Utterly horrified after opening the post today. My DS who only passed his driving test 3 weeks ago has been caught by a speed camera doing 41 in a 30 zone. The letter came to me as the car is registered in my name. He is very upset and remorseful but that not to going to change the consequences . We have to send the form back stating he is the driver.
What is likely to happen?
Can he go on a speed awareness course if you is a newly qualified driver or will it be a fine and points?
I am so upset and angry.

@AnotherOriginalUsername

you mean the signs that are part of the Highway Code

Yes, dear 🙄

Presumably your local authority prioritises providing, maintaining & replacing them, cutting back foliage around them etc over things like schools & libraries? Because mine certainly doesn’t.

I know of someone who was caught speeding within 4week of passing the test, the letter from DVLA said they'd lose their license under the new rules but he phoned and pleaded with them to keep it as he had a job & family to support. They let him keep his licence with paying £100 fine and going on speed awareness course

That didn’t happen. A single small speeding offence would be a three pointer and therefore he wouldn’t hit the 6 point zone. If he was traveling quickly enough to be getting 6 points then that would be a court appearance. The DVLA have nothing to do with offering speed awareness courses. You’ve been fed a load of BS I’m afraid.

TheHobbitMum - rubbish I'm afraid.

BigSandyballs - the licence is not lost for a year under those circumstances. It's until the test is passed again, no time limit.

The camera takes photos for speed whether you are 17 or 117. I hope that you are aware of some new higher penalty rules that changed this year example extra points for driving whilst using a mobile phone, tail gating on a motorway. I don't see the point of stopping your 17 year old from driving, they have passed their test, driving is a skill that needs to be learnt through continual use, with road and weather awareness.

Update for anyone interested.
DS did the 4 hour speed awareness course today. He said it was helpful and interesting. It was attended by a large range of ages including young adults.
He was just inside the speed allowance for the course 34-42 mph in 30 zone. It took weeks to get the letter saying he had the chance of doing a speed awareness course and then the availability within a 30 mile radius of our home was 2 months.

After my original horrified reaction I calmed down after a few days and we have let him drive since without incident.

You are going to ban him from using the car for six months until he has learnt to be respectful of both your car and other road users??

OldPosterNewUsername · 09/01/2019 04:09

No excuse as clearly not paying enough attention. He even saw the camera but didn't twig his speed. I am totally gutted he could be such an idiot. He is such a careful boy usually. He passed his test with only one minor and he has had a couple of motorway lessons since with his instructor who was very happy with him. It could have been so much worse so I can't make any excuses for him
You say that you can't make any excuses for him but yet your post reads like you are trying to minimise what he did as if it wasn't really his fault.

PeaQiwiComHequo · 09/01/2019 06:30

sign him up to do a more in-depth defensive driving/pass plus course.

Toomanycats99 · 09/01/2019 06:44

My Tom Tom app also gives the speed limits for the roads you are on and beeps if you are over speed. So allows you to properly check not just slow down for a camera!

ForTheLoveOfDoughnuts · 09/01/2019 06:54

I did a speed awareness course recently for doing 40 in a 30. I'm not sure what the limit is 42.. I don't know if the limit will apply to someone who just passed though

ForTheLoveOfDoughnuts · 09/01/2019 06:54

I think these are the figures

What is the likely to happen DS 17 caught on speed camera only just passed his test.

ZOMBIE THREAD

Trethew · 09/01/2019 13:56

As bigSandy says, it’s back to square one. He will even have to apply for a new provisional licence

x2boys · 09/01/2019 19:24

Well that's obviously nonsense Trethew as the Op updated three months ago and he did the speed awareness course Hmm
