Mumsnet is getting worse

1000 replies

Seriously. Is it the same few people just name changing or is it really this toxic in the UK? There is so much poisonous Jewish hatred on here. I'm not talking hatred of Israel, just vile antisemitism on so many posts now.

I truly think I have to step away before I lose faith in humanity. Why does MN seem to attract so many hateful posters? Maybe it's the anonymity.

I can't keep calling it out. Im exhausted and actually deeply disturbed by it now.

I just can't bear reading the rubbish and hope that by popping on these awful threads and saying my piece that lurkers will think again and question the rubbish they are reading.
On a side note - I think the BBC are getting a lot more anti Israel. The six o'clock headline last night was questioning the veracity of IDF videos inside Al Shifa. And that's after Orla Guerin and the faux pas that they apologised for.

I agree with what you say about the BBC. I usually think the BBC gets things approximately right and gets flak on both sides of any particular argument. But I've been pretty shocked by the tone of some of their coverage of this conflict. The fact that they've already had to issue a couple of apologies is telling.

Trulywonderful · 17/11/2023 22:40

I got curious and scrolled down the list of threads on the conflict board.

Four pages of threads. A lot of threads don't have many posts.

Only four threads have topped out at 1000. So they have ended. Two are talking about the marches
So people finding the marches to behave an antisemitic vibe pretty much are responsible for at least half the posts on those threads.

The other two are the bombing at the front of the hospital that turned out to be a misfired Hamas rocket. So again lots of us got involved in that one. Then I forget what the forth was but I can imagine something people felt needing to correct whatever narrative was being pushed.

All that seems interesting to me. It seems that most mumsneters are only really getting involved on the conflict board to protect honestly, the Jewish community, shout at the odd antisemitic newbie and debate the real subjects or facts rather than uncertain social media reports or Instagram news.

This gives me some hope and comfort that mumsneters in general see past some iffy threads that are echo chambers.

25milesfromhome · 18/11/2023 14:40

Looking at it that way did give me a bit of hope @Trulywonderful So many of the threads are just short lived echo chambers and any attempt at rational discussion gets so quickly derailed and dominated by the buzzword keyboard warriors picking a fight because they have nothing useful to add. I’ve no issue with the posters who can actually articulate their disagreement without sounding like a vengeful toddler, just the ones attempting to shut down every conversation.

It’s also fascinating to see how desperate some people are to have their bias confirmed that they willingly swallow any old rubbish from posters claiming to have spent time there or done ‘academic studies’ (lol) but lacking even the most basic knowledge they’d have if they’d ever set foot in Israel. Using Al Jazeera as a primary source of ‘objective’ information is just embarrassing.

Stomacharmeleon · 18/11/2023 17:23

@25milesfromhome I have never engaged with so many on here that are 'from Israel' or 'recently moved out' but claim to hate it and everything it stands for.

What I also Don't understand is why when traumatised and on the 'wrong side of history' spouting posters seem to have a gcse English way of descriptive writing.... in as much detail as possible. Providing it mirrors what their mate said before...

I also have my doubts about one or two in particular who flirt with both 'sides' but in a provocative way.

Anyway just my thoughts....

Trulywonderful · 29/10/2023 21:25

I think you had it when you say you can't teach stupid

That and people that just don't want to listen or change

So much trying to twist words to make people seem racist or bigoted themselves. I am finding that tactic rather funny now. It shows a desperation to try and discredit posters they find threatening.

We have at least 18 months of this conflict and then the after effects too. I would probably try to pace yourselves. However the general public and mumsnet will soon get clued up on these people. Then they will have no choice but to hide their jew hate. That in many ways to me is worse. I like to know if someone is a fuckwit.

Trulywonderful, you did some great posts in the SBC thread this afternoon 😊

Humdingerydoo · 21/11/2023 22:12

I had somehow missed there is a group here for Jewish Mumsnetters. There are some pretty gross opinions out there, aren't there?! I have to keep taking a few days off from social media due to the intense levels of antisemitism. It's just too much.

