Landlord has upped my metre to £4 a day

Hello I currently live on top of a shop and we are on a sub metre so the main supply runs from the shop but I pay for my eletric tokens for my own prepaid metre. So I give the shop the money for my eletric token to help contribute to the main metre. Now the shop has recently become vacent so now the landlord has had a bill. Which he doesn't want to pay it seems. So he said for me to pay him in installments or he does something to my prepaid metre. So since Friday evening when I topped up I've gone from £37 to now £25 and its only Sunday! Is this right hes put my metre to start at £4 a day?

£4 a day is easy to use, especially if electric only and at this time of year. Do you have access to the meter so you can see exactly what it's costing you or is your landlord just giving you numbers and you're paying it without question?
Sounds like a very dodgy if not illegal set up

RogersOrganismicProcess · 06/11/2022 16:27

Sounds about right, depending on the size of your flat, usage etc. We are struggling to stay within £5 per day region. Our house is 16 degrees!

HotCoffee22 · 06/11/2022 16:27

Is it possible the shop were previously subsidising you and now they’ve left you’re paying for your own usage, which is higher than previously thought.

Ccickenroast · 06/11/2022 16:35

I'm not sure what he has done but he gave me a bill for £560 and said if csnt pay him in installments then he's going to do something to my metre. Which he has so know the starting amount is £4 before I've even used any electricity. The bill he wnated me to pay was for the shop not me. So I'm thinking hes messed with it so I buy more tokens of him so it's a way of giving him back towards that bill I wasn't liable to pay I will add a pic of my metre as the tokens I buy of him which contributes to the main supply downstairs in the shop.

It looks to me like he's getting out of paying the shop. As it states this is yoir business account bill. I'm the tenant upstairs nothbig to do with his business or shop downstairs.

He wouldn’t have a residential account though would he? He doesn’t live there.

Ccickenroast · 06/11/2022 16:38

So it's taking a set amount of £4 a day weather i use electric or not. That's the starting point then whatever electricity I use on top of that.

He is the landlord so owns it. So where the tenants have left the shop he automatically becomes liable now for anything.

And plus I'm not getting my rebate either as its all in his name via the supplier

£4 a day? Does that includes heating and use of an electric oven/cooker/shower? If so, for a token meter it sounds very very reasonable

Hugasauras · 06/11/2022 16:46

Do you mean it starts at £4 a day and then your usage goes on top? It sounds like a weird setup. Why are you giving the shop money at all if you buy your own tokens for your meter?

Ccickenroast · 06/11/2022 16:47

My gas and wyaer are separate. The £4 is automatically taken off it isn't including in what I use electric wise so I'm getting a automatic charge of £4 then the electric I use then on top so I'm useing about £7 a day. Before I was only useing £1.20 a day

OP, people arent understanding because you weren't very clear.

Just to clarify for everyone; she isnt paying £4 per day for electricity.
The landlord has set it to take £4 every day before any use, to cover what he deems her debt. That £4 is not for any power. It is to pay off an outstanding bill. She then has to pay for electricity she uses on top of that.

The bill however, isnt her. It is for the business downstairs and he doesn't want to pay it sp wants her to do it.

OP, none of this sounds right. Why dont you have your own account with the energy supplier?

Ccickenroast · 06/11/2022 16:49

Hugasauras yes it starts at £4 so it's not any elelteic I've used its a standard automatic charge so it isn't any electric I've used my elelteic adds on top of the £4. I buy elelteric tokens of my landlord to top my metre up the tokens go in my prepaid metre.

Ccickenroast · 06/11/2022 16:51

WeepingSomnambulist thank you yes that's exactly what I mean. I' can't get my own provider due to the elelteric supply being connected to the shop. And the landlord won't pay to get the shop and me seprate metres.

WeepingSomnambulist · 06/11/2022 16:51

Can you contact the energy company yourself? Maybe call Shelter. They'll help talk you through how to handle this.
I'd maybe contact my MP as well to help with a rogue landlord gouging you to cover electricity on another property he owns.

Ccickenroast · 06/11/2022 16:53

I have to buy tokens of the landlord to contribute towards the main supply in the shop downstairs to help with the eeltricrlty which mine runs off. But I have a prepaid metre so when my eletric runs out my whole eletric goes but the shops doesnt. So I pay to use the electricity that runs of the main supply in the shop. Its so very confussing and a odd workout

Yes, definitely contact Shelter and your MP as per PP comments. This doesn't sound right at all and almost seems like your landlord has set his own 'standing charge' (if that makes sense). Do you live alone?

Your landlord should also be passing on the £400 energy discount.

Ccickenroast · 06/11/2022 16:57

I only topped up my prepaid metre Friday evening £37 and its gone down to £25 already in one and half days

OP posts:
PurBal · 06/11/2022 17:00

This doesn’t sound legal (no idea if it is). The shop is commercial premises and the flat residential. So should be on separate tariffs. Do you pay council tax etc?!

808Kate1 · 06/11/2022 17:00

So you've used £12 since Friday night? That wouldn't be a necessarily huge amount if you have a large family, but if you live alone that doesn't seem right at all, unless you're absolutely hammering the leccy and gas! Would that £12 be not inclusive of the £4 starting-point?

IncompleteSenten · 06/11/2022 17:00

You should contact shelter and the cab for advice on the legal situation here.

Ccickenroast · 06/11/2022 17:00

Me and my son who is 7.and I have a feeling he's going to turn down my rebate. He attended my flat Friday evening mesed around with my metre and I had seen major drops it took about £6 in matter of half a day and charges alot over night aswell. I hadn't used much either only the microwave and kettle twice my cooker is all gas see.

LumpyandBumps · 06/11/2022 17:01

It sounds like he is re selling electricity, and I think there are limits to the amount which can be charged compared to what it costs him. I don’t know what happens about standing charges, etc. It might be a good idea to contact an organisation like Shelter for advice.
