Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

sayra.... I am such a dunce in the kitchen... I just looked at the clove of garlic and the duck breast and sort of wiped/ waved it over the top. I need full step by step instructions !

The energy levels do kick back in after a little while on this woe - but I know what you mean. Caffeine was my other go to pick up - but I did find last bootcamp that it gave me hideous cravings for food. Green tea does it for me now ( the salted caramel twining flavour is lush)
I will highly hightly recommend to you and folknnora - the groclock sleep clock thingy. We just got one for DD3 - and she stays in bed until the sun come on the clock - genius. She is a bit older now - but it worked from night one, it comes with a story book about it to give them the idea. I notice the instructions say it can be used from 2 years.

welcome zoodle smoked mackerel sounds perfect - I like it mixed with Philly cheese... yummy

lmd loving your supersuperpost - but ow ow ow at toenails being pulled out ! When do you start your new/old job ?

arti - I think you should go for it - pisseslikeahorse is genius !

linesandlines · 07/05/2014 16:25

Do they actually taste nice Peony?

MrL bought the buttermint one and it smells divine, but herbal tea always seems to smell gorgeous and taste like gently distilled piss IME.

Parsnipcake · 07/05/2014 16:30

Salted caramel green tea has 0.2 carbs per serving, so I am having a few a day. I really like it :)

Mumelie · 07/05/2014 16:36

Hi everyone.
Been low carbing on and off since last August but this is my first bootcamp. Been mega strict this week and the carb flu has been raging yesterday and today (head ache, sore throat, etc). Pushing on through as I need to get back in my summer clothes. I'm only a few lbs overweight after losing 2 stone in 2012. That last bit takes so long. I love low carb and it really suits me.
Anyone any ideas for snacks that are not nuts (complete ban as they are my usual) or cheese? Struggling to think of any more than olives. I do still get hungry (I know I shouldnt) !
Off to the gym in a bit to fight this fluey feeling then pork tenderloin for dinner with lots of green buttered veg.

BIWI · 07/05/2014 16:55

Still hungry?! Eat more, and eat more fat. And are you drinking enough water? Often we can think we're hungry when really we're thirsty.

Salted caramel green tea sounds lovely , where do you get it from ?

Notsoskinnyminny · 07/05/2014 17:12

Neverhadanickname, IWill, Ruby and anyone else suffering from carbflu, it will pass. I was so ill, inc vomiting, from days 2-5 last BC and had blurred vision on day 2, but I remember getting up on the Saturday feeling fantastic. Dioralyte sachets helped with the nausea and keep taking ibuprofen for the headaches.

FolknNorah my tesco said there was no demand for celeriac, you can imagine my response before abandoning my trolley and going to aldi across the road and buying 2 Grin

Guysideburns you must be certifiable a baby and a pup Grin My retriever was a year older than DS. I was told I'd never carry to term so bought a dog that night, 4wks later got another bfp, went to hospital for the obligatory bedrest again only to be given aspirin and heparin and before I knew it I had 2 under 1 Grin He was fantastic with DCs but boy did he need some walking. Thankfully Psychopup's a cat in a dog's body and refuses to go out if its raining or cold and sleeps for 20+ hours a day.

Food today

B - FF yog & BPC made without cream and even nicer Smile
S - slice of frittata made last week but still tastes ok
L - peppered beef salad
S - FF yog
D - marinated pork steaks and buttery veg or omlette
W - 2l & 2 rooibos so far

D dependent on what train DD gets, she's got a training session for her summer job tomorrow so needs to come home again and she'll be in a megastrop because the scholarship she was offered doesn't include flights and she wanted to spend a few days shopping in Tokyo before flying home I so need to find a money tree or trade DH in for a millionaire Grin I did think of selling my body but I'd be lucky to get 2 bob Grin

BIWI · 07/05/2014 17:19

Well, in 10 weeks' time you might get 2/6!

SirNoel · 07/05/2014 17:20

Hey all, can't decide if I'm intrigued or repulsed by the caramel tea only one way to find out though

B- Greek yog & cream
B#2 - bacon, eggs and a sausage
L - roast gammon & green beans
T - hm burgers with spinach.

Not a great day food wise, too much processed, but still chugging the water and tomorrow will be better

Notsoskinnyminny · 07/05/2014 17:42

Thanks BIWI Grin

ImSoOverIt · 07/05/2014 17:51

Ooo - I remember something that helped me with the carb flu last time...

I was getting monstrous headaches, so instead of taking bog standard paracetamol, I took effervescent/soluble paracetamol dissolved in a pint of water. That way you got a water and sodium hit as well. I avoided dioralyte as it contained glucose iirc.

Cherrypi · 07/05/2014 18:03

Hi all.
Today I had yoghurt and cream for breakfast with a cup of coffee. Half a tea midmorning with some corned beef. Lunch corned beef, cucumber and a small chunk of cheese. Afternoon a third of a cappuccino. Think I should have gone americano. Tea was mushroom and onion omelette cooked in butter followed by a small yoghurt with coconut cream. Yum yum. Oh and four glasses of water. Will have some more now.

PeonyStick · 07/05/2014 18:32

I agree parsnip - the s.c.green tea is yum . ( I just get it from Sainsbos) . I can't get celeriac anywhere here - but that's not such a bad thing as it makes me fart like the bed's ripping open .....

QueenQueenie · 07/05/2014 18:36

How did this happen without me noticing that you're all off again?!

I'm in!

Some help / thoughts please. I've been lcing for 11 months now and I've lost c 4 stone and am THRILLED. I have been extremely good at staying on the wagon - my only lapses being the occassional few glasses of wine (but not v often).
I know weight loss will slow down the more I lose but I've lost 4 kg since the beginning of January - go up and down over the same couple of kgs but never get below that 4kg iyswim. What do I need to do?

Lighthousekeeping · 07/05/2014 18:38

Half a shoulder of fatty lamb in a mint gravy, half a pack of cauliflower rice, roasted mushrooms asparagus. I'm now having a large coffee and scooting off to work. I cannot co without caffeine in some shape or form. It's a night duty thing.

ImSoOverIt · 07/05/2014 18:40

Without being too personal queen, what is your current bmi? Do you actually need to lose more?

Congrats on the 4 stone loss by the way! You are an inspiration!

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 07/05/2014 18:43

What is this salted buttery coffee of which you speak?

lowcarbforthewin · 07/05/2014 18:43

Twinings also do the most delicious camomile tea with honey. It smells incredible.

Queen, wow 4 stone, congratulations!! How much more weight do you have to lose? If not much it can get harder. Have you tried upping the fat? If you are near your goal have a google of Shangri-La oil eating too. (think it's on the Primal forum) I've only read a bit about it but basically it involves eating a tablespoon of oil mid morning. You mustn't taste it, it must be an hour after your last meal, but there's a theory it changes your set point and reduces how much you eat over all. Which I guess is the same as drinking BPC and not eating breakfast, which a lot of people seem to do on here if they're near goal and stuck. But I've never tried any of that so can't give more advice.

Duck legs for supper, can't wait.

pingufan · 07/05/2014 18:46

Can I roast swede, leek and courgette in olive oil in the oven please?

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 07/05/2014 18:51

Oh, just looked in cupboard, got a sample of gluten free pasta the other week called Slenderia (I think) and it's less than 0.1 gram of carb per serving! God I hope it tastes good.
