I think that the Tory Party, rather than the Camerons have been exceedingly cynical about this. It was only a couple of weeks ago that they were announcing the unveiling of SamCam as their secret weapon, despite the fact they would have known she was in the early stages of what must be a very stressful and emotionally charged pregnancy for her and David.

gypsymummy · 23/03/2010 11:50

i can't believe this was the first item on all major news bulletins yesterday..even if this baby is born after the father becomes PM it still does not mean anything .. .God I am so disgusted by the way news is prioritised sometimes..ok congrats to the happy couple but otherwise what does it have to do with poltics unless and we know this is the fact it will be exploited big time to humanize an otherwise inhuman and indecent political arena..

v true stan

morningpaper · 23/03/2010 12:01

actually that is really grim isn't it the more I think about it

launching your 10-week pregnant wife as your "secret weapon" and telling Britain to "get ready" via Alan Titchmarsh

not nicey, sorry

If the Tories get in, the cuts they plan to social service budgets will mean that parents of disabled children may well end up losing their after-school clubs, nappies, respite services, occupational therapy support for equipment at home, etc etc.

While I can see that the Tory leader is an individual with a family and a desperately sad bereavement, I also think that it would be naive to assume that politically, the Tories won't try to spin David Cameron's new shot at paternity for all it is worth. And if they get back into power, I have got a feeling that David Cameron won't give a flying monkey's about me as an individual with a family, and how immeasurably more difficult he will make the life of my disabled little girl. And there won't be a damn thing I'll be able to do about it to avoid the impact of those cuts, because unlike the Camerons, I do not have the vast personal wealth that tends to make coping with difficult situations just that little bit easier

The Tories will still look after their rich friends while the rest of us are told to tighten our belts until we pass out- and their party machine will certainly use any means at their disposal to win the election, including this pregnancy.

As I don't personally know the Camerons, I did not assume that this thread would be expected to be a list of personal congratulations for them (perhaps somebody could have set one up?), but that it would include some commentary on what this news would mean for the Conservative election campaign. Yet people are getting upset and offended, as though we are only supposed to respond as "mothers" in empathy with a family who lost their disabled child? I bear David Cameron no ill-will whatsoever personally, but I can't see his party showing my family with a disabled and sickly child any empathy whatsoever. So when I hear news that to me means a likely boost to the Tory poll results, I do feel that I can comment cynically on that on the "In the News" topic, without being treated like a disgrace to message boards and mothers everywhere. Because the Tories will be more cynical in their use of this pregnancy than anybody.

well said BOF

electrofagz · 23/03/2010 12:40

"Gosh, you've got a short memory. Did Tony Blair not become a new dad to Leo when he was PM?"

That's a good joke

Ha ha MP - those naked forearms! Tis so obviously a take on the Athena 'man with baby' poster

Shameless! And ever so slightly WRONG.

weegiemum · 23/03/2010 13:16

Every time I see the man I have to shake off the feeling that he's been constructed, possibly out of plasticine ....

BitOfFun · 23/03/2010 13:16

I have got a disabled child, Fio- she goes to an afterschool club once a week, which is FANTASTIC, and gives us a couple of hours in which I can actually cook a meal instead of having to wait for her to be settled in bed. She gets nappies (ok, they aren't great, but i couldn't afford supermarket ones forever). OT have been to visit and are helping me to apply for funding for a safe bedroom for her (she has pulled floorboards up and ceiling tiles down, and keeps hurting herself). Respite- no, not yet, but I'm hopeful. Direct payments- I decided I couldn't manage the money side of, and I can't easily find someone who could cope with taking her out, or thnk of anywhere they could safely go, so I've declined that for now.

But all those little bits of help (which have taken a LNG long time to put in place) make an enormous difference to the quality of life she has with me. But a Tory government won't care about that- social services will have to make cuts somewhere, and all those little services for families that might just stop you wanting to jump in a canal- well, they'll be the first to go.

morningpaper · 23/03/2010 13:17

yy to Athena, made me think of that straight away

they must have expected to announce the pregnancy to coincide with it

I suppose we should be glad he is wearing a shirt

elliott · 23/03/2010 13:19

I think the fact that they can even contemplate having another baby at this time suggests that there is no intention whatsoever of Dave being subjected to 'sleepless nights and vomit on suit'.

Clarissimo · 23/03/2010 13:22

Hmm, I am inclined towards BOF's take- its far from perfect (Fio its Peachy) but it could be a lot worse and I think it would be under the Tories.

Am just starting to try and set up a sibling support group in my area actually and it will be interesting to see what response I get from different counciloors etc WRT to basic funding (onloy for room / any toys)- that will be illuminating

MilaMae · 23/03/2010 13:22

Good posts BitOfFun

morningpaper · 23/03/2010 13:23

peachy can you email me asap about that, I can help

electrofagz · 23/03/2010 13:26

Or his victory could coincide with an early induction and long spell of paternity leave, giving Nick G the opportunity to carry out a Beer Hall Putsch with MN being swiftly replaces by "children, church and cooking - net"

atlantis · 23/03/2010 13:26

" social services will have to make cuts somewhere, and all those little services for families that might just stop you wanting to jump in a canal- well, they'll be the first to go. "

For the last three years our LA have been cutting back on these things anyway, why because labour have taken massive cuts from the amount of money they give to local government and what they do give they ring fence for there little pet projects. And why did they withdraw this money? Because the majority of councils are now not under labour control so they can say look at those bad tories or lib dems cutting everything.

The conservatives have not been in power for thirteen years so no one can say they are 'this' or 'that' without evidence which will only be gained when they get into number 10 after may.

As for labour, well again they have proved that all they have managed to do in power is bankrupt the country again and flip flopped on policies throughout each department causing mayhem to all services whilst feathering their own nests.
