Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Where we stand at the crossroads ...

BIWI · 27/01/2014 07:31

Morning everyone.

So, we enter the fabled week 3.

This week you have a choice. You can either continue with Bootcamp or you can move on to Bootcamp Light:

Rules of Bootcamp Light

Or you can do a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend. Totally up to you and what you find is working for you the most.

Don't forget to enter your weight on the weight tracker - today you should see your graph appear! Or if you prefer, here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

And now - a word of warning!

It is very, very, very common for weight loss to slow down/stop altogether in weeks 3, 4 and/or 5. This seems to be entirely normal. It's probably to do with your body adjusting to low carbing. You will have junked the glycogen stores and a load of water, and will now be burning fat. From here on, weight loss will - and should be - around 1-2lbs a week

Good luck everyone!

^carb. Typo

capsium · 01/02/2014 12:36

sorry omitted a word. The body will metabolise muscle if there is not enough glucose.

The way I see it is that we are finally tuned instruments. There are lots of body processes to keep our metabolism going. Sugar definitely is not the way to go, but lower GI again carbohydrates in fruits and vegetables and limited whole grains can provide enough carbohydrate to maintain optimum blood glucose levels, long term.

However when the system gets out of balance and we becomes too fat , thin etc restorative measures, such as Bootcamp, can be god short term. Longer term it makes sense to add low GI carbohydrates back in to the diet for most people, I think.

capsium · 01/02/2014 12:37

good. Typo.

BIWI · 01/02/2014 12:40

Absolutely, capsium.

Hi all,
Crabby and others, I'm a bit better today, making myself eat (but don't know if that's wise) but just constant background nausea and sluggishness. And pushing myself too hard, but I hate this loss of control.

MrsJoeHart there have been some terrible, damaging, programmes lately that make the hearts of those who know even a bit of something about the subject sink. This week's horizon was one of those. (don't let me start on the irresponsible forced adoption one). The Briffa book is really accessible, and when I started reading it (still in plaster, so I do a lot of sitting and reading) in preparation for starting LC Bootcamp, I read the few lines of summary at the end of each chapter out loud to my DH. He has no scientific background whatsoever, and nor does he have a weight problem; however, it was vital to me to have him on board with such a major change for me. So it's not 300 pages of biology, it's accessible, how it works, why it's safe, myth-busting, why it works for everyone, and how to do it for £6 or whatever it costs from Amazon. You won't be disappointed.

Chester I'm still concerned about you, and your emotional eating post from the other day, and being on and off. Are you ok? I can definitely hear and feel where you are coming from.

I am a lb down and centimetres in the right direction - though all within measurement error to last weeks, they are all less. I have a waist again. I am hanging on by my fingernails through feeling crap.

CrabbyWinterBottom · 01/02/2014 12:47

Sayra I have a terrible short term memory but I've developed a method. Grin I found it hard when the thread is moving so fast as I was reading posts and thinking 'ooh I want to respond to that' but then I'd read another and forget the previous one. So now I have the thread open in a second browser tab as well, scrolled to the bottom, and every time I read something that I want to reply to I just switch tabs and type it straight in. Much easier than trying to remember what you want to say to whom, or scrolling down to the bottom to type something in and losing your place. Wink

I had exactly your crumble experience with a friend on Thursday! Grin I made my berry crumble because she was coming round for tea. She told me it would be nicer if it had some of sugar in! She's a friend of BIWI's so I threatened to set BIWI and her big stick on her. Grin

Heir I initially read that as you saying that you don't know me and that I'm utterly bonkers and listen to no one... I thought... 'fair point'! Grin

Ooh Precious enjoy your meal, and the prosecco too!

JakeBullet · 01/02/2014 12:49

Briffa's book is fabulous.... read and re-read it, makes so much sense.

I do however, want to whack him round the head with it for his bizarre views on MMR and Autism.

Stick to nutrition John....you are spot on there.

BIWI · 01/02/2014 12:52

What a brilliant idea, Crabby - why on earth did I never think of doing that?! I have resorted to having a notebook on previous occasions, but that's way too much like hard work!!!

OP posts:
Thumbwitch · 01/02/2014 12:54

Yeah, BIWI, I know.
I was dead good for the first 2 weeks - and yet still had the cravings.

Can't not have stuff in the house, DH and DSs need feeding too and there would be an enormous outcry - the chocolate and biscuits though were there from before I started this, haven't bought any since.
Prawn crackers - well DH just bought those without thinking.

I know it sounds like excuses, and I know that I've had lots of fails - and I'm determined to get back on the right lines again.

Hey ho - onwards.

CrabbyWinterBottom · 01/02/2014 13:13

MrsJ the Briffa link and particularly this one
www.dietdoctor.com/sugar-vs-fat-on-bbc-which-is-worse
which Steel linked to upthread debunk that programme very well.

Yesterday my very lovely friend (who thinks this WOE is bonkers) was quoting that programme at me and being uncharacteristically patronising. Her main concern was that Mr NO-carb apparently lost 2kg of muscle mass. The second link above points out that the bod pod they measured them in does not measure muscle mass, merely the proportions of fat and non-fat mass. A quick google of their website confirmed this. He also talks about the fasting glucose test results.

LittleMiss are you familiar with the acupressure point used for nausea? Here's how to locate it. I'll look up some research on it later if you like, but I've certainly found it effective, particularly stimulated with my nail.

