I see all these threads for Aussie people and thought we should have our own thread too. Not sure why, I just felt the need to make us feel special too!

So, who's stateside and where are you?

I'll start:

Mamama - in Chicago

Welcome TwinMommy!

Ahem, Maryland was in the Confederacy however as it was a border state I will allow twirl and mamama to prevail as the War between the States (or, as some people in the South still refer to it "the recent unpleasantness") is probably rather far removed from the British sphere

nannyk · 05/07/2007 20:46

Hi twinmummyto be

I'm a twin nanny in Boston, it's nice to see someone else in my neck of the woods. When are you due? The twins I look after are 20 months now, they were barely 10 weeks when I started with them!

mamama · 06/07/2007 04:08

lol @ Jabberwocky & our little disagreement over MD. I think you are right now but am happy to leave the 'recent unpleasantness' in the past

kiskidee · 06/07/2007 05:10

do i count as i used to live in the South?

Louiville, Kentucky to be exact. border Southern state which remained neutral. I've heard deep southerners call it, treacherous.

kiskidee · 06/07/2007 05:12

i know you hate hot Cali. we've had lots of 'cool' over here. forecast 16 degrees for me today but would you still trade it in for all the rain we've also been having?

mamama · 06/07/2007 05:12

Oh, ok kiskidee, you count. And Kentucky is definitely the South, right Jabberwocky?

OP posts:
jabberwocky · 06/07/2007 11:41

It is the South but kiskidee is absolutely right. I have heard mutterings as recently as a few years ago about the "treacherous" neutrality of KY, lol.

Twirl · 06/07/2007 19:02

Oh dear - didn't mean to cause trouble Mamama and Jabberwocky.....

Welcome Twinmummy !
Colinandcaitlinsmommy - we have a short trip to Boston over the summer and we have booked the Jurys Hotel - there was a 15% off deal on Expedia. It looked really nice.
Weather here continues to be unbearable and I now have the added stress of next-doors house demolition which takes place next week. I found out by accident yesterday!!! As I have 2 little-uns am really worried about lead dust that will be created when they bring the house down. Does anyone know anything about this or any precautions I should be taking to protect the kids? The house is only about 15ft away.
I'm loving the misters Califrau .

Oh Twirl, someone just asked the same thing on my local parenting group's forum - if there are any helpful responses I'll let you know. So far, the only response said to mop the floors & window sills every day to pick up any lead dust before it spreads to far. And to avoid a/c which will blow the lead dust around the house.

jabberwocky · 07/07/2007 01:07

lol at twirl

colinandcaitlinsmommy · 07/07/2007 01:16

Do you not have A/C, then Cali? I thought it was standard issue in California. (Feeling sorry for Califrau). It must be one stellar heat wave the west is having, because it is supposed to get to 102 here next week. It rarely breaks 100 here.

Twirl--it looks lovely, but it took me a long time to get over laughing while looking at it, because DH would NEVER pay that much for a hotel. I'm trying to encourage him to be a bit "frivolous" this vacation as his mom died, and it is the first trip we are taking after that. We've paid off bills with the money she left, and completed college funds, and he did end up taking his promotion after all, but none of those factors moved him in any way. I found one about 25 min outside of Boston that is actually a "suite" hotel, and that looks pretty good, because we'll have a bedroom for us and one for the kids. I loathe sleeping with my kids in the same room, because they roll, moan, snore, talk and cry in their sleep all night long.

Sorry to hear about the demo. Hope everything goes well. No experience in that field.

tinpot · 07/07/2007 01:21

Hey! Haven't been keeping up with the thread but just had a read through and skimmed a few posts. Re: mosquitos - I was also bitten very badly when I first arrived in NC. I think they can sense foreign blood! Anyway, after some research I found that taking a vitamin B1 (thiamin) supplement every day is supposed to help - I tried it the next year and it did make a big difference. Something about it giving off a low odour that repels the little blighters!

Weather here is very hot but am I the only one that loves it? I do only move between the pool and my air conditioned home though. We went to California a few weeks ago and I thought the weather was perfect there (San Diego and LA areas). I guess if you move inland then it's the triple digit temperatures.

Anyway, I have ds (4) and dd (1) and sadly we are moving back to the UK in only 4 weeks. Love life in US and wish we could stay longer. Will try to post more before we go.

OP posts:
colinandcaitlinsmommy · 07/07/2007 02:53

I have 3 requirements for a house. One is it has to have a dishwasher. The other is it has to have a hallway. And the third is no matter where we live, I will not buy a house unless it has central air.

I'm sitting here feeling guilty. DH has taken the kids outside, as they insisted on going out. (Today was the 1st day since we moved back that I've left both the kids with someone other than DH and gone and done something myself, so they were inside all day) It isn't that bad outside, but I'm staying in here anyway.

Oh, I don't envy you house prices down there. One of the things I was worried about was we will get sent anywhere in the U. S. when DH finishes training and gets promoted. House prices aren't great here, but we'd be so hating it if we ended up in Cali or NYC. They think about things like that, and send single people to places like those, or people who already live in areas with highly elevated house prices because they don't want to put hardships on people and make it so you can't afford a decent house even though you make a pretty good wage.

I just realized, I took the little monsters blueberry picking this morning. They did get out of the house. I think the joy of me getting time without them clouded my brain.

mamama · 07/07/2007 03:20

Blueberry picking? Sounds lovely. NOthing like that round here

We live at the very, very edge of the city limit of a suburb of Portland. It takes us about 20 minutes to get to Portland, but being on the outskirts has is benefits.

I was a bit worried, because we've never done that before, and they will be 2 and 4 next month, but they did pretty good. Nobody ate any until we got home, and Caitlin tried to pick the green ones, but got the hang of it after a bit.

mamama · 07/07/2007 03:30

I'm impressed that your two got the hang of it. I love Portland & that area. I am so that you live there!
