no fucking way!?

what of?

bran · 30/04/2010 16:11

I just read that in the Irish Times. He was still very young. I remember him being on the radio in my teenage years, most DJs were (and probably still are) prats who often spoke without engaging their brains, but he never was.

Magaly · 30/04/2010 16:11

you're right

here

TulipsInTheSunshine · 30/04/2010 16:13

fuck

I know it shouldn't be surprising considering he wasn't exactly a picture of good health but it's still awfully young to just die like that. He's younger than my dad

Much as i disaggreed with alot of his opinions he could still make me cry with laughter when i listened to his show.

I grew up listening to him, can't believe it's true

RIP

BudaisintheZONE · 30/04/2010 16:13

Just spoke to my sis and apparently early this morning he hadn't appeared in for show so alarm was raised and he was found in apartment. Heart attack they think. News was withheld till all his family were informed.

Larry Gogan was just crying on radio on his show.

I am almost 46 and he was from near where I grew up. Knew some of the same people a long time ago.

I know, when he hosted Operation Transformation, I kept hoping he was going to take part. It will give that show a creepy gravitas if they continue it next winter with a new host.

RedLentil · 30/04/2010 16:31

Heartbreaking isn't it. Dave Fanning was crying on the radio. The poor fellow doing 2fm now is in bits.

I have such strong memories of standing next to the radio in my teens, listening to him draw out all the stories and emotions that didn't have a place anywhere else in Irish broadcasting at the time.

Magaly · 30/04/2010 16:35

They're all crying. Apparently rte didn't put it up on the website while they were trying to reach his daughter in america and miriam o'callaghan "tweeted" his death. bloody twitter.

It is so sad and I never realised his youngest was so young. he was always talking about them and about how proud he was of his kids. I used to listen to him every morning on the web and thought it strange he was missing this morning, He will be missed.

stleger · 30/04/2010 16:58

Joe Duffy had his Funny Friday thing on when I heard - he can't have known. Gerry was and will remain a 'legend'!

Magaly · 30/04/2010 17:00

I'm glad he wasn't actually divorced from Morah.

Magaly · 30/04/2010 17:01

can't believe GAY Byrne has outlived him..

dinosaurinmybelly · 30/04/2010 17:01

I have such fond memories of his radio show - what a lovely man he was. My heart goes out to his friends and family...

chipmonkey · 30/04/2010 17:22

dh just told me 5 minutes ago. I can not believe it. I listened to him every morning. He was always so full of life. How could he be dead?

Magaly · 30/04/2010 17:44

I know. It's very sad. He had a way of raising very serious issues without being mawkish. He was a very intelligent, humorous guy.

RIP Gerry

Did anyone hear his show yesterday? He was so tactful to that young girl who was smacking her kids, he obviously didn't agree and was trying to help her see a different way of disciplining them. Gerry at his finest.

I have just had to turn off rte news it is so sad to watch Joe Duffy crying for Gerry, he can't even speak about the children.
To have his last show about his garden, bag packing in the supermarket and parenting just sums up the man. He was a real person and let that come across to his listeners

nicm · 30/04/2010 18:38

for his xwife and children. can't believe this, loved his show, he was never afraid to speak his mind!
