You're welcome! They give a lot of clarity over important elements and delivered without confusing legal jargon too. 👌

This is still currently the period of Tisha B'av, right? The period of mourning the destruction of the first and second Jewish temples as well as other things that was perpetrated against the Jewish people throughout history. No doubt 7th October 2023 makes this more painful than ever before.

So, my thoughts to all our Jewish friends and communities around the world. 🙏

Jewish students won an important legal victory today in the US, relating to the Palestinian protests at UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles):

UCLA Must Ensure Equal Campus Access to Jewish Students, Judge Rules - A pro-Palestinian protest encampment blocked pathways to classrooms and access to finals, plaintiffs say

The judge ruled that if Jewish students couldn't attend classes and exams, the uni should have shut down for all students.

This sets an important legal precedent for similar cases in other states.

That's good to hear. Crazy it's even came to this, and that these so-called activists will still call themselves progressive anti-racists.

Absolutely! All racism is bad except for the one directed at the Jews in & outwith Israel.

Ridiculous!

That's one reason why I've let a lot of Jews know they're not alone on here and on X. 👍

I was trying to type "Am Yisrael Chai" aka "the people (or nation) of Israel live!".

I got it wrong and basically spelled it out letter by letter which is incorrect. Think I'm supposed to go by sound instead. Either way, challenge accepted! 😂

Second post has the correct one from Google translate.

Tisha B’Av (9th of av) fast was yesterday, it’s a 25 hour fast (no food or water) and started Sunday evening, where we read the book of lamentations, sitting on low chairs or the floor and finished at nightfall yesterday. Mourning customs of the 9 days (last and most intense part of the 3 weeks of mourning) finished today at chatzos חצות (a bit after midday) - we keep the mourning customs til halfway through today as the temple continued to burn into the next day. Mourning restrictions are now lifted, and the weight of the last few weeks eased. I can play music again 😊

It was the most painful and intense tisha B’Av I have ever experienced. But it was cathartic in a way. One day devoted to mourning and grief, for October 7th, to cry and grieve, united alongside other Jews around the world

Thanks for explaining the custom and what happens during Tisha B'av, Ella! I had seen some photos of Jews sitting on low chairs reading the Book Of Lamentations on X.

I believe I saw a video of a large crowd of Jews singing at the Western Wall - I forget what it was called? When I heard that, one word came to mind - moving. Must be something else to have been there in that moment with a sense of being as one people.

Amazingly complex, rich history and a beautiful people.

א and ע sound pretty much the same in an Ashkenazi accent, but ע is more guttural in a Sefardi accent.

you need to learn the root words. For example אכל is a root word (connected to eating). You would then conjugate it in multiple ways: אכלתי - I ate, ?אפשר לאכול Can I eat? (Not direct translation), הם אוכלים - they are eating. If you recognise the three letter root word אכל, and you learn how words are usually conjugated, you can start to translate words. E.g past tense first person usually ends ׳תי׳, plural masculine ends ‘ים’ etc

I saw a few videos. The western wall is הכותל המערבי, literally translates to the western wall, usually called the Kotel. It’s the closest place to the Temple Mount that we can (legally) pray today. I believe it was originally a section of the courtyard wall around the Temple Mount.

this is the close of the fast. They are singing אחינו.

our brothers, the house of Israel, who are in trouble or captivity, whether they are standing (abiding) in the sea or on dry land, Hashem should have mercy on them, and bring them out from trouble to comfort, from darkness to light, from captivity to redemption, now, quickly, in a near time.

I'm planning on getting one of those Hebrew for kids books to go along with the more adult one I got. Maybe the Aleph-Bet flash cards too.

No problem, and you're welcome. The same thing occurred at so many other universities.

Going forward, this will make universities much more vigilant about ensuring that protests don't disrupt anyone's access.

More legal developments from the United States to go along with what @MissConductUS posted! 👇

"LA court ordered 2 Palestinian assailant “protestors” to pay more than $1.6 million in damages to their hate crime assault victim, a man who is not Jewish, but who protected his Jewish friends from a caravan of Palestinian-flag-waiving attackers yelling and chanting antisemitic profanities.

Mher Hagopian, an Armenian-American, sued Samer Jaylusi and Xavier Pabon.

According to his lawyer, the $1.6 million in punitive damages was awarded “due to the overwhelming evidence demonstrating the outrageous nature of the antisemitic attack, including explicitly anti-Jewish hate speech captured via text messages.” Two such texts say, “I never got to hit a Jew before so I’m Kinda Happy;” and “I need a blunt and then we go find Jews…”"

US courts beginning to issue rulings in light of clear antisemitic activities in the USA. Undeniable.

There's more fallout from the university protests. The President of Columbia University has resigned so that someone new can take over before the academic year begins in September.

No one was happy with the way she handled the protests. It will be interesting to see how their policies change going forward.

The WSJ had a lot to say last night on their opinion pages regarding the recent court decision against UCLA and the resignation of Columbia's president.

Still Paying for Anti-Israel Campus Protest Chaos - Columbia’s President Minouche Shafik resigns, as UCLA is hit with a court injunction.

and

Democrats vs. the Enraged Left Minouche Shafik’s resignation is a foretaste of next week’s confrontation.

The second piece ties the anti-Israel left in with the rejection of Josh Shapiro as the VP pick for the democrats and discusses what role they may play in the election going forward.
