You could make a very British tray bake. Millionaires shortbread, or Tiffin. Don't know if you would get the ingredients there, unless you went to the English shop.

Or just a plain apple pie?

TheGabster · 23/11/2008 20:10

Sorry you are poorly Admylin. Will keep my fingers crossed about the job. Re: Turkey crown - I used to get this but have never managed to find one in DE but you may have more luck up there.

Please don't be down. Go to your GP. Plus Dr Gabster is here. Winter is coming and with everything else its bound to make you a bit low. Yes, Alcohol is only temp and really makes things worse (but I can't give it up!!). You can't take St Johns Wart with pill because it affects hormones (I find chocolate much more effective). If you love Xmas (sounds like you do) then why don't you focus on that. Get the deccies together and buy some more and plan everything. Sod the miserable bugger DH and just make some plans that will give you something to look forward to instead of focussing on the Xmas in the UK you will miss.

Plan an outing with the DCs a couple of days a week - something you all enjoy.

Or do something healthy - cycling, swimming or go to the gym. Release some nice endorphines into your system and get an natural high.

When all else fails come and have a vent on MN. We all know what its like.

TheGabster · 23/11/2008 20:12

Blimey - you all posted inbetween cos I took so long to write that!!!!

TheGabster · 23/11/2008 20:13

Right

Lindt - Kewl you're getting a dog! I think about 1,000 Eur is the going rate for a pedigree puppy, give or take a bit for different breeds. Not sure what that is in CHF. We paid less for our GSD - but he was a reject (retained testical) and I swear would have ended up being dumped if we had not bought him because he was unwanted and 4mo when we bought him (most are reserved by 3wks old and in new homes by 8wks).

Cakes - make little fairy cakes with icing on or muffins in little cake cases. Germans love 'em!

MmeLindt · 23/11/2008 20:21

Gabster
2000chf is about 1500?. I had looked online and was expecting about 700 - 800 ? but that is just a good bit too much for us. I am not bothered if it has a great pedigree, as long as it is sweet-natured and doesn't shed (DH's main worried)

Your poor wee doggy, being rejected. Thank goodness you came along when you did.

TheGabster · 23/11/2008 20:45

Westies don't shed (PIL have always had them) but that seems an awful lot. Maybe worth a dip over the border into France again ....? They can be aggressive sometimes though - they are yappy but not as bad as yorkies if you want a small dog.

I always wanted a Beagle but they are up for the chase anytime of day or night - not good pets if you live in a town.

Pleased to say DS is tonnes better today. Been gorgeous all day - love him.

MmeLindt · 23/11/2008 21:11

DD had a bad experience with a beagle last summer so I don't think that we will go for one. The dog was a bit mad though, belongs to friends of DH. It is the second beagle that the family have had and both have been daft. Probably to do with the family more than the dogs. DH would not have a beagle, I am sure.

TheGabster · 24/11/2008 08:01

How about one of this Jägd things - like small a labrador. Here I am assuming you want a small dog.

Have you had one before?

I would not get such a big dog with the next one I must admit. He is hard work, although we are very lucky he has a fab temperament.

MmeLindt · 24/11/2008 08:24

We don't want a big dog, but I don't want a rat either. Not fond of Dackels

What do you mean by a Jägd dog? A springer spaniel?

admylin · 24/11/2008 10:33

Thanks drGabster, good advice!

So, only 1 week to decide - do I go out and buy one of those choccie/sweety advent calenders or do I make one? I don't have much to do as I have a home made one but just need to fill it times 2! It's a long string of tinsel with pegs attached to it that I can hang little sweets or presents on. Trouble is nowadays, finding 24 little presents (actually 48) costs a fortune so it's going to be mimi haribo bags or such like. H nagged last time I made it because he thought it was too many sweets all hanging up like that, nag moan nag.. (ha, he doesn't see what his dd gets through on a normal week)

ZZZen · 24/11/2008 11:20

Got a playmobil one with unicorns and fairies (! nothing to do with Christmas!) on it. Have to watch dd's weight a bit so decided against chocolate and the ones you make yourself are a pita, so many little gifts to find IYAM.

How are you feeling today admylin? I think what you need is a laugh. I don't think you get many these days. What takes me off my daily woes when they're bogging me down is a light-hearted film. I used to find that "Big Greek Wedding" or whatever it's actually called "big fat Greek wedding?" quite good for that.

I can never remember where in Hannover you are but maybe you could look around for an English carol service at an international church. They hold them early in Germany, beginning of Dec I think. Nice for you and the kids and there is always mulled wine and a little candle to hold. Little things like that can help you through winter/Christmas time.

Going to check out what happened to you on the thread of Doom.

Shiner · 24/11/2008 11:23

Hi Admylin,
I've been wondering the same, whether to make an advent calendar or to buy one. I would love to make it myself, but yup, 48 little presents is expensive...

