PGT-A testing of frozen embryos

BellaRosex · 06/11/2024 16:23

Hi all,

Has anyone ever opted to have their embryos PGT-A tested after they've already been frozen? I regret not doing it at the time but there was nothing in my circumstances that dictated doing it and my clinic didn't advise.

Now following recurrent miscarriages, I'm starting to consider whether I should. I also have multiple fibroids (one submucosal) and the others intramural, which grew during IVF. I've also been considering surgery to remove these but I've been warned it could end up doing more harm than good.

I can't be sure if my issues are uterine or due to the embryo so thought at least PGT-A testing would help me narrow down potential issues.

Just curious if anyone has done this and whether their embryos have survived the process. Worried about damaging otherwise good embryos.

Many thanks in advance 🙏🏻

@MrsBowen thats a great result , you will be super happy , are you doing your transfer soon ? Best of luck 💖

LimeBird · 03/12/2024 17:53

@MrsBowen amazing work! You must be so pleased 😁 gives me hope too

MrsBowen · 03/12/2024 18:54

I am so thrilled!! I can't stop smiling. Can anyone tell me how likely those grade embryos are to be ok?

Nk11 · 10/12/2024 16:44

Hi just updating that I’ve had a transfer today of a euplpid embryo that had been previously frozen, thawed, biopsied and refrozen and the embryologist today said it thawed perfectly fine and said it shows a sign of a strong embryo and that most cope well with it so fingers crossed. Still have one frozen euploid and one low level mosaic.

hopefullsosbry · 10/12/2024 20:50

@Nk11 ohh super exciting .. best of luck !! How are you feeling ?

I am waiting to find out if any of my embryos have made it to day 5 (tomorrow) and if any are ok to send for testing 🤞🏽💫

This is positive to hear!!! Thank you for sharing! Would you mind if I asked the reason why you decided to thaw and get them biopsied? Wishing you all the baby dust X

@BellaRosex we’ve had 5 failed implantations (6 embryos) and we had 6 remaining as our second round we got 10 embryos. Due to our second round being the nhs round they never recommended testing and also I was only 31 so they said most would be normal. Tested the 6 remaining because nothing shows up for me everything looks perfect on every scan I have and every test. Out of the 6 only 2 were euploid so below the statistics. At this stage transfer number 6 I feel like people think im crazy to keep trying but I’m only 32 feels so sad that nothings worked up to now.

Nk11 · 11/12/2024 22:54

@hopefullsosbry thank you I feel just normal really I’m very anxious to think anything positive really I feel like it will never happen at this stage. I hope you have had good news today x

@BellaRosex thank you and yes I think it’s down to individual circumstances. What I would say is that there is a lot of negative comments made towards testing frozen embryos and the harm it may cause them. I don’t know if mine will work, or if it would have been more likely to work if not previously thawed but the embryologist I spoke to was not concerned at all and said most of them survive the double freeze and thaw without any issue and if it didn’t it was more likely a sign that it wouldn’t have developed further anyway.

hopefullsosbry · 12/12/2024 17:40

I have some good news to share, the 4 that fertilised made it to blast, 2 day 5 and 2 day 6 .. so Ed have sent the biopsy away so should hear back in around 10 days if any are euploid 🤞🏽, @Nk11 so sorry you have had so many failed transfers, I can relate as we also have had 6 failed transfers (4 ending in miscarriages with 2 nothing at all) as well as 2 natural miscarriages, we still have 2 frosties but decided not to add them with this lot for testing as the nurse told me it reduces there success by 20% .. I just believed her at the time and we didn’t wana risk it incase they might work , but now after being on this thread and researching it more there seems to be not such a risk ?! I don’t know why she said that ? She didn’t mention the risk of them not surviving the thaw she just said it reduces the quality due to the re freezing /thawing .. I actually wish we had sent these two frozen from May along with this lot but it’s too late now, I think ivf is so conflicting and each clinic tell you complete opposites sometimes it’s so frustrating and confusing what to do for the best ! 🥴

Nk11 · 12/12/2024 18:14

@hopefullsosbry thats great news fingers crossed for you. Is this the first time you’ve done pgt? Maybe that’s true if it does but I just couldn’t leave 6 in storage and move onto a new round without wondering whether any of those would work. Also couldn’t go through transfers again without knowing so it probably is a risk and I’d definitely test from fresh if I needed to go again. The other issue I have is I don’t really rate my clinic or the previous 2 UK clinics I’ve had. I feel like a number and not really properly looked at so if I do a new round I need to consider where that should be.

Yeh 1st round we have sent any for testing. I don’t think there is to be honest from researching, the risk doesn’t seem as high as the nurse was making out to me, i think you have done 100% the right thing and wish we had sent the others but never mind. I get what you mean about feeling like a number also, I have heard good things about Greece with ivf, this is our last round but if we did ever do another I think I would go to Greece, best of luck for you!

AmIabigmeanie · 20/12/2024 04:45

I had loads of failed transfers and was down to "crap" embryos only so decided to do a new round and pgt test. They all came back abnormal so I assumed we were just producing bad quality.

I could have tested the remaining frozen ones but didn't want to risk damaging them further. The one that is now my DD only just survived the thaw for transfer, she definitely couldn't have been refrozen if we had tried to test her, I'm so glad we didn't do that!

hopefullsosbry · 20/12/2024 13:01

@AmIabigmeanie thanks for sharing your story .. yeh that was the right decision I guess.. that’s amazing .. super happy for your result .. 🥰

hopefullsosbry · 16/01/2025 05:44

Hi, just wanted to update, we eventually got our results of our 4 embryo biopsy’s back and 3 came back not viable and 1 had insufficient DNA for testing .. we now have the option to rebiopsy that one, we are thinking to re biopsy and then send the other 2 we already have frozen for biopsy PGT-a also , just not sure what to do for the best, ?!
Has anyone ever had a no result due to no intact DNA ? Is this an error the clinic have made in sampling the wrong part of the embryo ? Why would there be no DNA ?

@Nk11 how are you getting on with your transfer ? Hope things are going well?
@MrsBowen did you get your transfer at all yet or any news when you will transfer your euploid ?

Nk11 · 16/01/2025 22:33

@hopefullsosbry Hi sorry to hear about your results but a blessing for you to not have transferred abnormal embryos from experience. Not sure on the one they couldn’t biopsy but personally it would seem sensible to re-try and send the others you have too.

I am tentative but currently 8 weeks pregnant from my euploid transfer. Saw the heartbeat and baby at 7 weeks so there is finally some hope. Cant say the anxiety is any less given this is the first time I’ve ever been pregnant. I am not well either I feel like I’ve been hit with a hangover and stomach bug at the same time 🤢

and also my embryos were previously frozen and thawed to be biopsied and so far it’s worked so hope that brings some more optimism around that x

hopefullsosbry · 03/05/2025 13:13

@Nk11 hi, sorry just updating, that’s amazing news on your pregnancy and heart beat, I hope things are still going well!?
we decided to send the previously frozen two along with the one that had no DNA to resend that only, we are just in the process of transferring out frozen two to the other clinic, fingers crossed we get one eupliod, should have results by end of May 🤞🏽this will be our last chance I think.
@MrsBowen how did things go with you if you don’t mind mr asking? Hope you are well and you got to transfer ?
