Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

Yes pingu, I often chuck a load of chopped veg in the oven with a sprinkle of herbs and a clove of garlic. Roast courgettes are lovely cold the next day.

Mumelie · 07/05/2014 18:58

Thanks BIWI. I drink gallons of water. Think my lunches are maybe a bit lacking on fat as it's mid afternoon I struggle.

FelixFelix · 07/05/2014 18:59

Queen that's amazing. I have about the same amount to lose so I'm happy to hear about your success Grin

SirNoel · 07/05/2014 19:02

ohwhat it's my bulletproof coffee- strong coffee, a tbsp coconut oil, a tbsp butter (I only buy salted) and a pinch of cinnamon. Blend it up and get it down.

Good way to up your fats

Sorry! 10%, people was what I meant! Was referring to fat content.

The issue my mind has re fat is not from a heart/health basis, more from a 'you shouldn't eat fat, or you'll get fat' basis.

HolgerDanske · 07/05/2014 19:12

Hello BIWI and everyone

Never quite got going in feb boot camp but this time round I am focused and committed and very motivated.

Lost three stone last year but as I've relaxed things since Christmas and not gone back to the WOL I have started to see a little weight back on. Time to get it sorted. Plus I felt a hundred times better when I was looking after myself.

Good luck to you all, and thank you to BIWI and others (so sorry, am terrible with names) for working at this forum.

Will be nice to have some company in this as last time I did it all by myself which can get a bit lonely on the not so great days..

Anyway is it possible for someone to add me to the spread sheet, please?

Thanks :-)

ImSoOverIt · 07/05/2014 19:18

Can anyone c&p the taco bake recipe for me please?! I have searched the recipes thread and done an advanced search but can't find it! Confused

Locarblil · 07/05/2014 19:22

Suitably chastened by BIWI. Blush

Kids are in bed finally. Anyone else find that their kids really play up on the days that they work? They're 1 & 3.

So looking for low carb cheese sauce recipes and going to have a coffee with cream as a treat.

So nice to see lots of people who've lost substantial amounts & think that could be me if I keep going. Those teas look divine. Shall be heading to Tesco's tomorrow...

HolgerDanske · 07/05/2014 19:30

Those who are sceptical about green and fruit teas, I found that after a few days of no sweet or carby foods, I really did notice a marked difference in my tastes, and suddenly fruit teas were lovely and sweet and flavourful. It's worth trying a few.

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 07/05/2014 19:30

Evening losers Grin

I've just got the monkeys to bed after the delights of bath time - DS putting a bath cup on his willy and saying it was to stop the wee coming out and DD deciding to wash her hands in a potty full of said DS's wee…

Anyway, I can now catch up with the thread!

Petals I second the glo clock - it has seriously changed our lives. We now sleep until 7:30 at weekends - this time last year I was up at 5 every day. It did take a lot of encouragement to get it going - I sent DH in a few times to stay in the room with him until the sun came up and we engineered it so his door would only open once the requisite time was reached (aka shoving a chair under his door handle)(honestly didn't distress him, before I get flamed).

I have to say though, anyone doing this on broken sleep has my complete and utter respect. I didn't start loosing weight until we sorted out the sleep, I just couldn't contemplate it before then.

Zoodle your name makes me want noodles!

Pregnant pause Although only for BCL, I eat Crabby's berry and almond crumble when I feeling poorly and want toast. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Peony charcuterie is an idea, thanks. I think I might freeze blocks of mashed swede and put it in the bottom of the coolbox, a la frozen wine box but slightly less fun!

Re: cheating - Eva (I think) said something that really resonated with me - the carbs usher the fat into your cells. They lay down a red carpet for the fat to sashay down and party on your bum Grin [got carried away there]

BIWI have a mental picture of someone in my computer like Han Solo in carbonite… bit freaked out!

[getting coat]

gillyginger · 07/05/2014 19:39

Had a ok day here

Breakfast omelette with mayo
Lunch chicken salad, with parmesan, jalapenos, small amount of red peppers and olive oil
Dinner spinach and blue cheese soup

Felt a little hungry this afternoon so had snack of chicory leaves, cheddar and some mortadella slices
Managed 3 litres of water plus couple cups if herbal teas and 2 small black coffees

SayraT · 07/05/2014 19:39

Evening everyone Grin

Got a sore head today not sure if its carb flu or not (I didn't get anything last time) as I am prone to headaches anyway Sad Changed my dinner plans as couldn't face making stroganoff so had beef kebabs instead.

