Durch die Strassen auf und nieder
leuchten die Laternen wieder:
rote, gelbe, grüne, blaue,
Lieber Martin, komm und schaue!

Wie die Blumen in dem Garten
blühn Laternen aller Arten:
rote, gelbe, grüne, blaue,
Lieber Martin, komm und schaue!

Und wir gehen lange Strecken
mit Laternen an den Stecken
rote, gelbe, grüne, blaue,
Lieber Martin, komm und schaue!

It is that time of the year again. Check your lanterns, get enough batteries, start the Bastelaktion.

Ernest, that reminds of the primary school in Berlin. It was end of term and report cards were being given out. I was waiting outside the door to ds's class and as the door opened a stream of howling red faced dc filed out - all crying becuase they had 4's on their reports. About 3 or 4 dc (including ds) came out with good reports. There were only 16 dc in that class and the 4 with decent reports had their parents to help at home, the others had working parents or parents who didn't speak German or 'do' integration'. It was sad really.

Trouble is most of the dc who came out crying had dossed about all term, had never done homework, made sure they had as many scraps and fights as they could at break time and never learned for tests so I didn't get why they were surprised at the bad grades!

Canella, my 2 had braces in Berlin but we gave up after a few months. We also had teh pay 100 Euro every 3 months system which we would have got back if we had completed the treatment. Now a couple of years later their teeth all fit in fine and are straight naturally so sometimes I wonder if the braces really are a must. You see every other primary school dc had braces in Berlin and in dd's primary in Hannover too. In my day only really 'goofy' dc got braces, most of them nowadays don't look as if they need them even.

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 09:35

bl* braces, dd needs them but didn't get on with the jaw widening one they fixed into the upper jaw. So got that removed. I think something still needs to be done about it - soon really, but keep putting it off. Think she needs the same torture instrument but a removable one so she can eat, speak normally, also clean teeth properly, just have it in the rest of the time.

What a pain.

I think British people have a reputation the world over for bad teeth so although I agree at school almost no one I can rmember wore a brace, maybe that was not because no one else needed one.

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 09:42

glasses too. When I was at primary school, I can't remember in any of the schools I was at that anyone in my class wore glasses. In Germany I notice that it#s really quite common among primary school children - even at kindergarten.

I just think they're more on the ball about testing and picking up on this kind of thing and people didn't bother with it so much when we were younger (also maybe it wasn't all covered)

MmeGoblindt · 27/10/2009 10:00

No experience of glasses and braces for DC although DS did say to us last week at the dinner table, 'It is important to eat up all your vegetables so that your teeth don't grow really squint, like Granny's teeth'.

Mum's face was like

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 10:02

LOL

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 10:03

so who do you think is going to win xfactor this time round ML? Do you think it'll be the terrible two?

MmeGoblindt · 27/10/2009 10:06

God, I hope not. I will stop watching if they win.

I think that Joe has a good chance, as he is cute (so will get the girlie vote) but also has a good voice. In comparison Lloyd is also cute but can't sing for toffee.

Stacey is too hyper. How did someone describe her last week? Like a hamster on speed.

Lucie is good but I find her a bit bland.

Daryl and the Afro guy, Rachael are all too old, the teenies are not going to vote for them.

What about you? Who would you vote for if you could?

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 10:11

I'm not really taken with any of them. It's not like I dislike them but no one grabs me. I find them all a bit bland onstage.

What is with Stacy?! She's hilarious. Can you imagine her ds getting a word in edgeways? I think her voice has something special but it's the same. Same goes for Joe, I think, he's a nice lad (could have done with some orthodontist visits) but it is always the same when he performs.

Rachel is actually not that old. Did you know she is only 18 but she comes across so old, doesn't she?

I like Llöyd, nice looking young blonde boy from the hills but something annoys me about his singing voice (not just that he isn't gettingi t right, the tone of it).

Hmm I think either Stacy or the twins will win because they stand out as personalities. The others you'd forget immediately if they were offscreen for a week.

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 10:13

Tbh with you, I would really really like Danyl to leave. partly to annoy Simon, I'll admit but also because I find him such a fake.

MmeGoblindt · 27/10/2009 10:16

Saying that, I blubbed like a baby when Joe sang 'Dance with my father' at his first audition.

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 10:18

did you, you old softie? He is nice, has a nice voice and so on but it all sounds like his first audition, doesn't it, every week?

