Week 4 Low Carb Bootcamp - Keep on keeping on

BIWI · 03/02/2014 08:28

Morning.

I see that some of us are struggling.

I see that there is a lot of cheating.

Hmm. I wonder if there is a connection Grin

Seriously folks, this is not a terribly forgiving WOE. The idea of Bootcamp Light was to give you a bit more flexibility, but not to send you spiralling into a chocolate and alcohol-fuelled frenzy!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness or on your own personal Weight Tracker

Remember that weight loss may stop in weeks 3 and 4 - sometimes 5. It takes this long for your body to become keto adapted, i.e. to switch fully from carb-burning to fat-burning.

And if you're continually pushing up your daily carb intake, all you are doing is delaying this process

Hope you all have a good week.

Morning all,

Still no sign of the whoosh fairy, even after three days dairy free. Still weigh exactly the same as Tuesday. Don't worry I am not moaning before anyone shouts at me, merely an observation Grin

Going for another day of no dairy:
B: ooooh what shall I have, I wonder, hmmmmm, oh yeah, scrambled fucking eggs, a little ham and butter AGAIN
L: not sure as it's my day off with DS and we are usually out with friends. I think soft play hell has been touted! the land of all things beige, so I will just have coffee and see how I feel when I get home. Maybe just a BPC
D: pork steaks fried in butter, swede mash, roast broccoli

Will keep an eye on my little problem Blush mentioned upthread can't bear to say it again and see how it goes.

Not sure how long to keep the no dairy up for, especially as it doesn't seem to be having an impact on my weight. Initially I was aiming to go to Monday for official WI, but I am missing a sploosh of cream and a chunk of cheese in my life Sad

eva you think your butter on mushroom was odd? I put butter on a slice of cheese the other day Grin

Notsoskinnyminny · 07/02/2014 07:31

calamity I feel your pain, I'm 2lb up and I have stuck to the rules, but I don't feel hungry, I'm enjoy whay I'm eating so I'm going to stick it out for the 10 wks. I haven't got much to lose so I'm hoping its my body holding onto fat iykwim.

Anyway we can do this. Shit the cat's escaped from the utility room and psychopup's giving chase - exercise time for the human!!

SteeleyeStan · 07/02/2014 07:32

Good morning everyone.

I popped on the scales this morning and nearly cried. I haven't been this weight since my first/second year in university!

Actually I'm really glad to come and read sterns words about cheating this morning BIWI; not that I've been doing loads, but because I've got a bit of a tricky weekend ahead. I'll do better than lie down and let the carbs roll over me, be it socially awkward or hard on my cakebrain or not. Among other things it's a beta test weekend, which traditionally means no cooking and living on snacks, so I'll make sure we have some proper LC snacky stuff in the house. Luckily I'll pass by Lidl anyway - they had some very nice (and cheap) smoked salmon, avocados, sausage things, olives and cheeses last time...

Plan:
Breakfast: Smoked salmon and spinach omelette (starving after skipping dinner!) and oily coffee.
Coffee shop: I'll get myself a big pot of tea instead of latte & cake.
Lunch: Yesterday's stir fry if I can choke it down. Otherwise whatever I find from Lidl.
Dinner: Chicken coconut curry! I used to make this all the time, then got really sick of it, but now I have a sudden craving.

CrabbyWinterBottom · 07/02/2014 07:34
Grin

This was the article which made me cross. They published my response and I see that I opened brackets and forgot to close them, so the sentence doesn't make as much sense as it should. I can't edit it and now I'm represented as a grammatical klutz in the BMJ!

Anal and obsessive? Me? Why would you think that? Grin

Friday night is usually boozageddon night in this household. I'm going to be in intense negotiations with my elephant today. Hmm

Happy Low Carbing Friday, Campers! Flowers

LittleMissDisorganized · 07/02/2014 07:46

trashcan you sound so positive, have an amazing weekend, you sound all organised and committed and lovely to be around :)

and MrsHP that was really inspiring, thank you.

lighthouse you're not on your own to feel discouraged at the talk of takeaways and chips and chocolate cake etc. I too have stuck to it (BC light last weekend though) - my initial week whoosh was amazing, since then it's been nothing to a lb a week and that's ok - but I know that even this wouldn't be happening if I was cheating.
LOADS of us have an abnormal relationship with food in one way or another, but I think minimising it is really dangerous.

