I set up an email address and let another party use it.

  • I made the email address up on my laptop (a standard hotmail one)
  • I set the password
  • My email address and information was the security information
  • I was allowed to access it when helping the person I let use it with sending emails etc
  • She has since used it for her work purposes, didn't ask me first etc
  • I needed some old information from it so logged on being allowed to in the past to get the information

She is now saying I've hacked her whole computer and that Apple have told her it was me and they've given her my ip address, my name, address etc (I have not hacked her computer)

Is this illegal as I was the one who set it up on my computer, set the passwords and I'm the security information and I was allowed to use it and send emails from it. Surely it my email address?

If anyone can help it'll be great

I've no idea regarding the legality of it, but you say you were allowed to use it. Surely if it is yours you would be the one doing the "allowing?"

Is she a friend? Can't you just sort this out between you?

edamsavestheday · 10/08/2014 11:54

Bollocks to her. She's just trying to put the frighteners on you. Tell her to give you a copy of the paperwork from Apple - she doesn't have any, shes making it up.

NCOBVIOUSLY1542 · 10/08/2014 11:58

Llareggub - that's true I was/am letting her use it, I set it up and she started linking her facebook etc to it. She is no good at computers couldn't even use internet banking etc so everything like that I had to do for her because she couldn't/wouldn't do it. So she can't set up her own email address.

She is no longer a friend, we no longer talk so can't be sorted out by talking, she's saying she's going to the police and suing me. She's not a very nice person as I've now found out

She said she's spoken to Apple over the phone and that's what they've told her. I did try and say it was against the data protection act for a start and how on earth they would of got my IP address, laptop name, my name and address etc is beyond me

If I was you I'd change the password & disable the email. Let her set her own up.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 10/08/2014 12:07

Change the password and you use it. She can set up her own.

If you set it up you can close it again surely?

Just change the password and close the account.

Apple wouldn't give out this information, or IF they did, they'd be in breach of data protection. If they were concerned, surely they'd contact YOU, assuming it was set up on your pc? She's talking nonsense.

NCOBVIOUSLY1542 · 10/08/2014 12:09

I can't change the password, since she's found out I went on there to get some information she's done that herself, She tried to change all the security information from mine to her boyfriends and obviously I said it wasn't me who requested it as I didn't so she changed the password.

She has all of her work stuff linked to that account now and deleted everything that I had on there. So she can just keep it and i'll use another one.

I just wondered is it illegal that I went on there? As no doubt she'll say I either didn't set it up or I set it up for her to use.

sparkle9 - I know Apple and Microsoft is different, she doesn't though she thinks that because her laptop is Apple, Apple with tell her everything that happens on it. As I said she's not computer savvy!

Mrs Yes it was set up on my laptop which is a HP not an Apple anyway

She often Bullshits so I just wanted to make sure

Has she had one of those scam phone calls and fallen for it? She sounds bloody hard work

FreeLikeABird · 10/08/2014 12:21

What a load of crap, apple wouldn't have or give out any information like that, it's a hotmail account for starters.
You set it up, she used it so it's YOUR email not hers, I can't see anyone being interested in this at all.
Ignore her she is talking utter shit.

NCOBVIOUSLY1542 · 10/08/2014 12:21

She is hard work to say the least hence why I went NC!

She lies to try and catch you out and it never works because she doesn't know what to lie about haha

What a load of bollocks. Why would Apple be interested?

Why is she bothering you now?

Letthemtalk · 10/08/2014 12:32

She's talking bollocks. As far as apple would be concerned it's your email address and she's been using it, not the other way round? Ignore her, or just delete the address as it's yours?

NCOBVIOUSLY1542 · 10/08/2014 12:36

As I said in PP she's changed the password etc and has used it for work so there are hundreds of her work emails on there so I can't get back into it.

Thank you all though I'm guessing i've done nothing illegal

insancerre · 10/08/2014 12:40

So if you set it u using your email account what's stopping you from resetting the password and having it sent to your email addtess

NCOBVIOUSLY1542 · 10/08/2014 12:42

My email address is the security information she uses the actual email address and has changed the password to the actual email address.

Im not fussed about closing it as it takes 60 days and she'll long on in that time and it'll be cancelled so I might as well let her have it

OP posts:
SwedishEdith · 10/08/2014 12:44

Can you not get back in via the "I've forgotten my password" route? I know the sensible thing is to leave it now but I would be so tempted to disable it just to annoy her

forago · 10/08/2014 12:49

she sounds like a moron. and apple wouldn't give a shit about what 2 people were doing with a hotmail account. Hotmail is owned by microsoft, who also wouldn't give a shit about this nonsense. I'd close the account personally - use your security questions to reset it and delete everything. I don't think it's a good idea to have her using an email address with your personal details. legally you own it not her.

forago · 10/08/2014 12:50

she wont be able to login of you reset the password and cancel the account.

NCOBVIOUSLY1542 · 10/08/2014 12:51

I'd just rather leave it and not worry about the aggravation it'll cause I don't want to get into a hotmail war with her lol

As long as I've done nothing illegal I don't care what she does with it lol

OP posts:
Picturesinthefirelight · 10/08/2014 12:52

If its hotmail then click on the forgotten password bit & reset it.

Then delete everything.

NCOBVIOUSLY1542 · 10/08/2014 12:56

Please see PP

I do NOT want to get into a hotmail war with her about this all, She's changed all the names over to hers and changed the password. None of my stuff is on it and I don't really care for it.

I got what I needed off of it and that's all I care about.

She can have it, all I wanted to know was I doing anything illegal accessing it?

OP posts:
todayisnottheday · 10/08/2014 12:57

Just reset the password and ask for the info to go to the back up address (presumably yours) change it then cancel the account. You own it so it's not illegal to access it however you are liable for it so if she starts harassing someone or something it will come back to you. Apple can't have given her your details because accessing Hotmail doesn't get you anywhere near her computer just onto the Hotmail server. She's talking out of her bottom. Just close it and close down any way she has to contact you. If she goes to the police they'll laugh.
