New thread as the other one is not going to last long.

OP posts:
Paddlechick666 · 04/01/2008 10:08

We need a cinema night too.

I ordinarily avoid movies made from books I have enjoyed but I have heard good things of the Kite Runner. Not least the cinematography. I really want to see The Golden Compass too.

I only have in-house babysitting on Wednesdays now I'm afraid.

Anyone up for it?

rosmerta · 04/01/2008 10:14

I would be paddle, me & dh like such different films we never really get to see what we I want!

Btw, if anyone's interested there's a book swap thread going on

sfxmum · 04/01/2008 10:15

good morning all

COV fingers crossed for your dh hope all goes well

my shameful reading record for last year left me with stacks to read, now going through The Shadow of the Wind, and started the year with Kathy Reich to get me going, have at least 4 others lined up as well as 3 graphic novels I have been meaning to read for ages.

hope you are all well

Paddlechick666 · 04/01/2008 10:21

I sort of enjoyed Shadow of the Wind sfx but did find it getting a bit convoluted.

I did quite well with my reading from about summer onwards last year.

This year I should focus on reading more proffessional texts in the evenings rather than fiction I think.

Got the new abode sorted, next is to get my career kick started and try to boost my earnings.

ComeOVeneer · 04/01/2008 10:23

Morning all. Right with dh back at work and the children back to school/nursery next week, my house is getting an overhaul. All being well, in a couple of months I should have sorted through all the boxes of baby stuff/ girls and boys clothes (ages ranging 0-3 boys, 0-5 girls). As it is now certain no.3 isn't going to happen I am proposing a mass permenant clear out. I was wondering if any of you would be interested to come over say one sat/sun for a simple lunch and a rummage before it heads to charity? (date to be announced).

sfxmum · 04/01/2008 10:29

cov I am sorry about the 3rd hope you are feeling ok about it now.

paddle I expect it will be convoluted in good old magic realism type tradition, so far I just find it very funny

GloriaInEleusis · 04/01/2008 11:18

COV, sorry about no no.3. I know that's a big disappointment for you.

ComeOVeneer · 04/01/2008 11:23

It is a disappointment, but I have been slowly coming to terms with it for the past 6 months or so as it became more and more apparent it won't happen. TBH the way I am feeling after the xmas period aand being ill recently, I barely have enough energy for 2 no way could I contemplate being pregnant or having a newborn atm. The most important thing is I have 2 happy and healthy children and my main focus right now is dh's health. Also I am busy organising our summer holiday and it is nice to think we can travel so much lighter this year (first year without travel cot and push chair)

Paddlechick666 · 04/01/2008 11:31

CoV, hope the liver biopsy goes okay for your H. glad to hear you sound philisophical about #3 altho it must be disappointing.

i think, had things been different, i would have liked a 2nd but it's highly unlikely for me now.

talking of travel cots, i have one for sale. it was supposed to last dd till she was at least 3 but she's too darn tall!

anyone fancy this: www.kiddicare.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/productdisplayA_42+324_10751_-1_14562_15316_10001_14562

I also have an extra mattress for it. Unfortunately I no longer have the detachable toy bar but other than that it's in top notch condition and a great piece of kit.

GloriaInEleusis · 04/01/2008 11:43

Good luck, Paddle. I couldn't give mine away. (here)

Paddlechick666 · 04/01/2008 11:58

hmm, think you might have more luck if you put a picture of them and also bigged them up a bit.

however, you have reminded me that foxie asked a question and the answer may well help you too.

FREECYCLE!!!

just google freecycle. it's a yahoo group, you join the group for your area and you list what you want to get rid of. you can also do "wanted" if there's something you particularly need.

your stuff will go quicksmart I promise.

I will ebay my travel cot as it's gotta be worth 30 or 40 quid IMO.

MrsRecycle · 04/01/2008 12:14

Yes - I love freecycle - my CM's ds got to see a Chelsea match courtesy of a generous freecycler. He was over the moon. I also met a new mum on freecycle and pointed her in the direction of mumsnet and she's hooked. She might be interested in your things ele - I've emailed her and am seeing her tonight.

Sorry to hear about no3 COV - I must admit now that ds is walking, he's turned into a terror and it's hard work. The good thing is he sleeps from 7pm until 7am so at least I don't have the sleepless nights that most Mums have. Even if you have older kids it doesn't get any easier with all of the activities that they have.

I won't tell you what I'm reading as it'll shatter your elusions about me!!

MrsRecycle · 04/01/2008 12:15

Oh meant to say PC love the cinema idea - Weds nights might be good for me if I can get dh to babysit as AP goes to Swedish Church on that night. Although can't do next Weds as I'm in Manchester working.

foxcubinapeartree · 04/01/2008 12:22

Mornin' All

Paddle thanks for the Freecycle reminder and I would love to go and see the Kite Runner on a Weds evening. I would need to do it 'twixt DS2 feeds but that should be OK.

