Apparently they are sick of going to York. TBF i take them every year. Three girls aged 11, 13 and 14. I've already booked it so it's not negociable but, can anyone advise me of the great things to do there?

Oooh I've just googled the Leeds Owl Trail...might do it myself actually!

FlossyMoo · 26/07/2014 10:37

Thanks for correcting me Prima!

OP my apologises the hotel you are staying in is a less than 10 minute walk to the station.

The owl is the coat of arms for Leeds. They are part of the Savile families coat of arms from the 1700's I think.

Primadonnagirl · 26/07/2014 12:04

Oh dear..not the Saville family?

LePetitPont · 26/07/2014 12:09

Whilst the crowne plaza isn't the one bang opposite the station, it is pretty central - about 5 mins from the station.

Will echo Trinity for brilliant clothes shopping and family friendly eating. The lovely mexican place is cielo blanco, plus there is a carluccios, giraffe, wagammas etc. Can also suggest some independents if that is up your street?

I would definitely make the most of the connectivity from Leeds station. Perhaps investigate getting a weekly pass for zones 1-4 which will cover a lot of the suggestions previously posted - www.wymetro.com.

One of my favourite places is Bolton abbey. Beautiful walks, lovely old ruined abbey, nice tea room, small pebble beach for a paddle - and can get the bus: www.dalesbus.org/cravenlink/

There is a new art space, the tetley, that has done children's craft activities in the past - it's near Leeds Dock, home of the aforementioned mumtaz.

You can walk along the canal to kirkstall abbey - or get the train out to bingley, see the five rise locks and walk along to saltaire (again to echo well worth a visit) before getting train back to Leeds. Actually, you may be able to hire bikes from Leeds station cycle hub and the can is great for cycling along.

There is a sculpture museum next to the gallery and the ysp will be well worth the trip.

Everyman cinema is pricey but a lovely treat, or the vue in the light.

Lotherton hall for bird gardens, thwaites water mill I've heard good things about, Roundhay park always a winner...

Enjoy our great city!

FlossyMoo · 26/07/2014 12:20

No idea Prima probably not though.

LePetitPont · 26/07/2014 12:29

Also depending on when you are visiting, some good groupon outdoor theatre offers for temple newsam:

Sorry, had to laugh about the getting to eat balti with your hands comment! I've got visions of people shoving both hands into huge bowls of food like they haven't eaten in days.

Lighthousekeeping · 26/07/2014 13:14

It's next week. I guess I need a clear plan now.

Leeds pride is on next weekend (main event on the 3rd) so it will be party atmosphere in the city Grin

Lighthousekeeping · 26/07/2014 14:35

Oh we will just miss it! Never mind. I had a bad experience in a rough gay pub in Leeds once all self inflicted I think this is my first time back!

OP posts:
Lighthousekeeping · 27/07/2014 10:49

Anything else? We are going on Tuesday Grin

There's a natural history museum. And likely lido is nice. And Harrogate for a day out.

BikeRunSki · 27/07/2014 13:33

Where's the natural history museum in Leeds? Is it the Leeds City Museum on Millennium Square/Cookridge St ?

Ilovenewts · 27/07/2014 13:48

Yes that's the one. It's only small but it's nice for a look.

Leeds2 · 27/07/2014 13:50

Have you told your girls yet, OP?

Lighthousekeeping · 27/07/2014 15:48

They aren't mine I'm just giving theirum a break. They are a bit Shock but I've only just text them. All they want to kno is how big the pool is ! The weather for next week is rain!

OP posts:
Leeds2 · 27/07/2014 16:54

17leftfeet · 27/07/2014 17:03

Local weather says dry and low 20s until Friday

Imliketotallyummm · 27/07/2014 17:20

I live near Leeds and my dd is 13. She loves walking through the arcades and looking in the dolls shop and bead shop, watching the clock strike in the Thorntons arcade, people watching and looking in the expensive shops in the Victoria quarter (arcades). She loves wandering round the trinity centre (shopping), and there are lots and lots of cafes and restaurants - have alook in the Corn Exchange too. . The tiled cafe in the library/art gallery off the Headrow is very unusual and serves good coffee but there are also great cafes in the arcades.

We love Roundhay park, have a walk down to the lake. And the tropical house is great.

I'm also sure there's a treasure trail in Leeds if you google it.

The theatre is a lovely old fashioned one and there' s also the Light cinema.

atos35 · 27/07/2014 18:06

Isn't the sculpture park nearer to Wakefield? It's a well connected area by public transport but it might be best doing a quick Google search for that. I recommend a train ride out to Hebden Bridge, lovely town, great little shops and cafe's and walks by the canal. It's a shame you don't drive as there is some really beautiful countryside around Leeds. You might be able to get out to the national coal mining museaum as well, not sure about girls but I took my boys a couple of years ago and they had a great time.

Primadonnagirl · 27/07/2014 18:10

Please let us know what you all think of Leeds! And what you did!

cathyandclaire · 27/07/2014 18:35

We live between Leeds, York and Harrogate and my teenage DDs would choose a day in Leeds over the other two every time. It feels much younger, buzzier and more cosmopolitan...oh and the shopping is way better too!
They love the Trinity, the Playhouse and the Victoria Quarter is good for window shopping. The armouries and Harewood House are great too, although we may have overdone those when they were younger!

Have a fab time :)

Lighthousekeeping · 29/07/2014 09:16

Any afternoon tea spots?

OP posts:
legoqueen · 29/07/2014 09:31

Betty's in Ilkley or Browns on the Headrow in Leeds will meet your afternoon tea needs...or Harvey Nicks!

ApocalypseNowt · 29/07/2014 09:38

I love Browns on the Headrow!

Can I also recommend Arts Cafe on Call Lane for lunch or evening meal. V cool and the food is amazing (might be worth booking though as it's v popular Smile
