My children look totally different

PrettyMaMa · 20/11/2021 16:55

It's not a bad thing it's a shocking thing o know the power of genetics I've been told so many times
And yes my partner & I have made children who look completely different

Like to the point people are pointing it out & it's beginning to give me a complex SadSad

I love my girls dearly my first is a combination of my dads side & great grandmother blonde curls big hazel eyes olive skin

And my second is mainly taken her dads genes dark hair straight dark eyes light skin

I come from a family who all look different but a bit the same here and there

I just didn't expect it and I don't want people commenting to the point they will question their sisterhood in life

I don't recall anyone I know who looks totally different from their siblings doing so but it's become deep for me as I just want them to grow and enjoy each other I don't want them to face such rubbish in their future

Ladies give me some advice pls

Not one looks like me btw and that's cool .... cause maybe no 3 will

My two are different looking, and have different characters. They still enjoy each other’s company and are friends.

LoveComesQuickly · 20/11/2021 17:00

My friend has twin DDs who look completely different! (Non identical obviously!) One tall and dark haired and the the other small and auburn haired.

AliceAldridge · 20/11/2021 17:02

I am tall and fair and my sister is petite and dark. It didn't make any difference to anything Smile

Pushing30 · 20/11/2021 17:05

I don't think you should worry about it. I'm mixed race (my mum's English and my dad's Somalian). I also have two girls, and although they have the same dad. My eldest looks very much like me (black curly hair, very dark brown eyes) with skin slightly lighter in tone. Whereas my youngest is very pale (you wouldn't expect she's mixed race) with blonde curly hair and mid brown eyes.

Genetics are funny, although they know they obviously look different they are very close and don't question their sisterhood.

Also me and my two sisters have different dads, look nothing alike but are the closest. HTH

Thanks for the positive comments ladies it really helps

Two of my children couldn't look more different to me. My 11 year old is the spit of her dad; tall, slim, blonde wavy hair and a beautiful tan in summer. My 13 year old looks exactly like me. Shorter than her sister, straight mousey hair and hundreds of freckles that mean she burns like a beetroot in summer. I can't see a single similarly between them.

So many people have told me how alike they look.

maofteens · 21/11/2021 04:47

My husband has five brothers. Look at our wedding photos and it looks like we pulled random men off the street. They go from 5' 7" to 6' 4", slight and fair to stocky and dark, olive to pale skin. Genetics are truly fascinating.

Longdistance · 21/11/2021 04:58

My dds look different. My eldest is blond, blue eyed with pale skin. The youngest is dark haired, green eyes, olive skin (she tans beautifully). When they were small I was asked if I was their child minder.
My eldest takes after my dh and the youngest looks like me.
I have to explain that dd1 takes after dh and dd2 takes after me. It’s pretty obvious when people see us together as a family.

PennyWus · 21/11/2021 05:13

I didn't look like my brother as a child - we were both fair-skinned, but he was a tousled blonde, tanned honey-gold in summer and has clear blue-eyes and I have straight black-brown hair and freckles.

When I was a child he enjoyed teasing that I was adopted. Hmm

We look more alike now we are middle-aged, his hair is darker and mine lighter.

The weird thing is, despite a 6-year age gap and very different academic interests (he is a computer geek, I like arts and music) we have almost identical hand-writing. He can forge my signature without trying. Sometimes if I glance at a card or a note, I do a double take because it looks like I've written it.

So, I guess my point is, similarities and differences aren't always about looks. If you adopted a child you'd expect a family bond, a sibling bond, to develop. Those bonds of sisterhood have everything to do with a shared life together, I think, and less to do with hair colour or whether you inherited the family kink-in-the-nose.

Seeleyboo · 21/11/2021 05:21

My boy has jet black hair and very straight woth gun metal.grey eyes. My daughter is blond with a kink and has hazel eyes.

Softwonder · 21/11/2021 05:24

My sister and I never looked like sisters. She had fine blonde straight hair, blue eyes, was slim, clear skin. I have very dark brown, thick curly hair and green eyes, am slightly porkier, and had acne as a teen.

