Has this been done before? I'm sure it has, everything's been done before but... what are your favourite 'up yours' songs that helped you over the difficult times?
Mine are

McAlmont and Butler - 'Yes (I Do Feel Better)'

Cher - 'Strong Enough'.

Anyone else want to play?

It's not really an up yours song but jamelia -Thank you, was playing when i got into my car after my first visit to the solicitor.

It is a very good song for reminding me that he is a twat and that we are better off without him

singledadofthree · 15/04/2008 00:24

also not really an up yours song - unless its at the world in general. more of a kick in the arse, song - 'I am a poor freezingly cold soul' - first heard it nearly 20 years ago and still do now and then. is a reminder of some of the places i've been, but still found my way here, a cool song.

Tippychick · 15/04/2008 08:47

Kelis one for sure
I've not seen that film wooga, I think it has Bette Midler in? I'm allergic to her I'm afraid. Lol at Heartbeat, the Nick Berry version?!

LRB978, I like that Wise Guys song. I need things like this to cheer myself up when I am getting maudlin about lost love....

I used to live in Germany and I like the old cheesey 'Alles hat ein Ende nur die Wurst hat zwei' as incorporated in this song (by Tom Angelripper I think):

www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJY8PZTgnZ0&feature=related

The chorus translates roughly as:

Everything has an end except a sausage which has two ends.
Yes, my dear, it's over.
But you shouldn't be sad.
You won't be alone very long.
Everything has an end except a sausage which has two ends.
Yes, my dear, it's over.

In the video song, the guy fancies single life again and so leaves his girlfriend. He then changes his mind and misses her but by the time he goes back she is with someone else. Oh well, enough of that.

Tippychick · 15/04/2008 11:59

lol at sky, seriously? I love love love the sausage song. Is the sausage a euphemism for something else or just a lovely simile?

skyatnight · 15/04/2008 12:35

Oh it's just a nonsense song Tippy but you can read into it what you like!

For angry 'up yours' songs, I would second:
Alanis Morisette 'u oughta know'
and:
Kelis 'I hate you so much'
Kelis 'Trick me'

Destiny's child, 'survivor' is in the same vein. I like Jamelia 'Thank You' too and Jamelia 'Superstar' cheers me up.

It tends to be what was playing around the time that things were going wrong. I used to work somewhere where we had music tv in the background all the time and this was one that was playing:
Blu Cantrell&Sean Paul, Breathe
Dodgy video. I don't think she could get much more makeup on her face.

I am a bit of a saddo so I tend to listen to sad songs rather than 'up yours' songs. I'm not a huge fan of country music but it does lend itself to sad songs:

Alison Krauss: New Favourite

Dolly Parton: The Grass Is Blue

I also love this one by Aretha Franklin:
I Never Loved A Man

The Cardigans, 'Long Gone Before Daylight' is a good 'sad' album about the darker side of love, including this track:
'And then you kissed me.'

To cheer myself up, Morecambe and Wise always works:
Bring Me Sunshine

skyatnight · 15/04/2008 12:44

More cheer up stuff:

ELO:
Don't Bring Me Down

And this video makes me laugh - ridiculous dance routine from TOTP:
Cliff Richard & Phil Everly 'she means nothing to me'
change the lyric to 'He means nothing to me' or listen to the rest of the words about how she DOES mean something to him.

Yes, I'm not that old but my (musical and other) taste is a bit dodgy. I also like Status Quo - good for cheering yourself up and getting yourself moving again.

I will check out some of the other links and references.

You don't understand me, by Armand Van Helden.

A real 'up yours' to my ex-H

"You don't even know me, you say that I'm not living right, you don't understand me, so why do you judge my life?"

Ahh memories

Just listening to 'No regrets' by Scott Walker on radio 2

"There's no regrets, no tears goodbye, I don't want you back"

skyatnight · 15/04/2008 13:51

How about:
'I can see clearly now'?

skyatnight · 15/04/2008 14:34

'Air' by The Owls but I can't find a link except a partial one from their site:
www.theowls.net/edits/edits-air.mp3

lyric: 'There is only air, where I used to care.'

wooga · 15/04/2008 18:33

Tippychick,I am confused-where did you get Bette Midler from?![puzzled face]

Nick Berry,heh heh!

THIS is what I meant, was in the charts when I split with exh, sorry got the name wrong!I find the song a bit grating now but I liked the lyrics:
'we can keep trying but things will never change.'

Tippychick · 16/04/2008 08:44

I thought Bette Midler was in the first wives club film wooga? Ignore me, I can't get a name right if I'm paid to - I'm prolly thinking of a different film!

zippitippitoes · 16/04/2008 09:00

Sputnik · 16/04/2008 09:17

Well I'm not a lone parent, but if I wanted inspiration to kick someone out I would pick Erykah Badu's Call Tyrone

MissingMyHeels · 16/04/2008 09:32

Beautiful South - A little time

Kelly Clarkson - Since you've been gone

Amy Winehouse - Tears Dry on their Own is a great one to belt out around the house!

These lyrics especially always make me

I don?t understand
Why do I stress a man?
When there?s so many better things at hand
We could've never had it all
We had to hit a wall
So this is inevitable withdrawal
Even if I stop wanting you
And perspective pushes through
I?ll be some next man?s other woman soon
I shouldn't play myself again
I Should just be my own best friend.
Not fuck myself in the head with stupid men

greeneyedgirl · 19/04/2008 09:19

If you want to feel uplifted and better about ANYTHING, including aresehole ex's, you must listen to Bowling For Soup, they are very funny and very upbeat. Ironically it was a arse ex who introduced them to me! Shut up and smile is brill "All we need is ice-cream and a hug", ahhhh so true! lyrics here! I strongly urge you to buy the album "A Hangover You Don't Deserve" is totally FAB!

greeneyedgirl · 19/04/2008 09:28

In fact, here's the song, have a listen!

smeeinit · 19/04/2008 09:34
