Tilly - don't worry about this morning, sounds like you've got enough to deal with. Hope the poor fella gets better soon

Steppie - sorry to hear you've all been ill, that is rough. Thanks for the encouragement. The matter of cost to be considered too as it won't be a cheap wkend. Plus I don't know the other 2 girls going so part of me is thinking I'd much rather spend that sort of money with people I know, IYKWIM. But if I went I'm sure I'd love it anyway. Decisions, decisions!

sfx - yes to meet up Smile any ideas when/where?

tillyfernackerpants · 11/01/2011 16:57

thanks vbus, seems a bit better, so fingers crossed its over with!

Btw can anyone help me here? V boring topic I'm afraid, though I know its a touchy subject with a couple of you Wink

tilly everyone seems to have combi these days as I understand it means you can have hot water all the time, but maybe I am wrong

question please I made tuna mayo&sweetcorn for dd this morning for he sandwich left over filling is in fridge, would you still use it for tomorrow? she is insisting on having it again

tillyfernackerpants · 11/01/2011 17:35

sfx, thanks, you do get hot water all the time with a comib & they're supposedly more economical to run but 3rd quote person just seemed to think it wouldn't suit our house Hmm

Re tuna mayo, I would taste it in the morning but would probably use it. Not after tomorrow though!

OP posts:
sfxmum · 11/01/2011 17:55

whenever I have had combi boilers they have been fine, with the current one the issue seems to be that the fitting was not done properly, we got some money back from building people toward repairs, and obviously general incompetence spotting a relatively minor but ultimately costly problem

thank re tuna I meant to have it today but did not have lunch at home, don't like risking stuff like that with little ones

and how is DS2?

dd has been a ravenous child eating non stop since pick up time

UptoapointLordCopper · 11/01/2011 18:12

Tilly - we don't have combi. I seem to recall you need to consider water pressure issue - can't use certain types of power shower with combi.

Re tuna mayonnaise - I probably won't use it, otherwise I'd spend the whole day waiting for phone call from school to say DS1 has food poisoning. Do I win the prize for paranoia? Grin

vbus - go ski and make new friends! What's not to like?

Dinner a quick affair. Kids starving, it would seem. DS2 displaying credible chopsticks skill, not least in the spearing department. Smile

Kewcumber · 11/01/2011 19:23

yes I use tuna mayo for several days running assuming nuked industrial bought mayo not home made. Mayo won;t go offin a few days kept in the fridge neither will canned (therefore cooked) tuna.

vbus · 12/01/2011 13:43

Hello all

Tilly - we had combi in last house and while it was good, it did break down (fan stopped working) but it took 3 plumbers to figure out this problem. But I would say they put it in loft to save space but it was the worst place to put it as it took forever to get any hot water through taps in bathroom and especially in kitchen 2 floors below. Energy assessor said it was incredibly inefficient & costly for that reason alone. We don't have one now but as long as I put water on in am and tea time then I have enough hot water for the day for everyone. But tank takes up lots of rm. Pros and cons!

I'm going to brave Ikea tom. Kitchen planning seems to be comsuming all my spare time atm now that Ds1 out of the house. He is loving being at school all day especially lunch, I'm Shock that he's eaten everything so far, his appetite has progressed from that of a mouse to a cat Grin

tillyfernackerpants · 12/01/2011 14:15

Thanks vbus. Ours is currently ancient so needs doing. But we've had someone round to assess for an energy grant & it seems we're eligible Shock. But it does mean we wouldn't be getting a combi after all, seems though its 50/50 re people's preference for a combi!

