Is it right that sadiq khan's gas guzzling entourage is exempt from paying ULEZ charges.

It's been rushed through and not thought about properly

Erm... the tube is all electric so no fossil- fuel pollution

Air quality in the tubes is very bad

It's full of burning greece / oil to lubricate the trains / iron oxide / dust / dirt off millions of people / flakes of human skin and hair / fluff / all congealed together and it burns / the particulates are high down there. Researchers found 95 strains of bacteria on swabs, so with the combined heat, you can get Ill. Filthy seats. Time out did a video hitting the filthy seats with a rubber hammer and clouds of dust (largely dead skin cells and dirt) came billowing it out. The friction on the wheels combust these tiny particles.

It's not great is it.

But what if you split the 40 or so people on the bus into separate cars. The relative problem with one bus would dwarf into insignificance.

It's a bit of a red herring though. Most buses in London are moving to much cleaner forms of fuel and are generally plentiful and swift.

Air quality is an issue and even if it weren't there are just too many cars on the road that don't need to be. The vast majority of journeys are short and could be walked/ cycled or not taken at all. If this is helping that then good for our Mayor.

I am aware this is an unpopular opinion among people wedded to their cars.

Plentiful and swift in central London maybe not in outer London and not for people commuting across the M25...
The detour off the m25 due to a lorry fire sending people through Watford will have caught a lot of people out today.

Maybe you should live somewhere cleaner

So your solution to improving the air in London (and presumably the other UK cities that have the same issue) is for everyone in the cities to move out to the countryside? 🙄

But yes I do actually feel guilty about living here and the effect on the kids health, but we are quite tied due to DHs job. We do everything we can - air purifiers in every room, trees and shrubs planted around the house, and we try to limit our driving.

We live in the original ULEz zone and got rid of our unexempt diesel golf and bought an exempt second hand Toyota for £500. You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a compliant cars, loads of big standard cheap cars are fine.

But that was when relatively few people needed to replace their cars....and assumes everyone only needs a little 4/5seater run around my option for a 7 seater was the same model but a year newer Petrol engined Galaxy for £3650 I paid £3000 for mine 10 years ago....or £8950 for a 5 year old too small Zafira valued at £7000 nothing else drivable in a 5 week search

Do all the people ignorantly slagging khan off on this thread realise that this is a Tory policy mandated by Westminster and has nothing to do with Khan?

If you have an issue take it up with Shapps. Khan couldn’t stop this even if he wanted too. Westminster forced his hand.”

Ah but it’s an inconvenient fact that many would rather ignore for their own reasons.

I hope you don't use the tube then. People do move to the countryside for health reasons

It would help more if we banned planes ......of course we all choose to live where we do and pay ridiculously high housing prices, and when we can move non Londoners complain we are inflating their house prices.

jannier · 29/08/2023 23:08

Hestia2023 · 29/08/2023 22:44

Londoner here and I am very happy the ULEZ is expanding to where I live. Hoping it will improve the air quality, and maybe my children’s asthma will improve.

Khan has had the guts to do this knowing how unpopular it will be. Yes it will disadvantage some people, but my kids have also been disadvantaged by asthma and constant coughs, and sorry but I have to put my family first.

We can’t keep putting our heads in the sand about this.

Why do you think the air quality will improve if it only is under 10% of cars and once they pay £12.50 the air will be clean....won't the air blow over the M25 wall? Is there a bubble over London deflecting the aircraft pollution from all the planes that fly over London including the private jets?

Sadly the introduction of facts into the discussion doesn’t seem to have made much difference.

I wonder what those reasons could be.

So instead of finding another job and moving out to somewhere better suited to people who have asthma, the answer is to penalise poor people by charging them to use their cars to get to work / care for the vulnerable / disabled / shut down small businesses / prevent tradespeople from getting about. And plug in air purifiers. Bet they cost some to run as well.

Hestia2023 · 29/08/2023 23:34

Everyone saying ‘live somewhere else’. So basically you are happy to force people to leave their homes, jobs, families and social networks and move to somewhere unfamiliar, rather than deal with the fact that pollution from cars has a negative impact on people’s health?

Not everyone has the option to move elsewhere. So all the people who live and work in London and have to breathe in polluted air and it’s basically their own fault for living there?

If people are so committed to driving their old cars around then maybe they should be the ones to move out of London.

Hestia2023 · 29/08/2023 23:39

Also the poorest people are the ones who will benefit the most from the ULEZ. The poorest people don’t drive cars but still have to suffer the negative effects. I wish people would do some basic research before posting on these threads.

Yes, I think you should do some basic research before posting on these threads. Really think about the far reaching impact it will have on the poor / vulnerable if they can't get around easily. Because plenty of poor people do actually drive cars. And they use them to do jobs like caring for the vulnerable in their homes, for example. There's already a massive care staff shortage. Care staff will not be able to pay the ulez charges. So what happens to those people who will be without care. Do you think they will be better off?

There are 500,00 people in London with asthma. So the solution is to ship them all out? And what about the thousands of Londoners with COPD? Should they all leave too?
1,000 hospital admissions per year caused by air pollution in London. It’s a significant cost to society. But yes sure keep the cars and blame all the ill people for not leaving London.

The very ill / vulnerable people are far less likely to receive care in their own home now. So what happens to them? Did you consider those ill people?

Lots of people have asthma that is well controlled. I am one of them. London doesn't impact me. It doesn't impact lots of others who live in London. All you have is a number of people diagnosed with asthma. That's as much as you know.

There's 9 million people living in London. 1000 is a tiny number. One in 9000 admissions is possibly due to pollution, and even then you can't attribute those to pollution in its entirety. And who is making that decision. It doesn't mean pollution isn't a contributory factor, but what are the other factors that might cause those people to be hospitalised. Your approach to this is simplistic.

It's always good to think a little harder about these things. Rather than just about yourself. Give it a go.

@Carsarelife No one is forcing you to give up your car for £2k, you numpty! Sell it for what it's worth and use the proceeds to buy something that's ulez compliant.

Yep, we got much more for our non-compliant car when we replaced it earlier in the year than I was excepting given the ULEZ expansion, definitely more than the scrappage would have been worth. Not saying it wasn't annoying to replace a car that we weren't ready to get rid of yet but I can see the benefits as well as the downsides to the ULEZ.

Cynical move to introduce before the election because he knew he would never BBe elected with a policy that punishes the poorest and has no impact on the rich.

A car that is non ulez compliant is going to have dropped in value though isn't it.

Like I said, we expected this but got more for our car than we had expected to. Well after the expansion was announced, from a dealer in Rickmansworth.

JassyRadlett · 30/08/2023 07:40

(We might have got more for it if we'd sold it further away but the differential wasn't worth it for us; though it's definitely worth bearing in mind that you don't have to buy or sell locally. We've often saved on cars by buying further afield.)
