Is it right that sadiq khan's gas guzzling entourage is exempt from paying ULEZ charges.

Sadilicious · 29/08/2023 20:16

We live in the original ULEz zone and got rid of our unexempt diesel golf and bought an exempt second hand Toyota for £500. You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a compliant cars, loads of big standard cheap cars are fine.

Oblomov23 · 29/08/2023 20:21

I don't really get the ulez thing. Practically no car is exempt. Everyone I know would have to pay it. How does this help air quality. If you need to go to London your'll still go. Just pay. So it doesn't help air quality. Just penalises normal people.

Oblomov23 · 29/08/2023 20:24

My hybrid isn't compliant. Which seems unfair. It's more clean that some other diesels - that seem odd?

clarebear111 · 29/08/2023 20:24

We live on a narrow, exclusively residential boundary road, arbitrarily created when our local council brought in low traffic neighbourhoods, another of these one size fits all policies which is supposed to improve air quality. We are now seeing 1800 additional vehicles a day (the council’s own figures). We were already in the Ulez too.

No one seems to care about the air quality for those people and families who live on boundary roads like mine. The hypocrisy is staggering. If clean air is a right and not a privilege, as Sadiq khan says, then it seems to be a right accruing exclusively to those who live within a low traffic neighbourhood in my part of London.

On the other hand, the council has made an absolute fortune in fines raised from those who dared to drive down a publicly maintainable highway. It’s hard not to think it’s about anything but money.

Why is Khan not travelling everywhere on a bicycle?

Because he receives constant, credible threats to his life and requires 24h police protection, which no previous mayor has. And yes, the colour of his skin and his religion undoubtedly have a lot to do with that.

He can't be transported by bike; it's too large a risk.

Lazyusername · 29/08/2023 20:48

@donkra Ah, so he'd like everyone else to use bicycles but he is special. Has he ever considered that poorer people might have very valid excuses for continuing to use their old cars - maybe they just can't afford a new car/have anxiety around using public transport/have sciatica and can't walk very far/have a couple of toddlers and a baby to ferry around etc. etc. etc. No, he's not listening to their reasons. He's not interested in the person sitting right now with their head in their hands because their business is folding due to ULEZ. No, THEIR reasons are not of interest. Now get out of the way plebs so that he and the rest of the elite can drive past in their fancy cars.

StoatofDisarray · 29/08/2023 20:56

I live and work in central London and I love the improvement in air quality. I can sleep with my windows open and walk to and from work without the stink of car fumes in the air. I only know one person who owns a car and he only uses it to get out of town. If I need a cab I'll hire a black cab, but public transport is ok if I plan my routes and journeys to avoid the rush. The ULEZ is working for me.

StoatofDisarray · 29/08/2023 20:58

RafaistheKingofClay · 29/08/2023 18:42

Do all the people ignorantly slagging khan off on this thread realise that this is a Tory policy mandated by Westminster and has nothing to do with Khan?

If you have an issue take it up with Shapps. Khan couldn’t stop this even if he wanted too. Westminster forced his hand.

Thanks for mentioning this!

donkra · 29/08/2023 21:17

Ah, so he'd like everyone else to use bicycles but he is special

...er, in the sense that a lot of people are constantly threatening to kill him, yeah, he's "special". Do you want to be special like that? Because I love cycling, but if people were constantly credibly threatening to fucking kill me, you'd better believe I'd let the Met move me everywhere in a secure vehicle too.

Lazyusername · 29/08/2023 21:25

@donkra Yes, and in the same way other, less "important" people have their own extremely pressing reasons for continuing to use their old cars - to go each day to care for a dying relative for example. But apparently Khan doesn't give a shit about them. Maybe you should try defending some of them as vehemently as you crawl and snivel around Khan and his right to swan about in luxury cars.

mrscotton · 29/08/2023 21:25

I dont live in London but my husbands family does and the extension now covers their area. We have checked both our cars this evening and one is ulez compliant and the other isnt which completely baffles us. We have exactly the same car, same age, make & model even the same spec, they are both 15 plates (registered within a month of each other), both 2lt with the same engine, same tax on both. There are a few differences which is the colour, mine has a sunroof & they have different wheels but how does this make any difference to whether its ulez compliant? Makes absolutley no sense!

bellac11 · 29/08/2023 21:28

This doesnt just affect Londoners who still live there, I have caring responsiblities and have to drive for that, so my car needs to be compliant in order to do that, I now live no where near London. This will be the case for many people in the home counties and further afield.

MK19590 · 29/08/2023 21:39

It's nothing to do with clean air or helping the environment. It's Khan and his money grabbing mates making life's barest essentials even more unaffordable for ordinary people who didn't ask for any of this

SoupDragon · 29/08/2023 21:41

Haretest · 29/08/2023 13:02

Fewer than 10% of cars aren't compliant

According to who?

RockaLock · 29/08/2023 21:44

@Oblomov23 are you maybe getting mixed up with the congestion charge? Everyone has to pay that, even if your car is fully electric.

User174398521 · 29/08/2023 21:49

Applebeard · 29/08/2023 08:10

His 'gas guzzling entourage' doesn't pay ULEZ because the 'gas guzzling entourage' is ULEZ compliant.

The end.

Do you have a link for this, how do you know?

You are talking about central London. Not the areas covered by today's expansion. I could pretty much have written your post when I lived in zone 2. I'm now in zone 6 and life without a car here is pretty much impossible. It is a hilly journey of more than two miles to even get to the nearest bus stop. The roads are single track with no pavement so not very safe for walking or cycling. In my zone 2 are it was very different!

This! I live on the boundary of what is now a ulez zone. Most of what I do needs me to travel into the zone but my car isn’t compliant. Public transport practically non existent and it’s all country lanes with minimal paths. Getting anywhere at night or early hours of the morning is nigh on impossible

SirCharlesRainier · 29/08/2023 22:23

I don't live in London, don't really know much about ULEZ and don't know what other policies Khan has implemented, but he doesn't half wind up some absolute cunts so I've decided to be all in favour.

DefinitelyNobodyYouKnow · 29/08/2023 22:25

All petrol vehicles since about 2006 are exempt. Diesels since about 2016 ditto. You also get £2000 scrappage if your car isn't compliant. For £2,000 you can easily get something small and compliant.

This isn't some deep, dark plot to make people starve; it's somebody actually, for a very welcome change, making the decision that makes their own life a lot harder in order to make other peoples' lives better. If you're one of the people adversely affected, then that's unfortunate; claim your £2k.

But please, stop with the conspiracy theories. That way America lies...

You can only get an old banger for £2k which will probably fail its next MOT and cost another £2k to fix,

@DefinitelyNobodyYouKnow

A lot of those cars on that link are insurance cat. C and D write offs, first one says spares or repair.

Hestia2023 · 29/08/2023 22:44

Londoner here and I am very happy the ULEZ is expanding to where I live. Hoping it will improve the air quality, and maybe my children’s asthma will improve.

Khan has had the guts to do this knowing how unpopular it will be. Yes it will disadvantage some people, but my kids have also been disadvantaged by asthma and constant coughs, and sorry but I have to put my family first.

We can’t keep putting our heads in the sand about this.

When the electorate vote him out he will be. That’s how democracy works.

Hopefully this ULEZ handwringing dies out when most people realise they don’t have to pay because their cars are compliant. Absolute shit stirring by the Tories whose policy this was. You’d think they gave better things to do.

Why do you think most people in outer London have compliant cars just because his figures based on central London say so? A quick walk down my road and it was more like 20 to 25%
