You lost daddy

That's what my 2 year old said to me yesterday! I was shocked :( Poor little thing.

And then my 6 year old was busy drawing our family tree without daddy this morning, and then wrote 'dad and mum split up. Mummy is sad. You bad dad.' Blimey. I always try not to show them how sad I am and I certainly don't badmouth my ex in front of them - obviously my sadness comes out sometimes and that's probably healthy, but I'm mostly happy when I'm with them. Maybe I go a bit ott with the I love you's etc...

You can never go ott with I love you's etc!!

Children are a lot more perceptive than we give them credit for. But they also get things wrong a lot of the time (e.g. 'You lost daddy'!). They will have picked up on your sadness but as you say, it's healthy - they know some things make you sad and other things make you happy.

Just keep doing what you're doing

My son is also 6....One thing I have learnt was every time he said anything about Daddy I went out of my way to reassure DS, and analysed everything he said...

He hasn't seen his Dad for 4 year January...He will talk about not having a Dad very matter of fact..I tell him he does have a Daddy just doesn't see him as matter as fact back...

kids are very resilient ..I also agree...I still tell my DS I love him all the time..Kiss him while he still lets me..These things are really good for them IMO

Awww it's so sad isn't it. It's been 11 weeks for us now... Love my boys soooo much. Off to give them cuddles and kisses before I go to bed now (hopefully it'll be a part of their dreams :) )

You wonder, don't you? My 2-yo (just 2 on separation earlier this y) says he loves me but Daddy and his half-sisters don't. And that I'm sad.

But like you, am v matter of fact and ask him if i seem sad, tell him how much we all love him and that I am v happy.

Talking is a good habit to get in and I think we're lucky we can have these chats! Not all kids open up, so it's a healthy sign!
