Antisemitism

I read the posts on here with interest and often the subject of anti semitism comes up. I was brought up in a town in the South East. My mum gave me a book about Anne Frank when I was around 8 and I can remember asking ' what is a Jew?' as I had never met one. When I was about 14 a girl from northern Israel came to my school and I was asked to befriend her and help her settle in. I can remember being fascinated about her life in a Kibbutz and she used to show me
Hebrew writing. I don't recall ever hearing anything anti semitic about her or her brother as the only two Jewish kids - to my knowledge in the school. I also remember in my twenties encountering a group of lads from North London - white something and them having an absolute hatred for Jewish people. I can remember feeling utterly shocked as I'd never heard anti Jewish speak prior to this. Reading some of the recent posts on here it has made me wonder wherever there are pockets in the Uk with Jewish communities that experience antisemitism where the rest of the UK it does not occur as people simply have never met a Jewish person just their life- to their knowledge.Where I live I have only met 4 Jewish people in the Uk in my life and I am 47. The most Jewish people I have met were in Israel when I visited in 2000.

I came across this thread while looking for some info about a Yiddish author [Mendel Mann, if anybody knows a lot about him I have a question please..]
and having checked that it's OK for non-Jewish posters to post here...

well now I find I've nothing very coherent to say, except that you have my wholehearted support in dealing with the incredible levels of antisemitism even I see all around, and I'm not directly affected as you are, so I can only imagine how hard it is.

So a not-very-coherent but very well intentioned message of support to you all.
Zayt gezunt un schtark.

Hmmm now I'm worried, linguistically - I put the verb into the plural, but should the adjectives be in the plural too??🤔

thank you 🥰 I don’t speak Yiddish! I had to google translate 😅

Phew! so you won't be correcting my Yiddish grammar thenSmile
I only dabble in Yiddish, I love languages and especially 'minority' and endangered languages and they don't come much more endangered than Yiddish... It's great to see the renewal of interest in it, and the role the Internet can play in keeping it and other languages alive.

Definitely not me, I only have a smattering of words, but I do know a lot of people who know a lot more 😅 in yeshiva for two years DH had some lectures in Yiddish.

Bloody hell, this is a mainstream comedian but also it seems a racist scumbag. I was thinking this stuff would have been career-ending even a year ago, but his tweets in that thread seem to go back years.

Reginald D C**ter more like.

This isn't OK. He's no better than the scum who incited the far right riots. And people will claim it's free speech or just comedy, or something.

Wow! I'd seen the thing about him abusing some Israeli people in his audience at his Edinburgh show but not all the rest of it. This is pure antisemitism. How has he got away with this?!? Unbelievable.

BeretInParis · 19/08/2024 00:32

It wasn't hate speech. Just a bad joke. Freedom of speech is important and we don't have to like what others say.

What was abhorrent was the way he (as far as I can understand it) encouraged the crowd to hector and jeer the two Israelis (and did so himself) so they felt unsafe and left (slowly as the gentleman was disabled). That is not ok.

What is also not ok is that no one stood up for the Israelis. Not one person in that room supported them. Cowards, all. Or just ignorant racists. You choose. Neither possibility is good.

BeretInParis · 19/08/2024 00:36

Ah, just read the article about the blatant antisemitism after the Israelis left. Disgusting.

Yes, that's the bit that pissed me off yet somehow the bit that no one seems to be reporting.

It's disappointing, I used to like him on panel shows. Hopefully the BBC and others won't have him back now though, and make it clear it's because he's an anti-Semite.

BeretInParis · 19/08/2024 14:25

To my shame, I've seen him live. I resent lining his pockets. Obviously, because I'm such a schnorrer (tightwad). It was at least 15-20 years ago.

Will try not to hold it against you!

I really hope he loses work because of this. I doubt it though, Paul Currie has never been as popular as he is now 🙄 Fucking ridiculous.

BeretInParis · 24/08/2024 13:11

Shocking news @Hélène79. And three times as many antisemitic incidents in France in H1 2024 in comparison to the same period last year. Grr.

cholent99 · 03/09/2024 12:53

Bunnyasmyname · 07/08/2024 21:21

Yeah I totally agreed with you. Not appropriate as we don't have indigenous people here.

Maybe Finchley used it to make sure they haven't missed anybody out to hate us. Got to be inclusive.

Sorry to be pedantic, but the indigenous people are those descended from The Celts and Anglo-Saxons who have lived here for over a thousand of years. There are still many of them in the country. Not sure why you are saying there are no indigenous people here - many of them can trace their lineage back over a thousand years. The Celts have been around since before Christianity.

Celts were the indigenes before the Angles and Saxons came, bloody Anglo Saxon newcomers 😂

0palfrootee · 03/09/2024 15:05

I think the point here is that the descendants of Britain's indigenous people are white British and not generally considered an ethnic minority/ minoritised group, unlike eg in the US and Canada where the term BIPOC originates. BIPOC does not translate well on this side of the Atlantic but I have seen it used by well meaning progressives with apparently little thought to what they are saying.

quantumbutterfly · 03/09/2024 15:33

It's possible the celts (Scots, Welsh, Irish, Cornish(?)) see themselves as an ethnic minority.

I went to see Bend it Like Beckham with a majority Indian audience many years ago, there's a line where Jess (Indian) tells Joe (Irish) that he doesn't understand racism and he replies that of course he does he's Irish, There was much laughter in the cinema.

Anyway, I will not detract from your thread, this is a place for mutual support, I suppose it just reminds me that perception of racism/prejudice is heightened for people who are part of the group that are being targeted. And the acceptance of the targeting of certain groups worries me even if I am not part of that group.

Coffeeatthelocalmarket · 03/09/2024 19:56

That was specifically Irish, not an 'ethnic Celtic minority' thing though.

Interestingly, in 2017 the Irish government granted Irish travellers ethnic minority status in Ireland. Irish travellers are historically and genetically Irish but the population separated from the settled community centuries ago. Travellers definitely are subject to racism today, in Ireland as well as outside it. (Though they weren't the group referred to in Bend It Like Beckham.)

The pro-Palestine marches being not antisemitic, again.

A demonstration in Leeds. Speaker says in Arabic: ‘Every Jew here is a whore.’ He’s told he can’t say that so he changes it to: ‘Every Zionist here is a whore.’ Antizionism is antisemitism.

Anti-Semitism in London is so bad they've had to introduce a new bus route to keep Jewish people safe 😳

I'm struck, though, by Khan saying that the communities have been lobbying for 16 years. I hope it helps.

knitnerd90 · 06/09/2024 06:48

It may be partly about safety but honestly, travelling from GG to SH was really not very convenient either.

Humdingerydoo · 06/09/2024 07:19

I understand the route might be needed for other reasons, but that's not the reason it is actually being trialled now. Even Mr Khan seems to be saying it's to keep Jewish people safe.
