here

Not a good advertisement for the rehabilitation programme they went on. I did hear that it was in Ireland and he tried to strangle a girlfriend..........but obviously that is not based on any factual evidence, just internet gossip.

Anyhow, difficult difficult difficult

Why can't life imprisionment mean life ? The death penalty would just devalue human life, so that's not an option but it strikes me it is costing tax payers a fortune in rehabilitation, in finding new identities and half way houses so why not just throw the key away.
At the moment armed robbery where nobody is injured attracts a sentence of 25 years.
Anyone want Venables as a son in law, father to their grandchild ?

wannaBe · 03/03/2010 14:41

ultimately though living under new identities comes with a choice attached. so -

"you can be released from prison. Because of what you have done it would be in your best interest that you live under the identity of Fred Blogs. Here is your new birth certificate, passport, (well actually not sure if they would be given passports but ykwim), this is where you will live etc, (one assumes they were not just set free into society). Under your new identity you will be protected by the law, there is a worldwide injunction preventing you from being named or your whereabouts being revealed. Should you choose not to live under this identity you do so at your own risk, do bear in mind that that risk will include the mob coming round to seek vijilanti justice and your picture and address being published in the news of the world."

VinegarTits · 03/03/2010 14:41

100% agree with Rubarbs post

fifitot · 03/03/2010 14:42

Keeping them in prison when they no longer pose a risk may cost more. We don't know what JV has allegedly done yet.

Life does mean life. They are on licence for the rest of their life and any breach of this will lead to recall to prison where a decision is then may as to the current state of any risk they pose and whether they can be released. The fact he has been recalled shows the system is working.

WhoIsAsking · 03/03/2010 14:43

Milly, do you mean life meaning life - as in You will go to prison until you die?

Because if so, then keeping prisoners for possibly 60 years will cost the tax-payer far and away more than rehabilitation and halfway houses.

And also, if ilfe means life - then that rapist might as well just kill his victim eh? Because the price would be the same if he killed or maimed or raped or...fill your own gaps in.

Rhubarb · 03/03/2010 14:44

Very assumptive of you to think we are not well versed in psychiatry. I myself am an esteemed Psychiatrist and my colleage Peachy has an MD in Forensic Science. We both have different opinions but both have the utmost of respect for each other.

Indeed many of us working mums on this thread do work within psychology. StewieGriffinsMom and wannabe are both expert professionals in their field.

Our opinions therefore, are based on our superior intellect and extensive knowledge of the field.

KimiGaveUpStarbucks4Lent · 03/03/2010 14:44

Kimi have reported your post as it advocates child killing. nasty. LOL

Maybe I need rehabilitating, no hang on that does not work!!!!

Point is some people are evil and can not be be fixed.
Lock them up in a six by four from the day of the trial till the day they die, They should not have been allowed out ever after what they did.

And yes I do support the death penalty how ever un PC that is.

PreachyPeachyRantsALot · 03/03/2010 14:45

Milly if every person who murdered a child was given a life as life sentence I;d be OK with that

I don't want it to be a few people only, all or none is justice

and Is tillw ouldn't beleive it would be appropriate to a ten year old: 18, 20 maybe nut not ten.

Milly, do you have a ten year old?

Soemone asked earlier if we had toddlers- I do, but also a ten year old and he is a child, Clearly a child.

fifitot · 03/03/2010 14:46

Well good for you too. I couldn't tell that from your posts.

Rhubarb · 03/03/2010 14:46

Kimi however, is not well versed in the field of psychiatry, as she clearly demonstrates.

wannaBe · 03/03/2010 14:46

milly, so where do you draw the line then?

If a five year old kills someone do you think they should be locked up for the rest of their life too?

I have no issue with agreeing that for adults, life should mean life. But I cannot apply the same argument to primary school-aged children.

ClaireDeLoon · 03/03/2010 14:46

Milly you can't keep somone in prison from the age of ten for the rest of their life, you just can't (unless they are a risk to others obv). That could be what - 60/70 years maybe in prison.

The parole board have reviewed their case, assessed the level of awareness, remorse etc and judges how fit they are cope with life outside, then allowed them out of prison on a strict licence, being carefully monitored. I really do think that is the best outcome.

MillyMollyMoo · 03/03/2010 14:47

No the fact that he been recalled shows that he has reoffended, however minor again that's all.
We don't know when or what he's done and I doubt we ever will, he will be protected.
Personally I think it's a price worth paying on the basis of reoffending rates being relatively high.
Now a burglar reoffending I don't like but ultimately on a cost benefit basis I can see why they are released, but anyone who has taken another life is too high risk.

PreachyPeachyRantsALot · 03/03/2010 14:47

The LOL was yours not mine, want to emphasise that. It's a sick palce to put an LOL.

id on't much give a flying damn about PC or not; I don;t support the death sentence and never will, and I don't beleive in innate evil, only created evil.

Rhubarb · 03/03/2010 14:47

Oh really fifi? Funny that because I assumed from yours that you must be from those lower classes one sees from time to time.

Peachy, I agree but it depends on the 10yo. A 10yo who has been forced to grown up quickly because of a life of abuse and neglect will be much more aware than a 10yo who has been allowed a childhood.

fifitot · 03/03/2010 14:48

Actually that very sarcastic which wasn't my intention Rhubarb.

fifitot · 03/03/2010 14:49

I posted my response before I saw yours. Don't take it so personally.

KimiGaveUpStarbucks4Lent · 03/03/2010 14:49

Hindly got life and died in prison
Bradey got life (is he dead yet?)
Krays got life died in prison
Life needs to mean life, no 8 years and a new start.
Any one who says about human rights for these animals is barking, they gave up the right to be treated as human the day they behaved like animals and stole, tortured and killed that baby.

If Jamie Bulger had been your child would you want his killers to have a nice life?

Because if they had done what they did to one of my children there is no where on this earth they would have been safe new name of not

WhoIsAsking · 03/03/2010 14:50

I'm not a psychiatrist, or a forensic psychologist, or a criminal lawyer, or an expert in rehabilitation.

I missed the bit at the top of this forum which said "Only those with the correct qualifications need comment"

Christ Alive.

MillyMollyMoo · 03/03/2010 14:50

I draw the line at the age of criminal responsibility.
If the issue is that 10 is too young then that's a whole different debate as I said either. They couldn't have been hanged under 16.
But you can imprision people for the rest of their lives and if we removed all the comforts it would be significantly cheaper, again that's another debate.

I do have a 9 year old who is a child but she knows stealing, hitting and lying is wrong, as did Venables and Thompson.

I meant my sarcasm fifi and agree with WhoIsAsking.

fifitot · 03/03/2010 14:52

Thats why employ judges Kimi. Of course as the victims parents you would feel that. However we can't run a society on vengeance, so others make the decisions. Sometimes they get it wrong, often they get it right.

The people you name up there show that sometimes the system decides we can't release certain people. That surely is comforting to know? That yes, for some release is not an option.

wannaBe · 03/03/2010 14:54

"Kimi however, is not well versed in the field of psychiatry, as she clearly demonstrates." sorry but

Rhubarb · 03/03/2010 14:54

It's political fifi and you know it.

The only reason Hindley wasn't released was political.
