Requested sons birth certificate from mum

FinnV · 11/04/2023 19:33

hi, my son is 5 and I am not with the mother. She is very controlling and I have asked for my sons birth certificate, she asked why and I told her it was so I could open him a bank/savings account (bank specifically told me they needed the original). I am on his certificate. I explained that as I am due to have a child with my wife, I’d like to ensure I can open both of them one.

she’s refusing to answer messages confirming that she’ll provide it.

does she have to give me it?

thanks in advance

Dear god there are some hostile responses on her.

Lets all bash the bloke that wants to save for his DC🙄

It's a pretty common response on MN sadly.

Izzieloo · 11/04/2023 20:16

He asked a reasonable question . what’s wrong with that ?

He has had 5 years to set up a savings account.

Good grief. You're really reaching to find something to blame him for here.

Maybe he didn't have the spare cash until now? I didn't open a bank account for my daughter until she was 11. Presumably that's okay though, because I'm a woman.

Ikeatears · 11/04/2023 20:22

The misandry in these boards is off the scale sometimes. The op misunderstood the bank's request. He thought he needed the certificate his ex has, he asked her for it to open a bank account. That's all! I really don't understand the snippy responses.

2bazookas · 11/04/2023 20:23

You can order his birth certificate for yourself from the GRO. £11.

When they say "original BC", banks mean one issued from the General Register Office.

as opposed to a photocopy.

Just order a copy when they say original they just mean one that’s been stamped by the registrar and not a photocopy.

exactly this

Exactly!

So without any information about how either parent has behaved, the conclusion is automatically made that mum is being 'harassed' by a malingering ex who might run off abroad with their son at any moment, and can't possibly have any good intentions of saving for his son.

Lovely.

All my children have savings accounts and I never had to show a birth certificate . So yes it sounds like massive BS

Shamoo · 11/04/2023 23:18

@Mumwomansisterdaughter Presumably you haven’t opened them recently then because I opened a new one for my daughter last week and had to provide her birth certificate.

For a bank account to be opened in their name, yes you do need a birth certificate or passport.

tailinthejam · 11/04/2023 23:19

Random fact of the day: Even the 'original' you are given at the time of the registration of a birth, marriage or death is a certified copy of the entry in the actual register itself.

All you gotta do it call up your local council as the for birth and death registry and ask for one I had to get them for my kids for their passports (I had misplaced their originals when moving house… as you do!) I did have to pay a fee I think £25 or something like that I just had to answer questions like their date of birth my name date of birth their address as such it came the next day I paid £13 extra for next day delivery or else was going to take 2 weeks!

Here

That’s o U.K. if you have no bank account at the bank . I would be very wary of this post

Fuctifin0 · 16/04/2023 22:52

@Mumwomansisterdaughter I opened bank accounts for my dd's 5 and 9 years ago.
Different banks but both required birth certificates to open them.

shieldmaiden7 · 16/04/2023 22:55

My ex husband lost all of my children's originally birth certificates as well as our marriage certificate. I ordered all new ones to have in my possession and our marriage certificate to prove I was their mother as I am remarried and the banks were absolutely fine with it. I opened accounts for my children in 2 separate banks and neither had a problem with them other than wanted full ones as the little didn't count.
Order a copy so you have it yourself in record then go into the bank and show them what you have and if it's possible, if not bank somewhere else. I've never know this to be an issue though.
