Off to London soon with adult dd. Staying in Shoreditch, mid-week. Does anybody have any good restaurant/pub recommendations, please, either in Shoreditch/Spitalfields or a bit further east, if easy to get to/from?

We're both veggie.

So far I'm looking at Bubala, Padella, Barge East, Gunpowder but would love other ideas, or any comments on these ones.

Dishoom on Redchurch Street or Ottolenghi Spitalfields both great for veggies. Get gelato at Eataly Liverpool Street at some point too.

Barge East has been DELICIOUS both times I’ve been, try to get the outside back table (although they may put a four there if you’re only a two).

Humble Crumble at Spitalfields market is the best!

Lots of good veggie friendly places to eat in the area.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/06/2023 20:18

Thank you - these are great. Keep em coming!

The Duke of Cambridge in Angel is an easy walk from shoreditch and has amazing vegetarian food- it was the first organic pub in uk! Near the regents canal which is also good for a walk.
The Gate is a veggie restaurant in Angel and there's also Mildreds in Kings Cross and Dalston. I'd choose the D of C though for a special meal, the food is just so good.

The roof top bar at the Boundary Hotel is nice if you want that (expensive) London rooftop bar experience.

HundredMilesAnHour · 26/06/2023 21:07

I live in the area and can assure you that there are so many good restaurants / cafes etc, veggie/vegan whatever, that you'll need to stay for at least 3 months to even scratch the surface. Peruvian food for breakfast? You've come to the right place. Ethopian? Sure! Lots of VERY good Vietnamese on Kingsland Road. We have everything. And if you appreciate good coffee, you'll be in heaven. We even have our own urban winery (yes, they make own wine - I actually helped with bottling last year) Renegade, which has a wine bar just under the arches near Bethnal Green tube station. I recommend the Bethnal Bubbles as well as the Gary (pinot noir).

As for pubs, The Carpenters Arms on Cheshire St is good, or on Bethnal Green Road there's Well & Bucket, Further south towards Aldgate East there's The Culpeper. It really depends what you're looking for but trust me, there's no shortage of drinking venues.

Go up to Rasa in Stoke Newington

declutteringmymind · 26/06/2023 21:11

Box park for a casual lunch,
There's also the duck and waffle or sushi samba for amazing views.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/06/2023 21:39

I was reading about the Vietnamese ones earlier. Is there a specific one that people would recommend!

Pub wise, somewhere that we’d definitely be able to get a seat would be good! I like old man pubs or hipster tap room type places.

Viet Grill is probably the nicest for a special occasion and food is excellent, some of the others have more of a cafe feel.

LizHoney · 26/06/2023 21:47

I endorse The Carpenters Arms as a nice quiet pub. So friendly. Well and Bucket less so.

Song Que is a good Vietnamese. Not fancy, but delicious. Agree too about Ottolenghi, love it there.

I second this it’s great. The pubs in Stoke Newington are also excellent - Jolly Butchers, The Axe, or the Red Hand in Dalston probably all fit your brief. Probably more likely to get a seat in Stoke Newington the Shoreditch too!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/06/2023 16:49

Thanks for these. Will look everything up properly later.

Is it easy to get to Stoke Newington from Shoreditch. Have only done it from Kings Cross in the 73 before.

Hawksmoor in Spitalfields for the best steak. If you fancy a proper London caff, E Pellici on Bethnal Green Road. Been in the same family for 100 years.

OP said they're both veggie!!!🙄

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/06/2023 17:49

Sadly, as a veggie who is very 'funny' about eggs and tomatoes and doesn't eat baked beans, a traditional cafe won't work for me at all. A pity, as I'm very partial to a chip butty.

And the steak is out too.

Lots of vegan places around Brick Lane and Shoreditch. You won't be short of choice. The default in the area is vegan followed by veggie. I find myself looking sheepish and apologetic when I order a flat white and have to whisper "with cow's milk".

I'm not vegan/veggie but I'm very partial to Crosstown's vegan Dark Truffle Chocolate doughnut. 😋

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/06/2023 18:06

Thanks, @HundredMilesAnHour The doughnut sounds sublime. I'm really hoping for a specific recommendation that we can book for a nice dinner.

So far, Bubala, Rasa or Vietnamese are maybe the favourites. Barge East looks great, I'm just currently struggling to work out how easy it is to get to places - not being right next to a tube station is throwing me a bit!

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/06/2023 18:07

And having looked online at Crosstown, I might just be happy to eat my way through the entire menu.

HundredMilesAnHour · 27/06/2023 18:14

I really wouldn't worry about booking if it's midweek. Unless you want to go somewhere very in demand like The Clove Club (who do a vegetarian menu).

https://www.thecloveclub.com/api/menu/vegetarian-tasting-menu

And you don't need to stick to only veggie/vegan restaurants. Maybe that's what I was explaining badly....there are so many vegans/veggies in the area that everywhere caters for them. There'll be plenty of veggie dishes on menus.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/06/2023 18:15

Oh I know we won't need to stick to veggie restaurants.

The Clove Club looks magnificent, but too £££ for this occasion. Just want something laid back and delicious.

I forgot to say...for Barge East, the easiest way to get there if you're not familiar with the area is tube to Stratford (either Elizabeth line from Liverpool St or Central line from Liverpool St/Bethnal Green) leave via Westfield exit and stroll across the Olympic Park from there. Basically head for the London Stadium and then carry on past it until you reach the canal and Barge East. It's very straightforward. Or just Uber (go to White Post Lane, the canal bridge by Crate).
