Gas pipe

Yoyo2021 · 12/06/2023 17:47

Hi,

I hope that someone may be able to help me.

This morning Jurassic Fibre arrived on our road to install there cables and started digging up the road

I have had to leave work this afternoon as an emergency which will be un paid due to my neighbour calling me to say the Jurassic fibre installers had hit a gas pipe!

Jurassic fibre scampered and it is just the gas people outside. They say Jurassic dug so unbelievably deep it’s rediculous. I am now here with my windows shut waiting for the gas to roar or something.

They tell me I will need to be here tomorrow as the gas pipe is adjacent to my property only (just my luck) ! This will be a whole day off work un paid and I won’t have any gas this evening!

They came in the gas people to check my gas box which is in the living room and said they don’t think I will be able to have my gas mains where they are!!! Instead he is thinking they will have to go in the middle part of my living room and sadly confirmed whole living room potentially dug up!!!

How do I handle this situation? I haven’t asked for this internet to be installed in my neighbourhood?

Can I get compensation for the loss of working hours and if it progresses to my living room being dug up what do I do?

Thanks all x

That's good news. Catch up on your sleep and enjoy the pool.
This all reminds me of when I bought this house and arranged for British Gas to come and do their initial inspection for boiler cover etc the same afternoon. They promptly condemned everything, cut off the supply and went round placing huge 'Do not Touch' stickers everywhere. The previous owner had forged the servicing and inspection paperwork.
That was when I learned the truth of the saying 'how do you eat an elephant? One small bite at a time'.

Wow

That is horrific

What happened to vendor after & BG you found out?

Yoyo2021 · 20/06/2023 20:44

Hi Just updating everyone nine days on… today I checked out of the hotel.

No works to be done until apparently tomorrow which is more time off work. I really do hope it will be able to be fixed. Could be a couple of days work.

JF say once they have completed the works they would like to talk compensation ….

Tippingadvice · 20/06/2023 22:14

Sorry progress is so slow but good JF have mentioned compensation.

NotEverORNever · 21/06/2023 00:05

That's annoying you need to take another day off. Hope they sort it out quickly

Yoyo2021 · 21/06/2023 18:59

We finally have gas after ten days hate what the pipes look like where there was nothing before.

JF asked what I am thinking of as a ball point figure for compensation… I said I don’t know at the moment as a lot of things to take into consideration the past ten days.

They are going to review everything and photos and come back to me with a figure.

Does anyone have any ideas what I should be going for? I’ve written everything down with a figure I think but would like thoughts first?

You need to at least work or every last penny it's cost you, lost earnings, extra fuel, phone calls, meals out etc PLUS whatever figure the new less pleasing pipes are worth plus whatever you think for the distress (normally hyperbole but totally justified in your position)

Glad it's done though

Tippingadvice · 21/06/2023 20:17

@Yoyo2021 I agree with @GayPareeee .

Firstly, have 5hey done absolutely everything they can to minimise the pipes and to rectify the damage?

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 21/06/2023 20:23

Don’t forget to add in any costs associated with cleaning, decorating, making good inside and outside, any new furniture you need for the outdoor space, boxing in of pipe work etc. (you mentioned a bench may not fit??).

Yoyo2021 · 21/06/2023 21:37

Some pictures of … the pipes!!! 😰

gosh yes all of you are right it really is a lot I think a few thousand to be honest ????

Well that’s a bodge it and run job. My cats could have done a better job! it needs to be nicely boxed in and those walls need totally redecorating. A few thousand isn’t enough. A professional carpenter and decorator would cost best part of a grand where we are just for that room, then you’ve got work costs etc to add, plus something for the hassle and upset. A minimum of £5k, but I would be asking for nearer £10k and negotiate from there.

Motnight · 21/06/2023 21:47

Bloody hell Op what an awful situation. I do wonder whether you should spend a few hundred pounds on a solicitor to agree compensation.

Yoyo2021 · 21/06/2023 21:55

See I’m so thick I just don’t know what’s normal now what’s a good job what’s a bad job except that it’s horribly ugly.

i can’t bare to show you the other photos.

😰 I will start feeling really angry again if I let it and I have no energy

I will be in touch with you all tomorrow to let them you know what is offered.

Yes, you’re right no hyperbole here maybe a drama Queen but I feel very exhausted and not very well. I am so behind at work too.

OP, you're not thick, please don't be so hard on yourself! It's very difficult to come up with a figure in a situation like this because we are conditioned not to be assertive and to stand up for ourselves and ask for what we deserve.

Wishing you all the best with this, what an awful situation. I'm so sorry to have read it all but I'm glad there's some movement.

Somanysocks · 21/06/2023 22:08

Those pipes should be run under your floorboards (if you have them and not concrete floors). They are very badly done.

If you do have concrete floors the should be run along behind the skirting boards! If you need it OP I might be able to find a picture of ours

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 21/06/2023 22:37
  1. you are not thick.
  2. you are stressed and tired. I think maybe pp was right, a solicitor might be a good option. You may have legal cover on an insurance policy (house and contents/car/breakdown cover, or via a union)
CalamityCara · 21/06/2023 22:57

Never seen a gap in a gas pipe fitting before 😳
Honestly, if they are emailing you their offer just reply with pictures of the bodged work and tell them you are not happy.
Awful.

CalamityCara · 21/06/2023 22:58

Above skirting boards is common, but looking like that is not.

Verite1 · 21/06/2023 23:05

I think they have done a terrible job. We have some pipes showing but they are flush against the wall and so we are going to be able to get them boxed in. I think I would ask them to redo and also get a quote for how much it will cost to make good. Then add on all additional expenses and a good whack for the distress and inconvenience. If you are not sure about negotiating yourself, it may be worth instructing a solicitor.

Plasticplantpot · 21/06/2023 23:11

Just read this! I would want a minimum of £20K and all of that piping redone. You need to get the press involved asap!

Ducksurprise · 21/06/2023 23:17

Holy fuck op, that is dreadful work, I can't believe they (who is they, who did the work) have left it like that. Appreciate that you are embarrassed but it might be worth posting the pictures so that other people can help you with your claim. I also think you need outside support for this. Sending you 💐

IClaudine · 22/06/2023 00:03

OP that is an appalling bodge job. I wonder if it might be worth going to one of the media consumer affairs people at somewhere like the Observer/Guardian. Or Martin Lewis. This is so not on. Guardian email contact is:

Sorry OP, I should have read all your posts. Good luck with everything.

lifehappens12 · 22/06/2023 07:15

Hi, the house I grew up in had gas pipes exposed like this. My parents boxed them in with wood and painted over so became part of the wall. They will get so dusty otherwise.

Is your meter now inside too? There was too so again bought a cupboard, took the back off the cupboard and fitted to the wall so that you open cupboard door to meter but don't have to see it

wow

no, don’t accept that

In the first I think they used a bigger pipe to thread the smaller through? I hope it’s not a gap in the pipe :)

the second pic he could have put another turn in to run closer to the wall

is this pipe work now before or after your gas meter?
