Frankie Boyle on Down Syndrome - horrific

Lymond · 08/04/2010 18:52

interesting blog post from a mother of a DS daughter who was blasted by a 5-10 minute diatribe containing all the old stereotypes about people with DS at a Frakie Boyle show. I'm turning off any TV show he's on in future.

blog here

Grauniad article on it here

stillenacht is spot on
"I think she is trying to say that they dress their rants up as 'PC gone mad' and that the media like them because they pander to society's need to backlash against the PC world we live in, so they are the media's reaction to PC gone mad and hence quite PC for the media."

they are hypocrites

StayFrosty, you are right, Jeremy Clarkson isn't PC. So yes I am wrong, I agree that the BBC do sometimes put on non-PC presenters.

But this opens up another avenue, how much non-PCness is acceptable (i.e. PC)? But I am starting to get tired myself along with everyone else, so it is probably best not to go there

claig · 09/04/2010 16:06

I agree with what mrsruffalo said about 'Little Britain'. In my opinion it is another example of a deeply misogynistic show made by right-on lauded PC comedians. I feel sad that so many of my friends think it is really funny.

I know that not many people like the Daily Mail on here, but I think it was only the fact that the Mail picked up the Ross/Brand story and ran with it, that forced the BBC to do something about it. The BBC were prevaricating and trying to wriggle out of it and didn't want to deal their prized stars. I hope that the newspapers will be able to force broadcasters to hold people like Boyle to account as well.

2shoes · 09/04/2010 16:13

i get it now, all the use of pc got me confused, I didn't ever think you were thinking it was ok.
disablism is not taking seriously, not even on here. (as in mn)

fartmeistergeneral · 09/04/2010 16:16

OK, I haven't read any of this thread but I did read the story. My only problem with this woman complaining is that she went to see Frankie Boyle who is known for being totally irreverend about EVERYTHING - and obviously likes his humour. So if he was slagging off gay people, people with dementia, Rebecca Adlington's looks etc etc etc - then she obviously finds that funny. It's just when he mocked something that was close to her heart (her daughter's condition) that she decided to contact the media etc.

I loathe Frankie Boyle, I don't find that kind of thing funny - but it annoyed me a bit that she was willing to laugh at the rest of his material just because it didn't directly affect her.

stillenacht · 09/04/2010 16:16

claig - I think it was Fiona Pilkington and her daughter

I agree with your posts just wanted to settle that.

Words fail me for the poor woman and her daughter....

fartmeistergeneral · 09/04/2010 16:19

Off topic - but Stayfrosty, the interview I read with the granddaughter, she was delighted with the whole thing - she hadn't seen her granddad for years and made quite a bit of money out of the affair. I also don't think she naively slept with RB. Anyway, way off topic.

claig · 09/04/2010 16:20

thanks stillenacht, I didn't remember that correctly

claig · 09/04/2010 16:25

off topic, but agree with fartmeistergeneral, I think there was much more to the Ross/Brand affair than meets the eye and everyone stood to gain. But it backfired on them because the Mail picked up the story and created such a stink that it couldn't be ignored.

fartmeistergeneral · 09/04/2010 17:31

The thing is that although I don't particularly find Frankie Boyle funny, many people do and I accept that. Actually, I love Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross but obviously lots of people don't. We need diversity. That RB/JR show was broadcast at 10pm onwards. Only his fans would listen to it. (I do believe that Andrew Sachs deserved an apology for the answering machine message, which he got from RB, JR and the BBC - the matter should have ended there.)

I shudder to think of the BBC going back to the days of Les Dennis, Frank Carson and Lenny Henry. The BBC playing it safe and fearing offence is NOT progress.

If there was a Frankie Boyle special on TV, I simply wouldn't watch it.

VeronicaMars · 09/04/2010 17:51

I agree with Fart.....it's exactly what came into my head when I was reading it.

I can't stand Frankie Boyle, his jokes are not funny and I've seen him been interviewed and didn't like him at all.

if there was a campaign to picket Boyle's shows that would help in gainiong publicity and changing attitudes

whomovedmychocolate · 09/04/2010 18:19

It's interesting that female comedians seem to be disappearing and being replaced by, well frankly, idiots.

It used to be that there were a number of popular female comedians to balance out the blokey humour, but now we seem to have Jo Brand and Shafi? (sp? have only heard her on the radio). Victoria Wood, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders etc. you don't hear from so much these days, Linda Smith of course, has a reasonable excuse!

Even that odd woman who dresses up as chav girls and old ladies (umm Mrs Merton, name escapes me) seems to have done a bunk.

claig · 09/04/2010 18:25

Mrs Merton is Caroline Ahern.
Good point female comedians are thin on the ground. Catherine Tate is good, I hope she is still going

There's still a fair few female comics about but not many stand-ups. Unfortunately there is a real lack of talent (imho) this side of the water. Off the top of my head sharon horgan, the women from man/woman, tamzin (green/vgreere?) and caoline ahern as well as others are writing great tv.
Unfortunately on the stand-up circuit the likes of lucy porter and Gina Yashere seem to be the ones who are getting ahead and getting some attention, and frankly both are appalling.
Does anyone know of any good female stand-ups on the circuit at the moment?

claig · 09/04/2010 19:03

Sharon Horgan is great, shame they cancelled that series she did for BBC4

stillenacht · 09/04/2010 19:03

Agree Lucy Porter and Gina Yahsere are shockingly bad.

sneezecake · 09/04/2010 19:10

what an absolute wanker he is hope his face is burnt off in a big vat of acid!
(sorry if that has already been said, not had time to read whole thread)

LetThereBeRock · 09/04/2010 19:12

No I think it's safe to say you're the first to mention a big vat of acid.

stillenacht · 09/04/2010 19:27
