Ok . . .

I met a guy on match.com who seemed to tick most of my boxes. We have been emailing each other for 5 weeks, talking on messenger and on the phone.

He told me he lives about 40 miles from me and works as an engineer finding fertile soil, gas and oil underground for companies.
He said he is currently working in Malaysia and that his contract is due to finish any day now.

I really like this guy, he is funny and clever and has a lovely way with words and he seemed to like me too and was always telling me about how hard he was working to get his contract finished asap to come back to the uk to meet me.

However on Saturday I woke at 4am (midday where he is) to a phone call from him telling me that he couldn't return to the UK until he had paid the workers he had hired over there to work for him and could I please send him some money Shock Hmm
He said he would pay me back next week when he got home.

I told him in no uncertain terms that I wasn't able to send him anything as I was a lone parent and that I couldn't believe he was asking me!Angry

He apologised and explained that he won't get paid for the work he has done til he gets back to the UK and he can't come back til he has paid the workers.

I was gutted to say the least Sad as I felt that the last 5 weeks had been a complete waste of time as money was all he was really interested in.
I didn't expect to hear from him again and wondered how many other women he had who had been taken in by him.

However yesterday and today he has been mailing and phoning as usual and didn't mention the money until I asked him if he had booked his flight home yet and then he repeated that he couldn't come home until he had paid his workers.

Please ladies, as I said in the title I am completely useless at judging people, I see the best in everyone, am I being taken for a mug?

Yes
Run for the hills

brazenhussy · 08/11/2010 17:28

Even though he had no chance of getting any money out of me because I am as tight as a bears arse alone parent.

Agree with DollyTwat, run and don't look back

AlphaSchmalpha · 08/11/2010 17:32

sorry but this has SCAM written all over it. Sad for you but don't give in and tbh I wouldn't bother staying in touch with him. he is putting on the pressure - "I want to get back to the UK asap to meet you" - that's pretty full on isn't it?

BooBooGlass · 08/11/2010 17:33

Run run run. Stop all contact with this guy right now

SparklingExplosionGoldBrass · 08/11/2010 17:37

Cut him off and report him to whatever dating site you found him on - and the police. Sorry but this is a classic con. It often works because the victim feels that s/he knows the con artist because the con artist invests so much time in building up the scam (though your Mr Wonderful is undoubtedly doing exactly the same number on a dozen women at any given time, just using different pics and stories).

brazenhussy · 08/11/2010 17:39

AlphaSChmalpha yes i thought it was full on too but he is passionate in the way he talks about everything. I he won't put the pressure on me because although I like him a lot NOTHING would pursuade me to give money to a stranger Grin

OP posts:
DollyTwat · 08/11/2010 17:40

Sgb is right you should report him

brazenhussy · 08/11/2010 17:50

I had thought that I should report him today but he has removed his profile from the site and therefore all the messages he sent me when he was on the site have been deleted and I can't remember his user name.

I might just contact them anyway to see what they can do.

The funny thing is though, he told me where he lives in the UK and my friend searched and found he is actually on the electoral register there Confused

OP posts:
HappyWithLife · 08/11/2010 17:53

Please report him; you were intelligent enough to say no the first time he asked and not be taken in by it, but imagine if he tries it on someone who isn't as strong/intelligent/switched on as you. He could fleece a lone parent out of the only savings she's got, or the christmas money she's saved for her Dcs on the understanding that he'll pay her back when he 'comes home'. Save someone else the heartache and get him removed from the site. And well done for listening to the alarm bells!

DollyTwat · 08/11/2010 17:53

Well someone of that name is on the register not necessarily him.

You know this is a scam now don't you

HappyWithLife · 08/11/2010 17:54

Brazen...might not be his address or even his name

SparklingExplosionGoldBrass · 08/11/2010 17:57

I expect he's been pulled off the site because another smart woman spotted his scam and beat you to it WRT reporting him. As to being on the electoral register, that might not be him, might be a random name he picked from the phone book.

brazenhussy · 08/11/2010 18:06

See what I mean . . . I hadn't even thought of that!!!

Thank you so much for your input, I need to go and help DD3 with her homework but I will check back later Smile

Just run as fast as you can; and don't look back. If he's got such a good job why isn't he paying his way? And why the fuck should you subsidise him as you havn't even met. Scam.

ginodacampoismydh · 08/11/2010 18:22

try to report him but unfortuanatly he has probably reregisraed under a new name as he is scammer and prob does this alot. i hope are ok, just put it down to experience and move on.

brazenhussy · 08/11/2010 18:47

Thank you ginodacampoismydh, I am ok because I liked the idea of a long distance relationship and was disappointed when he origally told me he was coming back and wasn't going to be working away again .
I am honestly enjoying being a single parent and am not ready for settling down - Good job really Grin

Hi,

Not sure if you're aware but recently this scam was featured on TV...pretty sophiscated but it seems a % of women will give money - just imagine if you weren't a lone parent but perhaps had a little bit of savings you might, just might be tempted to hand over a few £k, then the amounts go up.

Do report it - they maybe able to trace records..Bet he wasn't based where he said he was either!!

brazenhussy · 08/11/2010 20:04

No I didn't hear about that houseproject and as it happens I have a lot of savings but are not one bit tempted Wink

OP posts:
AllarmBells · 08/11/2010 20:08

Do report it Brazen because the site might be able to check the IP address and stop him from reregistering using a different name.

ginodacampoismydh · 08/11/2010 21:00

good for you brazen you seem to be brushing it off well...bloody cheek of him.

readywithwellies · 08/11/2010 21:52

Don't do it!!

salizchap · 08/11/2010 22:16

Scam alert! If he was genuine he would ask a close friend or family members to help, not some random stranger he met online, especially when he knows that person is a lone parent of limited means.

DollyTwat · 08/11/2010 22:51

I saw a documentary on it and it's like a job to these men. They play the numbers game. Someone somewhere will fall for it eventually. Glad you're bright enough to see it for what it is op.
Think about it. How was he planning to pay these people? Would you really ask someone for money even if you'd known them years?

brazenhussy · 09/11/2010 08:15

I emailed him this morning to tell him to tell him that everyone on Mumsnet I had sussed him out and had reported him to Match.com and Western Union (who he asked me to pay him through)and told him that I had found a website for online dating scammers and posted his name, phone number and email addresses on there.

He rang me a minute later in floods of tears saying that he was 'honourable man' and that I 'had broken his heart' Hmm

Well never mind, better his heart broken than mine Grin Wink