Kefybaby · 01/02/2014 13:17

I am struggling today. I had some wine with lunch yesterday (work event) and was then craving carbs for the first time. I had quite a few squares of dark (cooking!) chocolate and only stopped because I could not keep my eyes open. This morning I realised that before lunch I had taken an antihistamine. Antihistamine + wine = not a great combination... I still feel lethargic and in need of a boost. What do I do? I had 3 coffees already and I am thinking of making another one (with cream this time).

SteeleyeStan · 01/02/2014 13:17

Good "morning" all. Yes, I've only just had my eggs and coffee and trawled through my morning websites, so it must still be morning!

A bit of a rubbish morning here, though. My asthma and chronically blocked nose are playing up and steroid spray's not helping, and eyes are sore and red. I blame it on it being so cold outside that we've finally closed the windows in the house (usually ajar 24/7) and now the air's bad. :( And DH has a massive headache. He did go through a bag of cookies yesterday though, so serves him right.

And the house is a tip and I need to meal plan and go to bloody Asda. Whine whine whine... sorry!

Still about Horizon - I hope people realise they in no way measured anything about muscle loss. Bodypod only measure fat loss v other body mass loss. There's no way of telling what part of the other mass is water, glycogen or muscle. Anyway, being grumpy today I'm bored of thinking about the whole bloody show now.

Urgh and grump. I hope everyone else is on a much better mood!

capsium · 01/02/2014 13:24

Oh and the programme said sugars by themselves are not addictive, Supersize Soft Drink anyone? Another boiled sweetie?

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 01/02/2014 13:24

Approved food have got 'zero noodles' on a case price (12) for £3.99.

Are these the right ones, some of you have mentioned them earlier in the BC.

Shiratki Noodles.

capsium · 01/02/2014 13:26

And the twin who ate the no fat diet ate more calories for the sample meal and was still hungry after eating!

Piscivorus · 01/02/2014 13:52

Afternoon all! I'm not going to attempt to reply to people individually as too much going on so in the spirit of general shit-shouting here goes...

Happy to have educated some of you on gunts! Even happier to have the notoriety of making you clear the browsing history!

I get my noodles at Holland & Barret or Nutricentre (in our big Tesco), both of them have them on offer at the moment but not sure what price offhand

Here is something for those of you who are either constipated and looking for a solution or who fancy sugarfree sweets. My daughter's boyfriend sent it to me and it made me laugh out loud

MrsJoeHart · 01/02/2014 13:52

Thank you everyone, I knew that Horizon was flawed just not sure how or why. I read the John Briffa book back when the first Bootcamp was on, so I might dig it out and have a skim of it.

So I'm back on board and will have a good read of the thread to inspire me again.

In the meantime one thing I miss when low carbing is fruit yoghurt, I know we can have Greek yog with berries, but it doesn't quite do it for me. I've found my mixing a couple of teaspoons on protein shake powder with Greek yog I get what feel like a flavoured yoghurt with minimal carbs. The shake is 2.5 g carbs for a scoop and I'm using much less than that.

ChesterDrawers · 01/02/2014 13:54

Thanks for the concern LittleMiss, but I'm fine. I've always been an emotional eater/binger but I do think it's getting better with this WOE.

I don't know if I'll ever be free of it but three incidents in January is a definite improvement - it used to be three a week at least.

Last night was a totally planned deviation for DHs birthday and I am 100% back on it today.

BIWI · 01/02/2014 14:08

Every time I see you post, Chester, your name makes me smile Grin

CiderwithBuda · 01/02/2014 14:25

My name is CiderwithBuda and I have sinned. Big time.

And will again tonight and tomorrow,

Back on track from Monday.

PrimalLass · 01/02/2014 14:34

Thumbwitch, if I feel like that I am having either a protein shake or some marscapone mixed with cocoa powder and a slosh of cream.

Notsoskinnyminny · 01/02/2014 14:36

Afternoon losers, just back from a long walk in the woods with psychopup, Crabby you were nearly right with the spitz bit, she's a Japanese Shiba Inu - I usually get stopped by randomers and asked (read in northern accent) 'Is tha a fox' - yeah, right, I caught the bugger that shits in our garden and now I'm taking it for a walk. I wish it would go somewhere else because I'm fed up with psychopup rolling in it, usually when she goes out for her last wee and 11pm baths are not fun Grin

Pisci I always browse in private after DD searched my history and found out I was taking her to Paris. Annoying because i'd got permission for her to finish school early the day we were flying on the pretext of going to the dentist and was going to surprise her.

I still can't get my rings off and my fingers look like sausages today and I hopped on the scales and I'm 1lb up from last week. I think I need to reduce my portions or start having plain veg with butter rather than Crabby's gorgeous cauli cheese or dolphin pose which was surprisingly moreish, after the initial what's this going to taste like moment, as I only want to lose another 10-12lbs.

I've signed up for a kettleball class tomorrow so off to see what gym clothes still fit - I cancelled my membership when i changed jobs last year and don't think my usual 30 day max 6 consecutive days shred attire would go down well knickers, bra and a t-shirt if its cold Blush

PrimalLass · 01/02/2014 14:41

Oh, and if anyone else if feeling sad about the number on the scale, then have a wee trying on session. I did this morning, and things that looked awful when I was a few lb lighter were looking loose today Grin

GatoradeMeBitch · 01/02/2014 15:28

Where has halloumi been all my life?! If anyone is missing savoury snacks, fry up some halloumi cubes till they're golden brown on both sides, they really hit the spot.

mirpuppet · 01/02/2014 15:32

Oh the link on the sugar free haribos was hilarious!

Thank you.