Occasionally I catch a glimpse of myself doing a facial expression that looks just like her (she died 5 years ago) but that's about it.

Yusanaim · 21/11/2021 05:54

I think over the years they change gradually and have a look of their DPs or different relatives. It comes and goes.

ThirdElephant · 21/11/2021 06:09

It happens a lot, OP, particularly when parents have different ethnic backgrounds. Don't waste energy worrying about it.

My sibling and I are very different; one looks textbook Italian, particularly in summer, the other very very English- pale, fair and ruddy.

Theunamedcat · 21/11/2021 06:31

Three kids with two different dads everyone assumes that first and third have the same dad even though there is a 13 year age gap between them its actually 2nd and third but 2nd has dirty blond hair everyone else has really dark hair it's bizarre

Andoffwego · 21/11/2021 06:45

I only have one child. He looks like one of exH’s sisters. He doesn’t look like me at all and although he has the same colouring as his dad he doesn’t look like him either apart from that - very different shaped face, eyes and so on. We always said that if we’d had another child there was absolutely no chance that it would have looked like DS.

My dad has two sisters. He is dark haired, sister one is blonde, sister 2 is ginger. It just seems to go like that for some families, whereas others seem to only produce clones. So weird.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 21/11/2021 06:52

My brother and I look totally different. His daughter (my niece) looks like a mini version of me. If the technology and the clothing didn’t date the photo, you’d be hard pressed to tell us apart in photos of us at the same age.

Brother - tall, dark hair and eyes, quite tanned skin.
Me and niece - small, slight, blonde with green eyes and very pale skin.

MadamMoth · 21/11/2021 07:34

I have 3 dcs and they don't look related at all. One so pale their skin is almost translucent, dark ginger hair, covered in freckles. One with dark brown hair, no freckles and olive skin. Another with olive skin, a few freckles and auburn hair. All different eye colours too! I marvel at how different they look to each other and I don't think I'd be bothered if people didn't think they were siblings. They'd probably also be delighted given they despise each other Grin

tcjotm · 21/11/2021 08:08

My siblings and I look heaps alike because our parents are so similar in appearance they could be siblings. I didn’t need to be reminded they were my mini-me’s to know we were siblings. That was just annoying.

A bit of genetic difference is good!

If someone makes a comment I’d just say “well no, they don’t look like twins but they sure look like family. A is the spitting image of her dad and B looks just like my grandmother as a girl”

PrettyMaMa · 21/11/2021 10:26

Thinking about my 3 boys, 2 are genetically mine and 2 are genetically my husbands. I had a son when we met and so did he and then we had one together.

The two oldest who are step brothers are similar looking anyway, both fair haired, muscular, good looking boys with very similar haircuts (that popular skin fade back and sides and longer and wavy at the front). They refer to each other as "my brother" rather than step as they've grown up together in the same household since aged 2. No one bats an eyelid but seem genuinely puzzled when it's revealed they're not actually brothers.

The youngest one is now 15 and he looks like both of his (half) brothers! Literally it's like, he has the nose of one, the mouth of the other etc etc. And the same haircut. Lol.

Genetics are bizarre.

MrsFin · 21/11/2021 10:53

Look at princes William and Harry. They look nothing alike, so much so that there have been accusations that they have different fathers.

As has been said, genetics are fascinating.

Hadalifeonce · 21/11/2021 11:40

We have a blue eyed blond and a brown eye brunette, absolutely no similarities at all. No one thinks they are siblings. Makes no difference to their relationship.

gunnersgold · 21/11/2021 11:46

Often you don't see it but other people do. I'm very different to my sister but outsiders sometimes say we look alike . In reality she looks like my dad and I look like my mum and she is ten stone heavier than me so looks quite different . It's never been an issue tbh .

HoppingPavlova · 21/11/2021 11:58

Yes, mine look completely different to each other and us and I have had many people over the years actually presume (out loud) that I had IVF, thinking donor material I guess. That’s included medical specialists who have treated the kids and urged me to ‘tell the truth, strictly between us’. No IVF, all biological. It’s weird but not something to stress over or even give a second thought really.
