I am a single parent of a 4 month and 13 year old on maternity leave until next May and would like to meet other single mums in local area (BS6 and environs) particularly those happy to talk of things other than sleep/feeding . . .

Mahalo and myself have rather round tummies. In fact I'm rather round all over at the moment so just look for the weeble with the red hair.

I really enjoyed last Friday - thanks you'all. I'm visiting weepy sis on Friday - am taking pen and paper to write down her C'mas shopping requests (her next op on 3rd Dec so still won't be walking or able to go anywhere by C'mas - weird to think we're thinking of C'mas already).

Anyway hope someone offering to take notes from Friday's meet so I can keep up with JPS and Tolstoy musings. Incidentally has anyone read all quiet on the western front? Thinking of getting it for my daughter but not sure . . (she's enjoying WW1 history at school and wants to read a novel on the subject).

You could try Sebastian Faulks, Birdsong
Or Regeneration by Pat Barker

All Quiet On The Weston Front - the film - is according to my partner "a pacifist master piece that is regularly banned by countries marshalling for war." Not sure what the book is like.

queenofdenial2009 · 13/10/2009 20:59

I still think Wilfred Owen's poetry is fantastic and great for that age group:

Thanks for the WW1 tips - thought Birdsong too raunchy for 13 year old, but maybe i underestimate her. Pat Barker a good idea and wilfred Owen. Am off to the fabulous yogasara postnatal and baby yoga class now to play with the baby and try to recover my ailing pelvic floor - totally recommend it to all - will see Mahola coming our of the big tums class before . . !

Yes I read all Quiet on the Western Front just the other week actually. Very well written and accessible for younger reader but pretty graphic descriptions of death and suffering - I found it disturbing and very moving. I agree that Birdsong is a bit saucy in parts for a young un - fantastic book though.
Ended up having lunch with the inlaws in Cardiff today so didn't make Yogasara - it's on the cards for next week though.
Just reading Salman Rushdie 'Moors Last Sigh' and got Richard Dawkins new book - 'Greatest Show on Earth' in my hospital bag in the off chance I might get a moment to read in between changing nappies, feeding and drinking tequila (or something like that).
Just off to meet a friend at Tinto Lounge.
Bye now ladies,
Mahalo

Where is Museum? I'm new to Bristol, and new to single motherhood (baby is 4 months old). I'll come for coffee on Friday if it's happening. L.

Ninjacat · 15/10/2009 08:02

Don't think I can make tomorrow. I have a child with flu.

Lindsay the Museum is at the top of park street between the university and Browns.

Going to try, but babies being babies my plan may be hijack. I?m sure you?re all-aware of how to remedies a constipated baby; just try leavening the house for a late appointment, guaranteed to cause a bum explosion.
oh yea.. Intellectual...er?
