Am I the only one shocked at the ridiculous sentence given to the 'Moody' parents today who neglected their daughter?

I can't believe what I have just seen on the news ! The couple (surnames Moody, didn't catch their first names) who have been found guilty of neglecting their 8 year old daughter and locking her in her room, bolting the windows, painting the window so she couldnt see out etc (I don't even want to type the rest, it's so disgusting - you can google it to see)....

She was found hanged by a cord in her room after all this.... and the parents have just received 12 months imprisonment, possibly less with good behaviour.

Has this country gone completely insane?

I agree it's not long enough but I don't any sentence would make them see the error of their ways.

Personally I would just have them sterilized and a tattoo on their forhead along the lines of 'Don't let me near your children'. Cheaper and more effective.

Very sad story , the mother said she was too unwell to look after her (for 4 weeks), the girl had SN's, surely she could have contacted SS to get help?

I have 2 dd's with SN's and even if i was dying i would manage to tend to them or get help.

12 months is not enough for letting your child die in such a cruel way .

2shoes · 09/04/2010 17:08

omg that ia a joke, they should have got a lot longer

Jux · 09/04/2010 17:12

Tattooing on the forehead isn't a bad idea....

AgentZigzag · 09/04/2010 17:22

I've just read about this on the Beeb website, I've put a link to the site cos your OP doesn't do justice to the appaulling experiences this little girl had to deal with (no offence to you OP )

It's not often I read a new story open mouthed...but how has this been allowed to happen again and again?? It seems every other week there's a story about children who have been let down by government departments set up to protect children who have already slipped through so many nets.

I read their sentences as 12 years. 12 MONTHS?? What an injustice to the girl, and to all the other children this will inevitably happen to because their 'carers' will know they can get away with it

BAFE · 09/04/2010 17:57

how could the mother not have gone into her dds bedroom for 4 weeks? What about putting her to bed, tucking her in,reading her a bedtime story. She didn't do any of that did she

That poor girl, its a crying shame that a child could be left in circumstances as horrific as that.

I read that in horror & disbelief when i came to the part that said their pet lizards & spiders were cleaned out regularly.

How could they leave that poor girl for 4 weeks with no contact? What did she do for her meals? Or to have a wash?

The saddest part of this story is how many other children are at this minute living like that?

Plus their sentences are an absolue joke.

soapboxqueen · 09/04/2010 18:08

I don't think people do these things because they think they can get away with it. Would you do this if you thought there'd be no punnishment? No, of course you wouldn't. These poeple are either mentally ill or jsut cruel. Either way they can't be allowed to be carers for children again. Hence why I suggested a few snips in the correct places would be in order.

SuSylvester · 09/04/2010 18:08

presume there was stuff
maybe thy had been on remand for years?

2shoes · 09/04/2010 18:10

SuSylvester she only died last september

SuSylvester · 09/04/2010 18:11

ah wel
i am sure they folllowed the guidelines - guilty plea reduction and all
it does seem short.

2shoes · 09/04/2010 18:11

short!!! a joke more like.

RunawayWife · 09/04/2010 18:14

Public flogging is too good for the likes of them vile evil people

paisleyleaf · 09/04/2010 18:15

I can't get my head around this story AT ALL.
The cleaning out the lizards thing is awful.
And the sentence is disgusting - if they're mentally ill and require help why go to prison? They decided they are fit for prison, so why not for much longer?

2shoes · 09/04/2010 18:43

omg they have just had it on the news.........the poor child had to use a drawer as a toilet.....
and these cruel people got 12 fucking months

AgentZigzag · 09/04/2010 18:50

I'm just guessing, but I would say their sentences would be due to the actual crimes they were charged with, ie what the police could prove against them.

I remember in the Baby Peter case, his murderers (don't want to call her a mother) got short sentences because the police couldn't determine which of them was responsible for his death.

So it could be that they weren't charged with murder as they didn't directly kill her themselves, or with manslaughter because the little girl had 'hanged herself'.

I don't agree with corporal punishment, but this leaves me wanting to hurt them like they hurt her.

ZZZenAgain · 09/04/2010 18:52

I'm coming round to corporal punishment these days.

I used to think it was evil but I'm really coming round to it

2shoes · 09/04/2010 18:57

i hope their lives are hell

Alouiseg · 09/04/2010 19:00

Utter vermin, and that's doing vermin a disservice. I wish we could appeal to get that sentence increased, preferably to include sterilisation, the aforementioned tattoo and a loooong prison sentence that would inevitably end with their painful demise.

Doodleydoo · 09/04/2010 19:01

I am horrified by the behaviour of these parents as they obviously knew they were in the wrong or they wouldn't have changed the childs schools when approached.

what I keep finding more and more horrendous is that even when people specifically schools, report to social services this kind of concern with regards to treatment - why is more not done - I quote
"visited in august but there was no one at home, and no follow up visit" surely somewhere along the line the training for these people is not correct? I am genuinely bewildered as its not as if its the first time or one local authority!

Don't get me wrong - I do sometimes think that some children are taken from their parents too quickly on occasion, but frankly if the school raised concerns about my dd and a social worker visited I think I would be able to prove that nothing like this was occuring in my house and therefore not have a problem. But I have never been in this situation so I wouldn't know.

All I would say is that I am horrified by their sentence and feel dreadful for the life of this poor poor child.

AgentZigzag · 09/04/2010 19:06

It makes your heart break to think of the days, hours and seconds the little girl had to live through, starved and longing for human contact, love and warmth. Like BAFE said, no tucking in at night, just more long lonely hours in a shit covered prison.

There aren't enough social workers. It seems stupid that a child can be left in such situations but there are limited resources and far too many children at risk. Social services have to do what they can. Putting money into social services isn't a vote winner, especially since it would meaning tax increases or serious money being diverted from somewhere else.
