Week 4 Low Carb Bootcamp - Keep on keeping on

BIWI · 03/02/2014 08:28

Morning.

I see that some of us are struggling.

I see that there is a lot of cheating.

Hmm. I wonder if there is a connection Grin

Seriously folks, this is not a terribly forgiving WOE. The idea of Bootcamp Light was to give you a bit more flexibility, but not to send you spiralling into a chocolate and alcohol-fuelled frenzy!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness or on your own personal Weight Tracker

Remember that weight loss may stop in weeks 3 and 4 - sometimes 5. It takes this long for your body to become keto adapted, i.e. to switch fully from carb-burning to fat-burning.

And if you're continually pushing up your daily carb intake, all you are doing is delaying this process

Hope you all have a good week.

Sorry for the TMI, but my wee smells Blush A bit like I've eaten asparagus, but I haven't.

So is this down to this WOE, or do I need a trip to the docs?

Have upped my fat a lot this week and have had no dairy, except for a spoon of yogurt in my curry tonight if that makes a difference. And I am drinking tonnes of water so not dehydrated.

Lovecat · 06/02/2014 22:38

Are you taking supplements,Chester? That can make my wee smell funny

MrsHerculePoirot · 06/02/2014 22:40

Hello you lot, sorry for not posting for yonks, but as I am now 27 weeks, and therefore obviously not bootcamping proper I keep forgetting to post!

Those of you struggling, keep with it, try it for the 10 weeks and then make your decision. Remember you have been given/told/programmed to think differently about food for years. For me personally I found that when I stalled, or was going up a bit it helped me to write down everything I ate and drank for ad few days and I mean everything, including the odd bite of things here and there. Very often I found I was bending the rules somewhat and needed to really think again about what I was putting in my mouth for a few days to get back on track. Very often I was not drinking nearly enough water either.

I have posted this before, but as a reminder. I am diabetic. My ha1bc in September was 43 - this is AMAZING. My cholesterol has lowered, I have lost weight, all my other blood levels were perfect, and improved. Eating low carb has allowed me to cut out all my day time insulin meaning I don't get the highs and lows I had before and it has been amazing (and helped me get upduffed obvs!).

If it isn't for you, it isn't for you, but take away from it that you don't need as many carbs as you thought you did before. I would strongly suggest stick with it properly for 10 weeks, it isn't long in the grand scheme of things, and then make your decision...

I haven't cheated Miss, honest Miss. Thank you Miss.

Calamity. I'm sorry you're feeling down and finding this hard for whatever reason. Only you can decide how important to you losing weight is and how much effort you want to put into that... no one else can do it for you but you will gets lots of handholding / support / cameraderie on here to help you along if you want it. I have been very overweight for a very long time. I have been lcarbing since last July, have lost over 3 and a half stones since then and can honestly say it really has made a huge difference to my life. I am keeping on as I still have more to lose and because I see this as a long term solution for me. Good luck.

BIWI · 06/02/2014 22:45

I wonder if smelly wee reflects losing weight? I have no idea if this is true though!

OP posts:
ChesterDrawers · 06/02/2014 22:46

No supplements but really hope it is weight loss related. That will help me overcome the shame of posting this Blush

MrsHerculePoirot · 06/02/2014 22:49

Maybe make sure you are drinking enough water to dilute it?!?

SayraT · 06/02/2014 22:50

My wee smell is definitely asparagus......its the fat you are weeing out with all the water Grin

daisychicken · 06/02/2014 22:51

smelly wee = ketosis and not enough water to drink..... and it's a different smell to cystitis wee...... my observation anyway....

daisychicken · 06/02/2014 22:52

unless like Sayra you've had asparagus and that's a different smell again!

ChesterDrawers · 06/02/2014 22:54

I've had four litres, three decaff coffees, a peppermint tea and a camomile tea so pretty sure it's not dehydration. According to the chart I'm supposed to have 2.5l for my weight.

daisychicken · 06/02/2014 23:02

Could still be ketosis.. the smell isn't from dehydration but the fact that your body is using fat for fuel and needs more water to dilute the ketones in your urine to get rid of or dilute the smell...

BIWI · 06/02/2014 23:27

Hmm. If it's still whiffy, I wonder if there's something else amiss? I wonder if you have some kind of infection? Could be worth checking with your GP?

OP posts:
Piscivorus · 06/02/2014 23:29

Calamity I have to agree with BIWI here, the rules of bootcamp are very simple, the food is enjoyable and second nature after a while.

I wonder if this is feeling stressful to you because you are obsessing over minor details, whilst regular ibuprofen may be a problem I'm sure the odd painkiller will be neither here nor there. I am asthmatic yet have lost 3 1/2 stone doing this while inhaling steroids every day and I take the odd painkiller if I need one too.

I think it is far too early to be thinking this way of eating doesn't work, like somebody else said you really need to give this the full ten weeks to allow your body to acclimatise but you do need to get your head in the right place too for this to be right for you in the longer term.

