Gas pipe

Yoyo2021 · 12/06/2023 17:47

Hi,

I hope that someone may be able to help me.

This morning Jurassic Fibre arrived on our road to install there cables and started digging up the road

I have had to leave work this afternoon as an emergency which will be un paid due to my neighbour calling me to say the Jurassic fibre installers had hit a gas pipe!

Jurassic fibre scampered and it is just the gas people outside. They say Jurassic dug so unbelievably deep it’s rediculous. I am now here with my windows shut waiting for the gas to roar or something.

They tell me I will need to be here tomorrow as the gas pipe is adjacent to my property only (just my luck) ! This will be a whole day off work un paid and I won’t have any gas this evening!

They came in the gas people to check my gas box which is in the living room and said they don’t think I will be able to have my gas mains where they are!!! Instead he is thinking they will have to go in the middle part of my living room and sadly confirmed whole living room potentially dug up!!!

How do I handle this situation? I haven’t asked for this internet to be installed in my neighbourhood?

Can I get compensation for the loss of working hours and if it progresses to my living room being dug up what do I do?

Thanks all x

This might not be your area, but yours should say the same

its only your pipe PAST the meter.

anything before belongs to gas distribution grid - the people you pay your gas bill to

Should say NOT the people you pay your gas bill to

I don’t know what to make of that. As yes my gas pipes are my responsibility but in this case what they did caused for them no longer work however old my gas pipe may be it was working perfectly before hand! If they had not done this would I be in this situation right now - no I guess x

Sorry, my typo and I missed a word out, corrected above your post 😳

everything from the road up to and including the the meter is not your responsibility. Whoever does this should put right your front path and garden. This is your gas distribution network provider for the area, which will not be the same company that you pay your gas bills.

Who has told you that your internal gas pipes from your meter to your boiler are the problem?

I really think you would benefit from
getting a gas safe engineer round to help you with the internal part, even just with asking the questions to the people who will fix the pipe up to your meter.

Can you call whoever installed or services your boiler for you?

is your front wall like the neighbours grey/white one visible?

and you didn’t order fibre?
they were digging the grass verge on the street outside your front garden wall?

then they hit the pipe and had to dig up your front path to your door?

The white box next to your front door, is that gas your original gas meter & white wall mounted box?

who called you this evening?
was it Jurassic or your gas network provider who came out the day jurrasic hit the pipe?

Hello,

yes I have a wall there and behind a bench.

That white meter box is what they put up.

The works are on the street below. They were putting in there fibre so they can sell it in are area as you can only currently hve sky bt etc It was Jurassic that called me this afternoon.

Hi OP, I just wanted to reassure you a bit. A similar thing happened to me a few years ago and it did all get sorted and didn't cost me a penny in the end. It was stressful for sure.

There was a gas leak in the street just up the road from me. Gas works were underway which was all fine and then my house started shaking so I went outside to see what was happening. They'd dug a huge pit in my tiny front garden, right up to and slightly under my house. Main contractor person told me they were worried gas was pooling under my house following the work theyd done.

They then said they hasn't realised I was in (try ringing the bell?) and really I should leave as it might not be safe. I said I'd go and work from a coffee shop 2 mins away, gave them my phone num and left.

An hour or so later my neighbour called me and said she'd just seen them break into my house, by the time I got back, they'd pulled up all the floor boards in my front room.

I have to say I was beyond furious - they couldn't explain why they didn't call me to get access to my house. It was like they never even gave it a second of thought.

It took a while but they paid for all the damage to my front door caused by breaking in, made good the floor and the front garden and we got a slug of compensation towards replacing the front fence which they could have repaired but we said we'd rather have the cash and built a new wall.

The whole thing was absurd and stressful and I did go a bit crazy getting it resolved but it was all fine in the end. Good luck.

HotelNotPortofino · 15/06/2023 23:09

you can ignore what Jurrasic say right now

Think of them as Boris in the news today, incapable of telling the truth ;)

You want to speak to your gas distribution people.

It will get sorted, as the poster above says.

Find your gas distribution network supplier, you said Exeter?, maybe these https://www.wwutilities.co.uk/news-and-blog/exeter-gas-works-to-begin-in-new-year/

or find the correct one for your area.

And speak to them, then confirm all conversations in writing

They are the people you want to talk to, & they will bill Jurassic for the mess they have caused.

if your gas meter was inside your house before, and now will need to come outside. All gas networks are having to do this. It’s been a while since I’ve had one move an internal to external meter, but they paid for and laid the pipe work from old meter back outside to new meter.

Because that part up to the meter belongs to them, and when they move it in the hosue, it’s still theirs until your new meter is connected up. Once the new meter is in, then the pipe that they have laid inside from the meter becomes yours.

Tell them the white wall mounted box is too large for the size of your front garden, and want it to be a brown semi submerged ground box - as I’ve put in a picture above.

And I wouldn’t bother with Jurassic for now. Let your gas distribution network deal with them for you about the pipe and meter.

Sorry, tired and typos.

😳

Yoyo2021 · 15/06/2023 23:20

Thank you so much your message has put my mind at rest.

I will try this approach in the morning. Yes my meatre box goes all the way into the back bit of the property inside so that might help me!

I think it’s wales and west utilities as they came out to fix.

I don’t think il get my pipes fixed ever at this rate let alone compo good night and rest well x

get some sleep & speak to wales & west in the morning

good luck!

Deathbyfluffy · 15/06/2023 23:50

Just popping back in to see what the latest update is - that’s appalling.
They should really have you in a hotel!

Yoyo2021 · 16/06/2023 13:36

Your dread this post.