As an alternative I thought I might make every other one just a picture of something seasonal - when I was small, my advent calendar was only ever the picture sort, and it was still fun to open the door and see what picture it was for that day. I have some photos of my parents from years ago each wearing a Santa hat, so I could print those out and roll them up into one "day". If I get myself into gear, I might steal their favourite toys, and take photos of them in funny places (on top of a Christmas tree, peeping out of a half-wrapped present, with Christmas baubles hanging from their ears) to expand the collection. Other ideas are a couple of Playmobile figures (for the 6th Dec), a little hairclip or glitter pen/stickers, but the rest will be good old Haribo

admylin · 24/11/2008 11:38

Good ideas shiner, wish I had a printer now. I always had a picture one when we were small - dc expect somuch nowadays don't they. I always remember my grandad telling us how he got an orange and some nuts and maybe a pair of gloves for Christmas! Imagine, that wouldn't even suit our dc for Nikolaus let alone Christmas day!

Yoe are right ZZZen, I need cheered up and I sometimes watch comedy on Youtube but the computer keeps sticking - top of list of things we need is a new one!

ZZZen · 24/11/2008 12:28

Do you ever do defragmentieren or hard disc Reinigung admylin? Seems to make a difference for a while. It's often those internet files that slow mine up

TheGabster · 24/11/2008 12:33

I just ordered a felt advent calender from Schlecker and was going to fill it with miniature bits and pieces. Its hard when you don't want to use chocolate. Am gob smacked actually cos schlecker are now charging for delivery. Pigs.

Lindt - not sure what they are called but neighbour looks after this jägdhund. Its a lab cross anyway but looks like a half-size lab with a gorgeous face and short hair (so no moulting) and a gorgeous disposition. Just wants to run and play all the time and its 5yrs old! Quite obedient/easy to train too. I will ask her what the bread is officially called. Have to go over there later anyway.

Oh, and Admylin - picture me at 3am trying to give screaming baby calpol without turning more than night light on, so pouring half bottle over stupid spoon into basket of clean laundery, pouring spoonful half into babes mouth and other half down his front. Then realising have other half of bottle all down my leg. Do you have a smile now? Had to laugh even at that time in the morning.

ZZZen · 24/11/2008 12:41

Is he feeling a bit perkier Dr. Gab? I always ran to the doctor when dd was that small. I just didn't have enough experience to be relaxed about it. Seemed whenever she came down with something truly nasty that required antibiotics she cleverly managed to do it at the weekend

I was thinking about a terrier for dd actually. Supposed to be very intelligent dogs, enjoy playing games etc. Didn't know you had to wipe their bums though. Don't fancy that. Is that all terriers, was thinking of a jack Russel

MmeLindt · 24/11/2008 12:56

Gabster
LOL, but I bet you smelt nicely of Calpol

I am going to buy a couple of picture calenders as they already got a chocy one from a friend. One year they had 3 choc calenders so I have told the GPs not to bother this year. They did not get aroudn to opening them all some days.

We might have a puppy! I asked on of the doggy mums on the school run and she knows someone who has King Charles/Maltese cross. I goooogled and came up with this website

I can hear you all say awwwwwwwwwwwwww from here

Shiner · 24/11/2008 12:59

If cash is short, but the list is long...have you tried Freecycle? My mother recently had a clearout and got rid of loads of perfectly decent furniture and other stuff via Freecycle; she was pleased because she didn't have the bother of selling it or transporting it, and she always got a nice email afterwards thanking her for the item (which generally made her day). She now moderates the local group, and says that there is an unbelievable range of stuff on offer. I assume the german branch is similar.

And if anyone needs a giggle, have you read this thread?

Shiner · 24/11/2008 13:03
ZZZen · 24/11/2008 13:03

I always wanted a King Charles Cocker Spaniel (or 3 or 4)

Will have a look at the funny thread

MmeLindt · 24/11/2008 13:04

Don't have a look at Shiner's (fantastically linked) thread unless you have an hour or two to spare. I sat up until 1am last night reading it. Very very funny.

ZZZen · 24/11/2008 13:08

Gosh yes just seen 240 posts or soemthing. No TIME. Never any time at the moment for anything really.

Sounds like just the thing for admylin. Take her mind off maths and German.

ZZZen · 24/11/2008 13:08

is she still dancing, do you think?

TheGabster · 24/11/2008 13:13

ooooh - love KG Spaniels. So soppy. Not sure about bottom wiping but you do have to make sure you keep their ears clean - prone to infections as far as I remember.

Terriers can be great family pets - always want to play and run/walkies BUT have lots of energy so not ideal if they have to be left for regular long periods in a house full of nice tasty, chewy furniture if you know what I mean.

Thanks all, yes DS is doing better. He had a bad night last night but not sure how much was tooth pain and how much was wanting mummy and daddy to come and get him back to sleep as he couldn't be bothered to do it on his own. He is asleep now (thank the lord) hence the copious amounts of MNing

MmeLindt · 24/11/2008 13:20

Did you look at my link? Did you did you?

Go on, you will want one too.

A bit overstimulated, too much coffee today, methinks
