That's amazing news! So happy for you.
I had my transfer today and it was an absolute shambles. I'm still in shock I think. I'll explain but I apologise in advance, it is a bit of a long one.
I flew back from Ireland early this morning for my transfer which was scheduled for 12 midday. Landed into Heathrow at 8am and pottered about getting food to pass the time. By 11am I'd gone to the hospital, had a last wee and drunk a litre of water and went to sit in the waiting room for an hour.
Got called in at 12 had my hairnet, lab coat overall thing and shoe covers on and was led into theatre. The embryologist started explaining that my embryo had thawed perfectly and re expanded and they were happy to be transferring a 5AB embryo. Told me to undress my bottom half. LUCKILY, I had a vague memory that the gradings of my wife's embryos were all 4 something's but I know they can develop more during thawing so I double checked that this was one of my wife's embryos. (For context I underwent a full cycle, 3 frozen embryo transfers... All failed. Second full cycle and the first frozen embryo resulted in my son. Have 12 embryos of mine in storage but wanted to try with my wife's eggs. She underwent a full cycle in June/July and got 3 embryos).
The embryologist confirmed that the thawed embryo was from 2024 i.e. one of mine not my wife's.
Cue the embryologist starting to freak out, told me we'd have to cancel the cycle as they now didn't have the correct consents. I asked how long it takes to thaw an embryo and she said an hour and then they watch to see if it re expands for an hour.
She went and got her boss. Her boss knew this was bad and immediately asserted that the embryologists were not at fault. She asked whether I had ever made it clear that we wanted to use my wife's eggs...I was shaking as I said categorically YES we were quoted and had paid for a 'donor IVF cycle' and have discussed it at length at every appointment. She had to take my wife's verbal consent and I had to wait until 3pm for the transfer to go ahead.
She explained that my embryo would be refrozen but that there was no guarantee it would survive another thaw.
I'm home now and just trying to calm my brain with all the emotions that I had to go through in just a few hours and also so angry when I go through the 'what ifs'.
I could have been lucky enough to get pregnant, think I'm carrying my wife's baby only to give birth to another mini me, before realising their mistake. Obviously, we would have still been delighted but that wasn't what we were expecting or what we had envisioned for our future family. Hence my wife going through the whole egg collection.
Then hormonal me is really affected (more than I would have imagined being) that rather than just feeling excitement and joy at being PUPO... For the first time ever I feel like we played God and potentially harmed one of my babies and teased it by nearly giving it a chance at life, then changing our mind and risking that it will never thaw again.
Sorry for the brain dump but my wife is still away and I was not emotionally prepared for the shock of today. It's really taken the shine off what I had hoped would be such an exciting day.