I had a phone call today saying that they will do the work and then have conversations after around the other damage.

I got a call from a company they had sent to do the work and came home from work to wait in for a company. I told them on the phone there’s no way one person will get it done today it’s a two man job - did not listen prior to them arranging for the company to come up.

So the guy had a look from this company and found….

. no sign of my pipes being corrosive ✅
. no sign of gas leaking before had✅
. no sign of any my pipes being faulty or anything

he also told me that actually like the handy diagram which was posted in this thread I’m only responsible for pipes past my metre and my meatre is at the back of my house ✅!!! The work that needs to be done is well within that area ✅

I recorded this convo and he took pictures. He won’t be able to do the job but can at some point next week hopefully Monday.

So yes out of gas today (day five) and the entire weekend possibly more! 😖

I’ve sent a email saying I can’t believe you sent me such lies that those pipes are my responsibility and I am liable when you are a multi million pound company when it’s just me a young child reminded them I have had to leave work again and asked what they will do as I am with no gas again for the entire weekend.🥹

I’ve also told them they need to give me a date and time for the works to be completed so I can tell my employer.

I pray I can get a date and time for works next week.

Thank you all for continued support.

@Yoyo2021 you are doing all the right things. It’s awful whilst you go through it, but hang in as it will all be sorted.

Have you asked Jurassic for an interim payment to cover your lost wages?

HotelNotPortofino · 16/06/2023 14:42

I’m glad you had someone W&W sent round & that they are now on it, and more importantly confirmed that it’s not your responsibility.

Hopefully they will get it booked in for you asap now.

Now is the time to start calling JR out on their bullshit publicly & requesting compensation and maybe a hotel for the weekend. And also telling all your neighbours how they’ve behaved and suggesting they don’t sign up with them ;)

HotelNotPortofino · 16/06/2023 14:51

Ask here for the JR CEO’s email and contact him direct

I couldn’t find him on ceo mail

ApolloandDaphne · 16/06/2023 14:58

Bloody hell, that is ridiculous. I can't be of any help to you but i hope you get it all sorted very soon.

IClaudine · 16/06/2023 15:05

This is awful. Stand your ground and don't let them get away with it.

Throwncrumbs · 16/06/2023 17:17

the gas people will do whatever is easiest for them so stand your ground and say that what they want to do isn’t good for you. We had a gas leak back in Dec and the two blokes that were doing the work wanted to do the quickest and easiest way for them, my husband told them in no uncertain terms that they were not coming in our property to sort out a problem that was outside our property… they kept saying ‘but it’s easier this way’ tough! They eventually did it the harder way and I really pushed for compensation from them, they wrecked my front garden, my driveway …pair of incompetent idiots from SGN!

Yoyo2021 · 16/06/2023 17:33

I’m so sorry to hear about your bad experience above. It’s so shocking. I thank everyone for support and advice. I’ve just finished work as went back.

To my shock I received a call and an apology it has all changed since the homes Exeter company came out and told me nothing was wrong with my pipes.

They told me they would like to put me and my son up in a hotel tonight until Tuesday morning which is in walking distance. It’s a nice hotel with a pool and they have included breakfast.

At this point I let them hear me cry. I said this is good because we will be able to have a shower, wash hair do my legs etc but it’s the last thing I want to do be in a hotel but better than the other option.

I still don’t have a date for works as they said would call me at end of day but at least I have somewhere for hot water etc and can sleep a bit better.

I really hope the work can be complete and then as for compensation well I don’t know then my minds just not on that now.

I never knew something could affect me so much like this.
It’s not the end but getting that second opinion was vital.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

That’s sounds more positive op. Glad they are finally taking responsibility, I just hope it doesn’t take too long for it all to be sorted. Flowers

HotelNotPortofino · 16/06/2023 19:58

Great news!

trulyunruly01 · 16/06/2023 20:30

That's good news. Catch up on your sleep and enjoy the pool.
This all reminds me of when I bought this house and arranged for British Gas to come and do their initial inspection for boiler cover etc the same afternoon. They promptly condemned everything, cut off the supply and went round placing huge 'Do not Touch' stickers everywhere. The previous owner had forged the servicing and inspection paperwork.
That was when I learned the truth of the saying 'how do you eat an elephant? One small bite at a time'.

NotEverORNever · 16/06/2023 23:24

That is good news OP. At least you can have a bit of a relax. You must be exhausted from having to deal with this.

rileynexttime · 17/06/2023 08:11

What an unbelievably awful experience you are having .You deserve huge credit for how you're handling it .
Thank heavens for posters on here giving you good advice .
Hope you get some rest this weekend .

Why is it only breakfast that's included ......

😖 why on Earth would someone forge paperwork putting another human being at risk messing around with gas and boilers. I am aways going to be asking more and more questions next time something like this happens. I’ve never heard of that quote but I think your spot on this is something I will learn and I will have to take one step at a time with getting this mess sorted. What happened in the end?

I feel like I can’t complain / go down that street right now mentally. it’s a niceish hotel. The bath and shower I had was fantastic after five days of using a kettle and a tub. I have to pretend we are on holiday if you get me and pretend this isn’t happening.

I went to Lidls at 7pm on way back from work and got squash, snacks etc luckily there is a fridge. I don’t want to be spending money here if I can avoid it that I wouldn’t on a normal weekend.

although I did have a very large glass of wine last night which then sent me off into the most fabulous seep ( 8.45 for the large glass) but worth it.

I will most likely go home for dinner tonight then come back as we can use our air fryer.

but yes your right I guess shouldn’t be just breakfast but at least this is something.