On the subject of unpleasantly smelling urine, which is a subject that embarrasses me not at all - daisy, MPR and Chester (and any others I missed) ketones should not smell terribly unpleasant - it's the same classic "sour pear drop" smell that some will be aware of on their breath, and it should be very dilute in your urine because normal kidneys won't lose more than 100g ketones a day (I think I read that on a "keto" website, will try and find the reference). Urine infections are classically cloudy, smelly and sting lots. If you are drinking loads all of these get better including the stinging... but if you are still concerned it's worth getting a bottle the day before from your GP surgery and taking an early morning specimen in to your appointment. (Saves going, being told to go for a wee, and you'll have had a litre or two of water and nothing will show up). That said, some of the B vitamins will make urine bright yellow and can smell a little bit yeasty - some general multivits have more in than others.

My personal note is if you can't last a couple of weeks without a drink, find yourself drinking more than you meant to, or drinking when you feel strong emotions, please have an honest think about that, and whether you're ready to do something about it.

Cold have moved to coughing instead, oh joy. Managed to make a birthday cake yesterday which will get out of the house this morning, unconsumed!! But I will make sure that I have a filling breakfast so that when I cut it and sit there with my herbal tea I won't have pangs of envy for those with coffee and cake. They can eat it and enjoy it, I can't, I'm trying to make it that simple :)

SayraT · 07/02/2014 07:47

Well done steeleye that's fantastic Grin

Todays menu:

B: Coffee with cream
L: Left over parmesan and linseed salmon with mashed celeriac and asparagus
D: Roast duck with broccoli and whatever other veggies I have
S: FF yoghurt

AthelstaneTheUnready · 07/02/2014 07:51

Quick post!

Cheese: no cheese for three days now - results are a 3lb weight loss and dramatically better skin. Will leave it for a while and then after another week or so try some to see if skin notices. [NB could be unrelated as around that time of the month]

smelly wee: ahhhhh... I noticed this the first week when I had a dramatic loss - and I was definitely drinking enough. Probably IS linked to fat burning in some way.

cheating: not me, Miss. A perfect bootcamp and a half. Unfortunately, BC light with it's 'have-a-glass-of-wine' is NOT for me. One glass has turned into two bottles over this week, and last night was IT. NOT having any more, allowed or not. (NB having incredibly stressful possibly homeless time was my excuse, but from now on am not listening to anymore of my rubbish excuses either).

Lovecat · 07/02/2014 07:55

Thumb bloody well done keeping away from the fruit!

Morning all! I have a busy day so am SMS first thing in the hope that I can keep away from the keyboard and actually, y'know, do stuff?

Yesterday was a bit rubbish - I skived off my renovations and went to the cinema to see a film that I'd missed when it came on a few months ago - never been on my own, in the middle of the day - it felt weirdly decadent!

So breakfast was a BPC.
Lunch was a black coffee (at the cinema)
Dinner - pork stirfried with leeks & mushrooms & cream, with the zero carb 'rice' and green beans - very filling, couldn't finish it.

I also had a white tea with raspberry leaf that sounded and smelled gorgeous but was very disappointng. I shall stick to peppermint for herbal tea, it's the only one that actually tastes of anything!

Not surprisingly, I'm constipated (sorry for TMI) and am going to have flaxseeds in yog this morning to see if it does owt.

Have a great day, everyone! :)

sybilfaulty · 07/02/2014 07:57

Low carvers! Am off to waitrose today. Don't usually get there. Anything especially yummy I should buy? Hoping for Ruprekt style bargains but seriously doubting they'll be there at 11.30....

Thanks

holmessweetholmes · 07/02/2014 08:03

Slooow weightloss here still, but I haven't got that much to lose, so I guess it's par for the course. Still having trouble drinking enough water - silly really, it's just about not being in the habit. Had a bit of a sugary cheat yesterday, and expected a bit of a gain today, but actually lost half a pound! However, I have what feels a bit like a hangover this morning - is that the sugar?

LittleMissDisorganized · 07/02/2014 08:24

Well done Steeleye and Athelstane that's brilliant. Slowly but surely here, this time next year I might be somewhere near . Right, got to get moving, procrastination is terrible!

sybilfaulty · 07/02/2014 08:26

Lovecat, can I recommend celeriac remoulade for its, er, cleansing properties? Shock

BIWI · 07/02/2014 08:37

Well done, Steeley and Athelstane! Flowers

And can I also say well done to those of you who are losing a pound a week? Slow and sustained loss is what we're after Now you have switched your body into fat-burning mode, you should expect to lose 1-2lbs a week.

Yes, that might feel slow. But remember that picture of fat that was posted? (I haven't got time right now to seek it out.)

If you didn't see that picture, just visualise 2 packs of lard. That's a pound. That's a lot of fat!

