Requested sons birth certificate from mum

hi, my son is 5 and I am not with the mother. She is very controlling and I have asked for my sons birth certificate, she asked why and I told her it was so I could open him a bank/savings account (bank specifically told me they needed the original). I am on his certificate. I explained that as I am due to have a child with my wife, I’d like to ensure I can open both of them one.

she’s refusing to answer messages confirming that she’ll provide it.

does she have to give me it?

thanks in advance

Why should she provide it when you could just order a copy for yourself?

BernadetteIsMySister · 11/04/2023 19:34

Just order your own copy, no she doesn't have to give you her copy.

As stated above - bank have asked for the original, not a copy.

Also, why shouldn't she provide it? It's to benefit our son...

As stated above - the bank called me to state it must be the original.

I was surprised by this, but they specifically called to tell me.

Just order a copy when they say original they just mean one that’s been stamped by the registrar and not a photocopy.

I came to say this as well

Kaffiene · 11/04/2023 19:37

Bank just mean an original not a photo copy. Just order your own.

FadedRed · 11/04/2023 19:38

By ‘original’ the bank mean an official copy from the registration office, not a photocopy. You can get an official copiy from the Registrars office, (GRO.gov.uk) provided you send the correct fee. You do not need the copy that your child’s mother has.

A copy from the registry office is classed as an original. They just mean not a photocopy.

Otherwise how would someone who doesn't have or has lost their "original" ever open a bank account?

And yes it's to benefit her son. But she has the original and you have a perfectly easy and cheap way of obtaining your own copy too.

Thank you - I didn't realise they meant an official copy would be accepted.

There you go then, problem solved Grin

BernadetteIsMySister · 11/04/2023 19:42

Amazing what a bit of common sense can sort out when harassment of a mother will do instead!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/04/2023 19:42

Haha ikr

lipstickwoman · 11/04/2023 19:45

A perfectly reasonable request in my view OP. I'd order my own and avoid giving mum the satisfaction of saying no.

Badbudgeter · 11/04/2023 19:53

In all honesty this is the sort of thing my ex Asks me. It’s irritating that I’m still supposed to do the wife work when I already do so much for our shared children.

They mean dont photocopy a formal certificate, but you can easily get another formal certificate issued. And if they wont accept that, just move on to another bank

No, she shouldn't be handing it over to you - get your own

Maybe she doesn't get any satisfaction from saying no. Maybe she doesn't want to give away something she keeps when there is a cheap and easy way for the child's father to arrange their own.

PurBal · 11/04/2023 20:00

Your sons birth certificate is a copy of the birth register. Literally “a certified copy”, it says it at the top of the certificate. You can have multiple certified copies.

He has had 5 years to set up a savings account.

Wishitsnows · 11/04/2023 20:05

I’ve opened a few bank accounts for my dd and never been asked for a birth certificate

liveforsummer · 11/04/2023 20:10

Get your own copy. No such thing as an original- maybe they mean the long one. You need to pay a little bit more for that bit any you order will be 'original' how would that work otherwise if one was lost?!