Lighthousekeeping · 06/02/2014 23:41

God, I wished I could pop into Gregg's on my way home and buy a cheese and onion pastie and then drink a litre of water to banish it!!!! It's bad enough that it's dine in for a Tenner at M and S this week and their wine is usually lovely. I just know a glass wouldn't even touch the sides. I have no will power and I'm determined that people will gasp when they see me at a family wedding in May. It will be hard to keep off those Scotish breakfast rolls that weekend. I'm worrying about it already!

Thank you kind people :)

I'll give it another few weeks. I do like the food and in particular I've got loads of belly pork to eat up.

Funny, my wee has been really smelly the last 2 days or so. Maybe I'm due a whoosh!

EvaTheOptimist · 06/02/2014 23:44

I've had such a busy day I haven't been able to visit the thread until now!

Chipping don't increase your fat with cream, use butter. My confession is today I spread some butter on a mushroom and ate it as a snack. And it was quite nice (but that is pretty weird behaviour!).

I am losing weight at the moment - combination of being very sparing with the cheese & no cream; drinking much less tea; not snacking after dinner; drinking masses of water.

If you're stalling, one of those might help. On the other hand, if you are stalling and you are still in your first 4-5 cheat-free weeks you really might just have to give it a little bit of time, while not cheating!

BTW I love the number of posts that go "I've been following bootcamp strictly except for..." If you can say "except for" you haven't been continuously cheat-free and the continuous bit really counts to get going on this.

Evening lovelies. Smile

Too tired to NC and do a super-post, sorry. Congratulations and commiserations to,all those who need them Flowers

Interesting posts from LMiss and Stunt upthread. It's astonishing how ingrained and prevalent the 'fat is bad, sugar is fine' myth has been. I really think the tide is turning now. I'm definitely getting that oxo mandolin thanks.

Thank you for all the congrats. Smile I was really pleased when I worked it out on the wii today. Slow and steady from now on, and I'm happy with that.

Cider I think hypnotherapy can be a very powerful tool, but kinesiology is quite woo tbh. I certainly wouldn't rely on that or various kinds of allergy/deficiency testing which involve muscle testing (kinesiology), bands on heads, dowsing or iridology (just some of the alternative therapy methods). And I say that as a trained herbalist!

Ewan that pork sounds gorgeous!

Sarah is that a recent article in the BMJ? Could you, link please? I left a rapid response on there today getting a bit irate about an endgames piece about a man with wet beri-beri from eating a 'low carb' diet. It bore no fucking resemblance whatsoever to a low carb diet! Hmm Angry Obviously I didn't say fuck in my rapid response... don't think that would go down well in the hallowed BMJ. Wink

MrsH 27 weeks with your bootcamp baby already! Brilliant bloods results. Are you still eating mainly low carb? How are you feeling?

Food today
L - bresaola, feta cheese, lemon juice, olive oil and gran padana. Bit naughty as no veg at all, but we didn't have any salad leaves in. God it was gorgeous though.
D - courgetti done with the julienne peeler - 2 courgettes' worth! With little tomatoes, crispy bacon, leftover chicken, pine nuts and loads of home made pesto. Quick and easy for those wanting quick recipes. The pesto was already made and I did the courgetti earlier so they had time to dry out a bit. You could easily make them in the morning or even night before.
P - yoghurt with berries, flaxseed etc.
3L water, 2'cups tea.

DP had wine, and I was able to resist. My elephant was remarkably compliant today! Shock Grin

trashcanjunkie · 07/02/2014 01:29

Hey everybody! Have been busy as fuck in rl last couple of days. Have completely maintained no dairy again. This way of eating gets easier and easier for me the more I do it. I feel like it's almost a language I'm learning - and the pathways are being laid in my brain so I become more lc fluent everyday.

Dp and I are away for the weekend from tomorrow with another couple for a remote getaway. I have shopped and cooked the most delicious lc stuff for our (6 hour) journey there and for the weekend itself. There will be a bit of boozing going on, which I may or may not join in with - I have yet to decide, but I'm not straying one whit from my lc no dairy ways BIWI Grin I am like a fucking nun! Bride of low-carb me!!! I too am a bit Shock at the amount of flagrant cheating that's going on. It's ten weeks people. That frigging food is going to be there for you afterwards if you want to have the odd treat. Chuh!

Jesus christ googoo two bars!!!

queenie I am well jel of you in the 12 stone zone Grin I remember distinctly the last time I was there a couple of years back, and I am utterly determined to make it there and beyond once more. Can't bloody wait.

ewan you filthy thing! I too have eaten food that would not bear witness well today - kipper cooked in a bag in the microwave chopped up with herbs and mayo in a bowl. mmmmmmm

Oh and just a big ol' love to crabby and all you others Grin

See ya all monday, have a good weekend x

Thumbwitch · 07/02/2014 02:25

I have to say I can't see how anyone can do this without dairy! It would completely destroy me if I had to knock dairy out as well and I'd give up in a day.

Anyway - am trying very hard to stick to bootcamp rules but with the occasional bit of fruit as well (that was SO hard, having no fruit!).

B - 2 slices of cheese
L - 2 egg, 3 mushrooms and feta cheese omelette with coriander and heaps of butter - yum!
D - will be sausages and veg, possibly with swede mash.
