very impressed at 17 years too!

yes, well, so you get what I'm talking about then SB

dooneygirl · 21/06/2009 04:38

You guys really freaked me out with all your polenta with veggies and winkings. I thought you could read my mind that I had it 2 nights ago, and then I thought I posted it, but I don't think I did, so I'll go back to being freaked out.

DH went to go get some more of the really good cheese today. The cheese place is in a wine shop, and he wanted to get some wine, too. I was talking to the wine person, and she actually directed me to a wine that I don't hate. I don't love it, but DH got a bottle, and I might actually have a small glass with him.

17 years is so long. We're only at 11 in September, and DH cooked for the first 5, because I was really bad at it, so I have a whole lot longer to go before I boycott cooking.

jabberwocky · 21/06/2009 05:10

lol, dooney, I actually really like polenta with roasted veggies but the rest of my family hates it. But knowing that you didn't cook for the first 5 years gives me hope that someday I may actually cook and my family will eat it. "The Splendid Table" is one of my favorite radio shows

We are at 8 official years, together for 10 which still makes me a little.

SuperBunny · 21/06/2009 16:58

I think I have enjoyed polenta in restaurants so I know it can be made to be delicious. I just can't do that. The Splendid Table sounds interesting.

What kid of wine is it, Dooney?

It's on NPR. You can listen on the web too. Lynn Rossetta Caspar or something like that is the host. She is amazing!

nooka · 21/06/2009 20:52

dh and I had 15yrs for round one and we are on about 18mths on round two (with two years as sort of boyfriend/girlfriend +parents in the middle when we lived apart). To be honest that just makes me feel really old, but we did start quite young (we met at university).

I guess in that time I've done most of the cooking, but dh has come a long way from the ready meals which were about all he could cope with when we met (he wasn't that keen on eating anything other than ready meals in those days either). Now he's the SAHP he does pretty much everything, and has a great line in breakfasts and BBQs

kickassangel · 21/06/2009 21:17

shall i really freak you out? dh & are have been married 17 years, met through friends 19 yrs ago, and only started going out 17 1/2 yrs ago!!

polenta is bleugh!! like roasted veggies though.

had roast beef with yorkshire puds & roast pots TWICE today, followed by strawberries & cream TWICE. only one lot of pimms though, cos i was driving!! turned into lovely sunny afternoon, during which i dozed on the sofa & dd ran round the garden with her cousins, and birds twittered in the trees.

however, i have realised that i haven't visited anyone who isn't within ear shot of planes, even if not directly on a take off/landing flight path!! england is def overcrowded.

nooka · 21/06/2009 21:22

Sounds very nice. We went camping this weekend. 30 minutes drive into the middle of nowhere. Lovely!

dooneygirl · 22/06/2009 02:38

Oh, I couldn't cook at all. My mom had 7 meals that she rotated, tacos (ground beef with lettuce and cheese) nachos, (see tacos), pork chops in a crock pot with a can of soup dumped on top, steak that she'd put in a pie plate with nothing on it and broil it, spaghetti, roast chicken with nothing on it, and the best of all, breaded chicken that she cooked in the microwave. All our veggies were frozen or came from a can, and I'd never had things like onions, peppers, garlic, black beans and so many other things until I got married. I was really bad at cooking. Poor, poor DH.

The wine was a white one that the little wine shop place made themselves. I don't think there's a chance I'd ever like red wine, and I don't like most wine, because it is fine when it first hits your mouth, but then has this really taste. DH says it is the "dry" in wine, but he doesn't know anything about wine, and I'm not sure if I believe him or not.

Glad you enjoyed camping, nooka. I don't like it at all, and I'm pretty sure we're going to start going whether I like it or not. DH says I don't have to go, though, but I'd feel like a defective parent if I didn't.

nooka · 22/06/2009 02:40

Well that was dh's postion too - in fact he said he would never ever camp. But now it's him saying lets go again next weekend! So you never know

SuperBunny · 22/06/2009 02:49

I love camping!

Dooney, your mum's meals sound, erm, delicious. ExMIL used to make pasta with a can of condensed soup on it and be delighted at her delicious meal. My mum is a great cook, I was lucky. My Dad too.

It's the 21st century. There's a reason that hotels were invented!!!!! (That and I don't do bugs. I'm quite the big baby.)

You don't know the meaning of the word rubbery until you've tried microwaved chicken.

