Hello!

Couldn't sleep last night and nearly finished the cave bear book. Somebody should have edited the thing. Heroine and some characters quite likeable and believable. But I have always preferred description of the far-fetched/magic to that of ignorance/superstitions. We all know about the patriachy and the Neanderthal (some might say they are one and the same). Boring. I think that's why I like Harry Potter better than the His Dark Materials books even though the later books are much better written - Harry Potter is far-fetched and unlikely but all that religious stuff is just, well, tedious... Earthsea books and Jonathan strange book, on the other hand, are well-written and simultaneously far-fetched and believeable. Smile

Dissertation over. Grin

Now must decide when to cook eye-ball speghetti, courtesy of Beast Quest annual. Are eye balls better for lunch or tea?

And dull stuff like wtf are the PE stuff.

sfxmum · 04/09/2011 15:08

hello

copper re Dark Material maybe the religious stuff is less tedious if you have a religious background? to me it felt more like recognition, I enjoyed them, and a few passages utterly heart breaking.

not much sleep last night either both my difficulty and dd's unsettledness

went to Richmond ark did a couple of miles and sat reading while dd did her thing, we were all very wet by the end of it and abandoned the plan for a picnic, came home instead.

I know where the PE kit isGrin but haven't done all the labels yet, and dd needs new socks too

In my time we had to get books, assorted pencils exercise books and so on, huge parcel from the stationers/ bookshop before the start of the school year.

UptoapointLordCopper · 04/09/2011 16:28

Looted library again!

sfx - tedious because predictable. Seem to have heard it all before. I think ending was very brave. Makes you cry. But I want to know what hornbeam trees look like.

sfxmum · 04/09/2011 17:05

granted copper I found I was just emotionally caught up

Kora · 04/09/2011 20:15

Hi KewC, no medical knowledge but DH's family are all doctors and have picked up that rheumatology has something to do with the tissues around joints and bones, which is what is probably inflamed. Hope they sort you out and you feel better soon.

Sfx, Copper, cave bear book is on our shelf as DH has read it, but he had never recommended it sufficiently for me to pick it up! Grin I'm intrigued... Apparently the author is very hot on proper research etc, but I can imagine the patriarchal stuff can drag. That's why I've never quite got into Hardy etc (although he looked at class as well as gender divides), but should persevere with it perhaps and I suppose that was contemporary to him!

Persepolis is fabulous. So alive despite all the dark times. Some of the stories reminded me of Chile, though obviously not comparing two. I passed it onto my mum, who found it very haunting but very beautiful book. Never seen the movie. Dark materials - impressed but also not affected as much as expected, but I suspect you're right sfx, the religious arc wasn't as deeply ingrained in me which probably softened the blows. Always been a bit of a heathen really. Grin

Four more days to DD1's first school experience... Think I've got everything... Confused

Kewcumber · 04/09/2011 21:16

Thanks for all good wishes but they completely wasted on me Grin I feel absolutely fine! One lump has been there for 30 years (always told it was cartilidge (??)) but fairly recently another has come up and I have lop sided collar bones now. But slightly gripey no more painful than that. Get the impression my GP hasn't seen anything quite like it before so is palming me off!

I do like to continue my tradition of mysterious medical ailments! Grin

Kewcumber · 04/09/2011 21:17

Kora is DD having a school playdate on Thurs then? She isn;t starting quite yet (from memory)

Nice to "see" you here Hester particularly as you come with ice-cream recommendations...

hester · 04/09/2011 23:56

I went back today for Gooseberry and Elderflower, Kew. Not so good.

UptoapointLordCopper · 05/09/2011 08:57

Smile at Hester the official ice cream taster. Like the Beefeaters but better.