Good that ds1 is enjoying school so much! I think eating with friends does make a huge difference to what they eat at lunchtime

Baked 60 cupcakes. Headache now. Running out of paracetamol. What good is cupcake when you don't have paracetamol. HmmGrin

sfxmum · 12/01/2011 15:52

hello

no tuna, I am a chicken

vbus good to know ds is eating better and enjoying school

tilly good news on grant, I am sure they will be able to advise on boiler, just go for a common model so as not t confuse future plumbers
Wink
I am getting to the stage where dd does not want me around much when she is with her friends 'go now' 'I can handle it' phrases of choice now

spend day with my aunt had not seen her since her birthday nearly a month ago

will soon pick up dd from Mandarin class I expect she would not have have learnt more than nihao
I feel so west London pushy parent type, until I see the real ones that is

sfxmum · 12/01/2011 15:57

copper are you doing a bake sale at school?

Kewcumber · 12/01/2011 15:59

GOT TAKEN TO GLASSHOUSE FOR LUNCH FOR mA'S BIRTHDAY BY MY SISTER TODAY. yUM. (EVEN WITH VERY SORE THROAT STILL YUM)

Bollocks can;t be bothered to retypr in lower case...

sfxmum · 12/01/2011 16:49

if you have something to shout about by all means do Grin

UptoapointLordCopper · 12/01/2011 17:44

sfx - not bake sale. DS1's birthday. Little cakes for little friends. I never bake for cake sale - it seems to me that if the aim is to make money then one should buy low and sell high, so I always try to get one of those 12 minicupcakes for 1 pound thingies from Iceland or something and they sell them 50p per cupcake. Grin It makes financial sense.

Mandarin class Shock.

UptoapointLordCopper · 12/01/2011 17:52

I think I'm going to have to stay off that tiger mother thread. People do say the most awful generalised things about Chinese people without batting(?) an eyelid.

sfxmum · 12/01/2011 20:25

what is that thread? off line for most of the day

I haven't baked for anything this year the bake sale tend to be quite yummy

Kewcumber · 12/01/2011 20:41

bake sales do make me laugh stay away form making fruit cake (mother mothers tendancey to make) which costs £5+ to make and they sell for £3. Why not just donate the £5 and save yourself the time Confused

Kewcumber · 12/01/2011 20:44

I think (wihout having read the thread) that often cultures (not races) do have identifying aspects but the strange thing is when you pick the culture apart into indivual people they are all as different from each other as any other culture. I'm not sure how that can be and yet IMVHO it is.

I am sure you could make some broad generalisations about british culture which would ring true and yet if you tried to apply it to individuals on this thread (furriners excepted Grin) it would probably be wrong more often than it is right

UptoapointLordCopper · 12/01/2011 21:05

That's the funny thing about stereotypes, I suppose. Exceptions prove the rule?? That's a most puzzling expression at the best of times ... Still, it's most annoying to hear/read people talk about "Chinese people do this you know. Very hard people. Don't have sympathy with the weak you know. I'm glad I don't live in China, you know. It's because they are poor you know" etc. It does drive you up the wall after a while. Still, it hasn't descended to mentioning the Nazis yet, so maybe there's a long way to go yet in the thread. But I will stay away and watch Midsomer murder instead. Far less stereotyping. Grin AT least if small villages are like that there'll be no one left now.

UptoapointLordCopper · 12/01/2011 21:06

Cake sale = visit the co-op shop day, as far as I'm concern.

sfxmum · 12/01/2011 21:12

they are godless therefore have no moral compass yes to be expected Hmm

I like the Portuguese stereotypes really it lowers expectations in my favour, what's not to like

UptoapointLordCopper · 12/01/2011 21:42

Was just about to make stereotypical comment about Chinese people and gods but came to my senses in time. Grin

Portugal in the news today. And cafe at work sells Portugese egg tarts - actually not too bad.

Now must go and wrap up DS1's birthday presents.

UptoapointLordCopper · 12/01/2011 21:45

Night out candidate: La Cantina in Ealing. Went for lunch. Nice food. Nice service. Nice to kids.

sfxmum · 13/01/2011 13:25

copper that sounds like a nice enough place
and its not custard/egg tarts its Pasteis de nata Grin best from Lisboa PAtisserie in Notting Hill here

total ineffectual today just can't focus at all