So you're standing by Joe, are you? Well I wouldn't begrudge him winning it. Lucy I also like, I think she#s getting into the swing of it but I don't know if she draws a crowd.

Another Welshie. speaking of which, what has happened to Frosch, we haven't heard from her in ages, have we? Might have to post a thread and draw her back out of the woodwork.

MmeGoblindt · 27/10/2009 11:01

I am such a wimp. I cry at the drop of a hat.

I don't know really, there is none of them realy proper superstar material, is there? Even Joe is a bit too nice.

yes, go find Frosch. I wonder how she is getting on.

Going to order an iPod for my Mum's birthday on Sunday. It is her 65th so I thought I would get her something that she will really appreciate. With the pound/eu exchange rate, they are cheap in UK.

MmeGoblindt · 27/10/2009 11:55

Ernesto
Step away from the AIBU thread now. You know better. Now we have sorted it all out and agreed that YANBU and should Have Words. Anyone who comes on now to say YABU has not read the thread.

ErnestTheBavarian · 27/10/2009 12:02

thanks ml You're right.

bloody woman.

Maybe I'm too english, but I do find it rather odd after the lesson for her to be at the shower right next to ds - this is a big communal shower room, but with storage dividers down the centre, so 2 half sort of screened, plus 4 showers with glass partitions at end, there must be almost 30 showers in there, and she stands at the one right next to him, and peels her cossie down, lathering up tits right there! OK, plenty of women do half or totally strip, and to be fair, ds is totally oblivious to it, but I feel a bit uncomfortable to say the least, as it's hard to look at ds and not see her. Even if she were 2 showers further along, or on the other side. Don't like it.

Bit of modesty and decorum

We have as usual left the booking of our holiday way too late, and I've spent all morning contacting hotels, only for them all to get back to me saying they're fully booked yikes

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 13:07

yes bl* useless bint, call herself a swimming instructor. While you're at it I think you should complain about her getting her boobs out for a lather.

She will keep you forever in loving memory.

MmeGoblindt · 27/10/2009 17:20

Hmm, the shower thing is probably us being British, but she could go a wee bit further away I guess.

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 17:24

but this getting up close thing is German togetherness or something, isn't it? You can park in a big huge empty parking lot (i.e. Ikea first thing in the morning). When you come out, the 4 other cars which have since arrived have parked all around your car in the surrounding spaces, scorning the vastness of the lot. I would never park right next to the only other car in an otherwise empty parking lot (probably too scared of actually denting it...). I'm crap at parking though, I like big empty spaces

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 17:26

what's happened to your profile ML?

MmeGoblindt · 27/10/2009 17:30

Ah, yes. That is strange isn't it? The parking, I mean not my profile. I need to move it to my Halloween name.

Are you guys not namechanging?

ZZzzzzzzombie would be good

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 17:31

ah very good. Just not feeling inspired about Halloween. Your names are always so good.

MmeGoblindt · 27/10/2009 17:33

Have moved my profile.

I thought up a really good one for Xmas one night when I could not sleep. Wish I had written it down.

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 17:34

LOl
I'm not sleeping either, pain in the neck

MmeGoblindt · 28/10/2009 20:00

Ooooh, I am all of a dither. I am on the shortlist for the Halloween Name competition.

Feel strangely chuffed, even though I will never win it as I never win competitions. I love MaryMotherOfCheeses name.

ZZZenAgain · 29/10/2009 11:53

what is she calling herself?

Not ever really abreast of the name changes myself but yours are always good. (I hope you win it, so there). Is there a prize?

hupa · 29/10/2009 12:05

Well done for getting on the shortlist MmeLindt. Some of the name changes have been really good this year.

admylin - have you heard anything definite about the flat?

We got back from holiday at the weekend. We had a great time, but I was really shocked at the number of overweight children. Most of them were Italian and the boys in particular were not just a bit overweight, but clearly obese. I suppose it´s much more noticeable when everyone is in the pool rather than wrapped up in winter clothes, but I really don´t remember seeing so many overweight children here in the Freibäder in the summer.

Ernest - its probably a bit late now, but I´d definitely try to sort out 1:1 lessons. Dd did a 10 week course´last year and couldn´t swim at the end of it, but later on holiday managed to get her Seepferdchen after just three 1:1 lessons.