Stomacharmeleon · 21/11/2023 22:14

@Humdingerydoo I wondered who might pop on first considering.... you know....

I think my head might be about to explode with sheer frustration.

@Trulywonderful I have noticed that....

25milesfromhome · 22/11/2023 12:30

Imagine coming to spy on a minority board with the intent to police and dominate its tone and content. And the takeaway from lurking on that minority board where the minority are discussing many different topics related to their minority is: isn’t it sinister how Jewish posters are so cold and disconnected about the killing of Palestinian children? All Jewish people, after all, being held accountable for the actions of Evil Israel, and that being all they should talk about, ever. And just why are Jewish people so oversensitive about being called genocide supporters and white colonisers? Hoo boy.

Trulywonderful · 22/11/2023 13:40

It is a mystery isn't it

I essentially stopped posting in the Middle East section because I could see very few are interested in actual discussion, prefer echo chambers and certainly are NOT interested in a perspective coming from a terrorism, security and counter-terrorism viewpoint.

Additionally, I simply tired of the constant emotional appeals fallacies.

And I did stress the conflict would get ugly and many wouldn't be able to handle certain images well. I was right.

This conflict will go on for some time yet, so no real point anyone posting constantly or trying to counter everything. There will be a time for countering certain things and it's not yet. 👍

Trulywonderful · 22/11/2023 14:21

That is pretty much how I feel about most the board other than ones about hate crimes etc.

I am finding the feminist board have been having better debates and conversations about the facts and details of the conflict than the middle eastern board. The feminists tend to be way more knowledgeable than most on the conflict boards too

Trulywonderful · 22/11/2023 15:14

I have a 1000 word document to write up and edit tonight. If anyone sees me on mumsnet tonight after this tell me to sod off and get some work done, please 😂

Stomacharmeleon · 22/11/2023 16:27

@DownNative Star completely agree (sorry if that seems patronising can't find the applause!)

ProvincialLady1 · 22/11/2023 17:06

@DownNative I miss your posts in the ME section. It's a shame a lot of the more educated posters have been chased off. But probably not worth it at the moment.

Brumbies · 22/11/2023 17:16

I've had my posts deleted where I've been in support of Israel. I've written to the DM as I'm so incensed by the way Mumsnet allows such antisemitic posts.

Towerofsong · 22/11/2023 17:34

Someone was posting last night that they come over here to read our posts and report the ones they don't like.

Today's posts seem particularly vitriolic. I've been feeling a bit more resilient for a couple of days but after 10 minutes on the other boards I now feel like either putting my head through a wall, or packing up and moving to Israel. Haven't figured out which yet!

Stomacharmeleon · 22/11/2023 17:39

@Towerofsong I will be coming with you.
It's the same posters though upping the anti with what they can get away with.
I am making a formal complaint to Mumsnet regarding anti semitism and the sliding of things into holocaust denial/ acceptance. 'You can see how it happened' type posts.

I do have to say though that Mumsnet seem pretty quick to delete if I point it out. It's more the obvious bots/ those than come on in the middle of the night to spew hatred.

Towerofsong · 22/11/2023 17:45

Is there a way to stop certain boards showing up at all? I never added the Conflict in the ME board to my favourite topics but every time I open chat the threads are there. I'm on the phone app.

Towerofsong · 22/11/2023 17:47

There are threads tonight where they are basically scourging the internet looking for any dirt to post. They are all but trying to paint Jews as having horns and enjoying the blood of children.. it's outrageously close to that.

Towerofsong · 22/11/2023 17:58

£7million pledged by government in the budget today to tackle antisemitism.

Maybe they could start on Mumsnet 🙄🙄

Well, upholding white supremacy is a full time job you know. There is literally no direction in which the dedicated antisemite won’t pivot and no lows they won’t stoop to in their tireless quest to tell their truth.
