You can do this on the bottom of the breast too.

Cut your garlic slices to size and then insert them into the slits, sticking the odd bit of herb in there too. Push them down so that the garlic is right in the hole. It should end up studded with garlic/herbs.

Crush a couple of cloves of garlic to make a paste, preferably in a pestle and mortar. Add plenty of crushed black peppercorns and finely chopped herbs. If it isn't pastey enough you could mash in a bit of butter, but there'll be enough fat from the duck skin really.

Spread the paste on the top of the breasts then pull the skin back over the top, securing into place with a couple of cocktail sticks. The fat rendering from the skin should trickle that garlic flavour right down through the meat during cooking, and the slices of garlic inside will infuse through the meat.

Cook as you would normally do. Enjoy Orgasmic Duck. Avoid breathing on others for a couple of days after. Wink

Sayra fishiness has been a rollercoaster of pleasure and disaster. Grin I will post a fuller report on the maintainers' thread as this one's so busy and focused. Glad your baby fishies are doing well.

CrabbyBlossomBottom · 08/05/2014 09:54

Feeling the skin? Confused Peeling the skin back!

Waitrose do an extra strong garlic, called La Mancha I think. As garlic is a bit carby, I buy that as it goes further in terms of flavour:carb ratio, if that makes any sense.

zoodle · 08/05/2014 09:55

Feeling rubbish today, like I'm coming down with something. And i'm so thirsty! It must be working. Yay!

Keeping on with the water and going to try the oxo cube tip. And a large snack of scrambled eggs.

B yoghurt and coconut cream
L salad with ham and cheese
D roast chicken and steamed veg.

With snacks of scrambled egg and yoghurt and boiled eggs until i feel better. Is anyone else getting obsessed with food?