I also want to see "Control" (about Ian Curtis) but it seemed to dissappear of the radar so may just borrow DVD from Blockbusters

The scenery in Kite Runner should be grand, but I am a bit worried it won't live up to the book.

I have started Thousand Suns and it is very engaging - bearing in mind its the first book I have felt able to read for a year. C'Course you can borrow it Pads/Ros - I still have other people's books from the last book swap. When I've finished this book, shall I organise a book swap again? I haven't invited anyone round for ages as I have been struggling to juggle work/3 kids - incl a baby etc etc

Talking of which Paddle and CoV - sorry to hear how you are feeling about having another child. CoV IKWYM - your two are gorgeous aren't they? I'd love to pop over one weekend for a rummage - I could do Sats with DCs or Sundays without. Whatever is easier. Will be thinking about your DH next week and say a prayer for him.

DS2 just climbed the entire stairs to the top floor and then wanted to climb down again face first. Am trying to train him to go feet first.

foxcubinapeartree · 04/01/2008 12:26

Go on MrsR you can't tease us and then not tell - what are you reading?

I think kids get more demanding as they get older as they need so much more feedback/discussion/chauffeurring/homework/school stuff. babies have fairly basic needs which are mainly physical with lots of hugs.

MrsRecycle · 04/01/2008 12:39

well i'll tease you a little bit more - its by Jeremy Paxman! How boring I hear you say! Wait until you hear what it's about!!

Kewcumber · 04/01/2008 12:58

Foxie - DS would only walk up and down stairs which was more than a little hairy, would never come down backwards or on his bottom. Contrary little bugger.

WOuld love to do cinema trip but Weds is the worst possibe day for me at the moment - can only do Thurs or Sat.

Went to see Kew Riverside nursery - saw your DS Sushi - he kept looking at me very confused!

Although council fund 2.5 hrs x 5 sessions in council terms 2.5 hours is about £8 or something mad and nursery charge £32 for a full morning 7.30-1 and won't do less because obviously they have to have staff full time for people who use it as a day nursery. I may send him one full day (as can then offset cost against reduction in CM hours) and one Friday morning from Jan next year. Then I only have to find the cost of the Friday morning (only!).

The bad news is that the school is so oversubscribed (120 apps for 30 places this year) that Kew riverside tend to dominate the places. If you're not within half a mile of the back gates then forget it! And even that is no guarantee. Nursery Manager told me that where I live isn't out of the question but would probably be waitlisted.

Kewcumber · 04/01/2008 12:59

Cov and Paddle - there's always adoption

MrsRecycle · 04/01/2008 13:09

Oh KC - I'd love to adopt - would love another one but not medically possible. So when I'm a SAHM in two years time I'm going to look into it. I'd love an older boy (not a newborn).

rosmerta · 04/01/2008 13:20

Funnily enough, I was talking with dh about adoption the other week, just asking him if he'd ever consider it. He didn't think it would be fair for us to adopt when so many other people can't have children. It is something I would consider doing though!

MrsR, is it the royalty one you're reading?

SushiMummy · 04/01/2008 13:21

CoV - fingers crossed for your DH for next week. Hope it goes OK.

QC - Really? We don't really have a plan B... I don't even know how far we live from the school (approx 10 minutes walk) but have a horrible feeling we are out of the catchment.

Paddlechick666 · 04/01/2008 13:21

i'm too old for UK adoption and doubt I could ever afford inter-country tbh.

it has crossed my mind tho.

must admit i did think those nurseries where at the top end of the pricings. i considered the one in teddington when first returned to work.

i'm paying £252 for dd's first term at pre-school which is 18 sessions. i am a bit worried that i have taken on too much financially but hopefully H will stump up.

MrsR, ds will be an older boy by then lol

SJ99 · 04/01/2008 13:23

Hello all

Sorry Paddle & Cov there won't be anymore kids for now but you both have lovely DC to be proud of. We will try for #2 this year and see how that goes...

Am up for cinema but but to see Kite Runner. I too have a backlog of books to get through one of which is said film and I'd like to read book 1st before I see it. Am currently reading 'The Island' it's really good and I keep reminiscing about our summer hols to Crete as that's where it's set.

Ros - Book club post looks good but not sure I can read 1 book/mth, I used to read so much more when I used to BF, v. relaxing

No snow here in Wales either, boo hoo

GloriaInEleusis · 04/01/2008 13:35

Applying to schools in the Richmond borough is truly a hair raising experience. Remember OXO last year? I am so thankful for the place we have in DD's school. DS will be applying to the nursery this month for September entry. But I can relax just a tiny bit this time because there is a sybming priority rule.

I think it's crazy that school entry for 3 year olds is fiercley competitive in this country. Truly crazy.

So, you guys have my sympathies. But, I would advise you to scramble up some back up plans, and know what the entry criteria is.

rosmerta · 04/01/2008 13:35

Meant to ask, does anyone fancy coming over to mine for a cuppa this afternoon? I would offer to meet somewhere but I'm feeling a little tender today.

Ds has gone for his nap so it would be around 3.30pm?