SuperBunny · 22/06/2009 03:04

Sadly, being vegetarian means I will miss out on that delicacy. I am terribly disappointed. I will try it in another lifetime.

OP posts:
dooneygirl · 22/06/2009 03:14

I wish I could have claimed vegetarian back then.

We're on day 4 of veggie meals in a row. Except for none of us liked tonight's dinner. I'm really ticked about that, since I went to all the trouble of making fresh pasta, and most of it is gone, because nobody liked the dinner. I haven't had that big of a miss on a recipe I thought would be good in a very long time.

SuperBunny · 22/06/2009 03:23

Ooo, a friend just emailed and wants to take me out for dinner. He cried earlier when I told him I was leaving and then, after I had walked down the street, he followed me in his car and pulled up and asked if I wanted a ride. I knew it was completely out of his way to take me so I said no and he looked sad and then I felt guilty.

So, now I have this email that is a bit gushing and says he's saddened and he wants to see me and... Why is he asking me out now? I fancied him for over a year!

OP posts:
SuperBunny · 22/06/2009 03:25

Sorry about tonight's dinner, Dooney. What was it? Homemade pasta sounds lovely. I made it once but it was such a palava and not noticeably better than good shop bought stuff so I haven't done it again.

SuperBunny · 22/06/2009 03:31

Also:

2 weeks ago, there was a note on my car from an ex BF from 2 yrs ago wanting to see me.

Indiana Man from last summer has made contact again.

WHY? WHY are they appearing out of nowhere for no reason now I am leaving? Neither of them knew. One of them still doesn't. But it's freaked me out a bit. Why are there men crawling out of the woodwork NOW of all times?

And dinner invitations from Singing man and drink requests from Yellow Mustang Man and 'let's get together' from other singing man.

And why is it only men who suddenly desire my company? I am not inundated with date requests from my other friends.

Sorry, I promised myself that I wouldn't post on this thread like this anymore

And now I am blubbing like a little girl! [over emotional, highly sensitive and best given a wide berth emoticon]

dooneygirl · 22/06/2009 03:57

Oh, crap, Bunny. I got distracted by shiny things that sparkle on Etsy.

Are you doing okay now? I wish I could help you with all your man problems, but I've never had that many fall over me in my life, much less at one time.

jabberwocky · 22/06/2009 04:07

Oh, SB it seems that it always happens like that. Perhaps you are just putting out different vibes and that will carry over once you're back home.

SuperBunny · 22/06/2009 04:14

I don't think they are falling over me, I just think the cosmos is trying to make my head explode

Thanks for the back pats and sympathy.

Where's mananny gone?

And how are the expat babies?

I am going to wrap my hand in clingfilm now.

Oh dear! Life can be very strange at times I guess! Love the names though

mananny · 22/06/2009 17:21

I am here, been working overnights lots with the little fella who is allergic to soy and milk, poor bubba. Have now succeeded in getting him to sleep 8pm-230am and again from 3am-630am. Considering he was so unwell for so long and all messed up because of major pain and sleep deprivation, we are all delighted at his progress! He's 11 weeks old this week and I am hoping to have him sleep from 8pm til 630am before I leave in 2 weeks. My new bosses had their baby last Wednesday and she is super teeny and cute, I am looking forward to starting my next adventures with her and her family.

I'm so sad to be leaving my twins but I am happier now I know I will see them in September and again in November, and I have every intention of spoiling them rotten from afar. My MB and DB have said when they come to the UK next year they will send the twins to me for a week, so I am really happy to know we will see each other every few months. Little Miss in particular is having a hard time with my leaving, she keeps geting all wobbly lipped and saying she's going to "be sad for always if you go on the plane"...

Anyhoo, all that talk of food has made me starving... I'm going to rummage around in the fridge and see what falls out.

kickassangel · 22/06/2009 20:30

sb, tis not the cosmos, tis the crapness of men. they can't resist a chick who doesn't require commitment! [cynic]

i am now looking forward to getting back home. dh sounded all sad & lonely tonight when he said 'i need you to take care of me'.
he's a bit of a loner at times, but i think he's realised that living alone would not be any fun, and that perhaps it's nice to have me around, even if i am a bit naggy sometimes

it's all change round here. how are we going to sum this thread up when we move on to another one? apart from mentioning food & handbags, of course!

mananny · 22/06/2009 20:34

Aaawww bless your DH kickass

It is all change indeed. I think the next thread should be called "(Amster)Damn I wish I was still accross the pond!"