PEONY get your pen out....add coconut cream to the orgasmic list, why did we not know about this last BC?!

Also I've been looking for salted caramel green tea since you mentioned it and can't find it anywhere. I've emailed Twinnings to tell them I can't find it Smile

Can't do CrabbySuperPostâ„¢ tonight but will try tomorrow morning.

LittleMissDisorganized · 07/05/2014 19:40

Imso here:
Taco bake adapted from Sten Sture Skaldeman's Low Carb High Fat Cookbook
Serves 3-4 with other veg

500g beef mince
150g cream cheese
100ml crème fraiche
half sachet taco spice mix/ cajun spice mix (or your own blend)
2 large leeks
50-100g grated hard cheese

Mix together cream cheese and crème fraiche and spread over the base of an overproof dish.
Cook mince in a pan until browned, add taco mix and mix thoroughly to achieve even coating. Add mince to dish on top of cheese mix.
Slice leeks with a mandolin or very finely slice with a knife and scatter over the top of the dish. Cover this this with the grated cheese.

Bake at 225 for 15 minutes.

NeverHadANickname · 07/05/2014 19:42

I've just caught up on the thread, my phone wouldn't connect today.

Yesterday I had:
B Scrambles eggs in butter
L Pork salad with mayo
D Belly pork with roasted cauli
I also drank 2 litres of water which was all I could manage and I was feeling really down about it all when I was sick last night but I've tried to stick at it today.

I haven't had much water today but I have eaten:
B Babybel
L Chicken drumsticks and olives
D Mushrooms and chicken in stilton and cream sauce

I know its dairy heavy today but it's all I want when I'm feeling rough and I'm still not 100%.

I think I need more salt because I don't have any in at the minute.

Ruprekt · 07/05/2014 19:45

B....yoghurt

L....sausages, eggs, mayo, coleslaw, cucumber

D....posh cauli/broccoli cheese with sage fried chicken SmileSmileSmile

FolknNorah · 07/05/2014 19:47

Hi all, hope you've all had a good day. It's good to see biwi brandishing her stick about Grin

Today I have almost had my 3 litres, it'll be son by bed -yay! So my food has been.

B: mint tea and yoghurt with linseeds ff Greek
Snack: 3 strips Parma ham wrapped around soft cheese
D: two thin steaks, left over mashed cauli and some spinach. Lots of salty butter etc
T buttery eggs, celery sticks with guacamole.

Will have another mint tea before bed. My stomach feel more like it is part of me instead of stuck on which is a good thing.

FolknNorah · 07/05/2014 19:48

Oh, I had a couple of mushrooms and some leek fried in butter with my eggs, I forgot that.

PseudoBadger · 07/05/2014 19:59

So this coconut cream - what exactly can be done with it? Just a yoghurt addition?

ImSoOverIt · 07/05/2014 20:23

Pseudo - I used it in my version of a Thai green curry, loosely following a Jamie Oliver recipe found online - I used tofu instead of prawns and I didn't use any of the fancier ingredients such as lemongrass and kafir lime leaves. Still turned out good. I guess you could use it in any recipe that needs coconut milk and just add a bit of water. I also used it to good effect in bulletproof coffee instead of coconut oil.

ImSoOverIt · 07/05/2014 20:24

Thanks little miss!!!

SayraT · 07/05/2014 20:31

pseudo I just ate it with a spoon! It is fat:protein:carb so is fine I think.

per 100ml

Fat - 19.4g
Protein - 3.4g
Carb - 1.8g

alleypalley · 07/05/2014 20:38

It's very strange getting my head round adding fat. I've been on board for a while that low fat foods are rubbish, but adding fat is something else.

I think I've cracked it though today. Cream in my coffee, coconut cream in my stir fry, frying fish in butter, full fat Greek yog. Lush Grin. I even bought blue cheese today, something I usually only get in at Christmas for a treat.

StuntNun · 07/05/2014 20:39

I've been starving today but I think it's from lack of sleep thank you DS3.

B: egg in a cup, tea
L: steak and mushrooms NOM
D: fried pork chop (and the fat from DS2 and DS3's chops cause I'm a greedy guts and they wouldn't eat it) with steamed asparagus and microwaved leeks both with melted butter poured over

Off to drink lots and lots of water now so that it's through my system before bedtime rather than in the middle of the night.

antimatter · 07/05/2014 20:48

Just made some stir fry with Slim Noodles - great stuff!
V low in carbs in total
mushrooms, beansprouts, canned tuna and Slim Noodles + fat and Soy sauce + smoked tabasco