Happy Friday everyone

Sybil all sorts of wonderful things await you in waitrose! Pigs' cheeks form the meat counter are cheap and fabulous when slow braised. The smoked streaky bacon from the meat counter is good too - under £10 per kg so cheaper than pre-packed. Black Farmer chipolatas for £3, same as Sains.
They often have offers on their wild caught frozen prawns and seem to at the moment, so down to £3.50 a bag. I buy loads when they're on offer so the freezer is always stocked. Frozen squid and frozen sardine fillets (very quick and simple to cook as defrost quickly) are good too. They usually have a 2 for £4 offer on frozen berries too (not the smoothie mix as has banana in).
Often good offers on the fish counter too. You could make fish stew (I'll finally get my arse into gear and get that recipe up if you do).
Wonderful cheeses but not very cheap. Ground almonds £2.11 for a big bag. Don't know how that'd compare with your usual ones if you buy them. Their own brand tinned tomatoes are lowish carb and very cheap. They're selling a specially strong garlic which I've been buying as Garlic is surprisingly carby so I figured that I could use less garlic for the same hit, iykwim. Loose escallion shallots are good value - I use loads and root around for the really big ones. Wink

Hope that helps!

CrabbyWinterBottom · 07/02/2014 08:41

Also, if you buy Total yoghurt then Waitrose do a large tub which I haven't seen anywhere else. It's £4.49 or something, which is a saving on buying two of the usual smaller tubs.

I love their pre-packed smoked peppered mackerel too. Keeps unopened in the fridge for ages and great for a 'what shall I eat?' Quick meal with mashed swede.

CrabbyWinterBottom · 07/02/2014 08:46

Their big bottles of Il Casolare unfiltered olive oil are slightly cheaper than Sains, usually, and work out fairly reasonable £7 for a litre.

I love Waitrose! It's a myth that it's more expensive, I think, as long as you don't get seduced by all the delicious and extortionate artisany products.

LittleMissDisorganized · 07/02/2014 08:52

Waitrose (Ocado for me, living oop North, a monthly luxury!, no Waitrose shops in 100 miles or more) do the vanilla powder mentioned by BIWI, my other favourites are their peppercorns in brine which turn an average creamy sauce to an amazing one. They also sometimes have 25% off bags of 1kg of chicken breasts or thin sirloin steaks - I have both in my freezer. Last time I treated us the had organic buffalo mozzarella 2 for £3 which I think is pretty good.
I wish I was less fussy about fish Crabby, maybe now I've made progress with my weird vegetable dislikes, fish should be next...

Piscivorus · 07/02/2014 08:54

Sybil get the President butter with salt crystals that is in a domes plastic container. It is so gorgeous I cut tiny pieces off it and eat it on its own Blush
Sadly my nearest Waitrose is over 20 miles away and about 40 minutes by car so I don't get there as often as I'd like

We are going out this weekend and I will possibly not be perfect but have booked here so at least the food will be do-able. Just have to avoid the cocktails but shouldn't be hard to stick to a semi orgasmic G&T Grin

HumphreyCobbler · 07/02/2014 09:20

I know I am late to this but bulletproof coffee - WOW

EwanHoozami · 07/02/2014 09:22

Crabby I'm well up for trying pig cheeks. I have "nose to tail eating" and while I'm still too wet to try some of it (duck hearts and lamb brains Confused ) I do love an alternative cut.

today:

b - Lidl yog
L - spinach omelette
D - turnip and leftover pork bake (which hopefully will be nicer than it sounds..) it's loosely based on this

ThatYoghurtWontPotItself · 07/02/2014 09:31

ewan pig cheeks are fabulous - i use them for a stroganoff-type recipe in the slow cooker

also waitrose do pork osso bucco (like the veal but 1/4 of the price) - also amazing slow cooked. i have ox cheek from there for a stew for htis weekend

DurhamDurham · 07/02/2014 10:15

Littlemiss where are you Up North, if its the North East there's a Waitrose in Newcastle in Eldon Square shopping centre, its not the biggest but it has a good selection. Hwever I dont go very often as Im a fan of Aldi and Lidl Smile

Seri77 · 07/02/2014 10:47

I had to have two lunches yesterday. The extra lunch was a ham salad with coleslaw and cheese. It came with a pot of some unknown dressing which I discarded. Homemade lunch was sausage & egg muffins and olives.

This is because I missed dinner on Tuesday (in too much pain from the celeriac disaster) and Wednesday (worked late and too tired to eat). I didn't feel hungry until the Thursday morning about 10am and it wasn't a starving must eat or collapse feeling. I carried on with no snacks until lunchtime quite comfortably.

I think it must have been true hunger as opposed to a sugar crash, it really did feel different. Anyone else experienced this?