Kewcumber · 05/09/2011 11:00

who in their right mind would think that gooseberry and elderflower would rival honeycomb?! Shock Get a grip woman!

sfxmum · 05/09/2011 11:24

gooseberry is good for a creamy fool and elderflower makes a lovely sorbet
I am an expert meGrin

sfxmum · 05/09/2011 11:25

Kora is she starting on the first week of term? big girlGrin mine was on the 3rd week I think

islandhaze · 05/09/2011 11:52

Good morning!
I left my DD1 at school today :) She was so exited to go, i hope she still will be tomorrow :o
I got emotional, as my "little" girl lined up to enter her class. School looks really nice, so do the teachers. Parents were friendly i hope kids will be too :)
Now need to learn enjoy my "vacation" :o

I am starting to read a book too! So happy after such a long time!!!!

sfxmum · 05/09/2011 11:58

islandhaze hi and congrats on keeping sanityGrin hope dd1 gets on well, I am sure she will, I had not realised she would start today

hester · 05/09/2011 12:33

I thought it might be.. healthier. Full of vitamins or something. I stand corrected.

Congratulations on the new start, islandhaze! It takes me back to this time last year, when my dd1 started Reception. She carried on being excited to go, and never once cried or was reluctant to go in. Hope yours is the same Smile

Kora · 05/09/2011 13:26

KewC - glad your ailments not bothering you! long may that continue!

Congratulations islandhaze. Hope your DD loves her first day! Smile My DD's got her school playdate on Friday (I wasn't counting yesterday bizarrely, sorry), but it counts in her mind as first day it seems! Which I suppose is fair enough as she's going to the school and meeting everyone. Then she starts properly on 19th...

Wish I had some ice cream, any ice cream... Grin

Kewcumber · 05/09/2011 13:49

hester, I think Island's DD is same age as yours - shes just starting because they are forrin and just arrived here. [Sorry, have to whisper because we have quite a few forriners on this thread so need to be sensitive]

islandhaze · 05/09/2011 13:50

Thank you all for greetings! She is a strong social bug, so iam sure she will do just fine, we will need to catch up a lot, as she skipped streight to Y2 :)

I love Ben and Jerrys ice cream. No, not true, i am absolutely addicted to it :o

Kewcumber · 05/09/2011 13:51

on which note DS announced to me rather proudly "I speak very good English don't I mummy when I was not born here" Grin

And also to our WElsh friends "you speak quite good english but not as good as X (his son)

To be fair my friend has quite a strong Welsh accent!

Kewcumber · 05/09/2011 13:52

Oh I thought she was going into yr 1 Island - I'm losing my marbles! I blame it on my wandering rib.

vbus · 05/09/2011 13:58

Hellloo all

islandhaze - how are you feeling now? hope your dd enjoys school, so very exciting!

kora - good luck for your dd, keep tissues at the ready! We start back tomorrow, found Pe kit but few labels to do tonight

Kew - glad to hear that the medical mysteries continue, keeps those docs on their toes

Hester - thanks for tip gratefully received Smile can heartily recommend their chocolate brownies, delicious

Tilly - glad you had a good trip, remind me again which days DS2 does?

Had a great trip but exhausting as we crammed a lot into the wkend. Got to meet my neice for first time, she's a cutie and the boys had her in giggles. Took boys swimming ths morning, pool was nice and empty, I guess a lot of people have started school already

hope everyone else well

Hello! Last day of freedom spent at friend's. Very nice. Had leftover eyeballs for lunch. Tried to come back via Kew Retail Park but Mortlake Road shut northbound! Got there after various short cuts but no right trousers size for DS1. Oh well. He'll just have to do without a spare.

DS1 starting Y3 tomorrow. He has remained enthusiastic about school for 3 years now. Shock DS2 also enthusiastic, but seems under some illusion that he'll still have last year's teacher. Hmm He'll find out!

sfxmum · 05/09/2011 17:15

Mortlake Road after Kew Road, they want to keep everyone not local out Grin

dd's school introduces the children to the teachers they will have the following year, before the end of term.

still looking around for ballet stuff, good grief music, horse riding, swimming, netball and whatever else she wants to do I really am not a pushy parentBlush

will probably take dd to pool tomorrow should be quiet

sfxmum · 05/09/2011 17:16

copper what kind of eyeballs? dh winces when I tell him I used to eat fish eyesGrin

Kewcumber · 05/09/2011 17:21

there is a very long queue to get into the Kew retail park - I suspect its becasue 80% of them are pretending that the "road closed - diversion" signs are just pretending. I surmise this because M&S is no busier than normal and there is also a big queue to get out of the retail park Grin
